Top tips for hiring a car at Puerto Escondido airport

  • For easy, flexible travel plans booking yourself a car hire at Puerto Escondido Airport is a great first step. You can get straight into the city centre in a matter of minutes after you leave the terminal as the airport is located roughly 2.5 miles away. With your own vehicle, you can also visit other nearby cities such as Huatulco and Oaxaca all at your own pace, and you'll be able to stop wherever you want on the way. By booking your car for the airport you can have your own vehicle from the beginning of your trip right to the end, dropping it off just before you leave.
  • Double-check your provider's returns policy as different providers may have different requirements around when and where you return your vehicle. Some may offer one-way hire if you aren't leaving via the airport, this is more common at major providers like Hertz and Europcar. After-hours returns may be available, in these cases, you can return your vehicle and leave the keys and paperwork in a drop-box located outside the service desks. This option is very useful if you have a late-night or early morning flight.
  • Remember that you will also likely need to return your Puerto Escondido Airport car hire with a full tank of fuel. Luckily there are multiple petrol stations near and on the way to the terminal that you can use to refuel just before returning it. The exception to this is if you opt for a prepaid fuel option offered by some companies. This means you pay in advance for the full tank of fuel, usually at a slight discount, and don't need to return it full, this is useful if you think you'll go through at least one tank.
  • The best time to return your vehicle will likely be in the early morning or in the evening. Between 16:00 and 21:00, the terminal tends to be fairly quiet, as well as between 07:00 and 09:00. Tuesday is usually the quietest day. In general, however, simply avoiding the peak hours of 12:00 to 15:00 will likely be enough to avoid long queues.
  • Book your car hire at Puerto Escondido airport at least 3 weeks before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about hiring a car at Puerto Escondido airport

  • Where are the service desks located?

The different companies providing car hire at Puerto Escondido Airport are located at different places in and near the airport. Most, including Keddy and Firefly, are located inside the airport terminal while Sunnycars is located just outside near the main parking lot. Europcar can be found just a short walk along the main road that leads to the airport. Once the staff have checked your paperwork and confirmed your booking you will be able to collect your vehicle from a nearby parking lot. Take note of where your vehicle is located within the lot as this is likely the general area you will be asked to return it to.

  • What documentation is required?

Before you can collect your car hire at Puerto Escondido Airport the staff will first have to check some identity and payment documents. You will need to show them your driver's license, usually, this will need to have no demerit points or restrictions on it. Then you will need to present your passport along with a major credit card so you can provide payment information and put down a deposit. Finally, you will need confirmation of your booking. It is best if the legal name on all these documents matches.

  • Which providers are most convenient?

Hertz and Firefly's service desks are open 24h a day for total flexibility on pick-up and drop-off. Major providers will often have loyalty programs that may offer priority or express check-in services. In the event that traffic is heavy or you have an unavoidable disruption, Europcar has a grace period of 29min on their returns, giving you some extra leeway if a last-minute emergency strikes.
