Rio de Janeiro Hostels

Pros: The staff is really friendly and welcoming! The location of the hostal is so perfect, like one block to the beach. The room are correct and the wifi is working well. The pizza and the caipi are really good. I recommend this hostal for your journey in Rio de Janeiro

Pros: great location, really nice staff, the parties were hectic, and a really cool bartender with nice drink prices.

Cons: they have triple bunk beds in one room, which doesn't seems comfortable....

Pros: The rooms are simple, but they have all we need, and they are quite well isolated. The lockers are big enough to put all our belongings. The hostel is really well located, two minutes away from the beach. The staff is really helpful and dedicated, special thanks to Mathilde who gave me a lot of useful tips about the city and safety. I couldn't thank her enough :)

Cons: No kitchen, no place to put clothes to dry, the lounge area is quite small, no happy hour (which make difficult to meet new people and create a sense of belonging to the place

Pros: Compared to the Misti in Copacabana, this is a palace. It is newer. The room was for 8 people and had private bathroom. It was clean. The air conditioner is turned on during the night only, so during the day the room is really hot. There is no fan to turn on and the windows do not open widely. The staff was ok. Not as friendly and lively as in the other Misti. The hostels have the same nightly activities. The tours are more expensive in this Misti. The location is fantastic, only one block away from the beach and another block away from a metro station. The only thing is that there are no supermarkets close by, so you have to buy expensive water bottles (4 reales compared to 1.69 in the supermarket). I would stay again in this one.

Pros: The location is great, safe área. Friendly staff. The room was fine. Breakfast not incuided, but good price and tasty.

Pros: Very clean everywhere, cleaners there all day. Really helpful and friendly staff with fantastic english, Roderigo sorted out an earlier than scheduled transfer to Ilha Grande for us when our morning plans fell through and also introduced us to other Irish staying in the hostel , really cool guy. Washington always friendly and helpful every day, made us feel really welcome at check in. Key card locks on all rooms. Large under bed storage lockers that can easily fit large rucksack. Happy hour 7-7.30 in bar. Good wifi. Go hiking with Alice! Amazing location to Ipanema beach. Originally had 4 nights booked and stayed for an extra 2.

Cons: Breakfast isn't included and is way over priced to have there. 20BRL for a banana, 2 slices of sweet bread and a small type omlete - juice, coffee and water there also. We were in an 8 bed mixed dorm and water on the floor of the bathroom the whole 6 night stay, leaking from toilet but cleaners just kept wrapping a soaked towel around it every day which didn't help. You can imagine with 8 people sharing the bathroom how the floor was between cleaners visits. Soap and hand towel ran out on second day and not replaced. Pay 10BRL to rent a towel. Aircon 9-9 but no control over it, some nights too cold with only light sheet on bed. Some days cleaners only made bottom bunks, some days none atal, not really sure why? Asked multiple guys at reception about doing a hike with a group from the hostel as had read on reviews and everytime was told they'd check if one was going and when asked again wasnt really given an answer but they said they'd tell us how to get there ourselves, in the end we got the contact info off a guy in our room that had done one with the volunteer already and we went with her. Her name is Alice and works as a volunteer through the hostel in Ipanema and Copacabana, we did the two brothers mountain hike with a group with her and shes fantastic. Definitely ask for her details there.

Pros: The location is my favourite in Rio. Also, having the bathroom inside the room was really nice!

Cons: They didn´t have blankets to provide us the first night. The employee that was working the night shift was super helpfull and gave us some extra sheets, but stil, we were a bit cold for the night. They provided us blankets the very next day though. Asside from that, it was a very pleasent stay.

Pros: It is close to Ipanema beach and the metro to bring you to the centre.

Cons: There isn’t a great atmosphere because there’s no communal area to meet people staying there.

Pros: It’s a nice hostel, big, modern and generally clean, although they forgot to clean the room a couple of times....even when asked they still didn’t clean it until next day, bin in bathroom was overflowing. I think they have stuff going on in the evenings - pizza night/burger night etc were written on the board but in my 10 days there no one ever said anything to me about what they entailed. (Pizza and burgers I’d imagine - saw people eating pizza once but no idea what the deal was) There was no kitchen facilities - the el mistis in Copacabana have a kitchen. There is a bar, bar man is super friendly as are the rest of the staff. They do excursions but they’re not really advertised, I went to Pedra de Gávea for the day on a hike which was amazing but I only knew because another guy in the room told me about it, they need to put these things on a board on the front desk or something - we were the only 2 from our hostel, no one else I spoke to knew about it. Fantastic location one block from Ipanema beach. Beds comfortable, big safe metal drawers for storage under bed.

Cons: I can’t believe for such a big hostel there is no filtered water supply to use, I asked a couple of times and they filled my bottle in the kitchen, the rest of the time I drank out the bathroom tap (not ideal) or bought bottles downstairs ($5r......$2r in the supermarket down the road) Drinks are expensive for a hostel whether water or alcohol, for some reason they only had little cans of Amstel (same price as a big can from one of the drinks stands in the street) or big bottles of Heineken/bud - no big cans/bottles of Brazilian beer. Very loud if you get a street facing room and have the windows open, hours that the aircon works are restricted - tight. They put the price up by about $25r a night because of Copa America. It was cheaper to extend stay through booking with genius discount than at the reception. I did seem a bit like it was all about he Benjamin’s.

Pros: The only positive things are the location and that the staff are friendly. Nice outside area/bar (although without a social atmosphere)

Cons: 4 bed dorm is too small. It's not a really clean place. Matresses are dirty and provided sheets look a bit shabby. Beds are rosty. There is not always hot water. They charged me for a drink I never took. There are better hostels in Rio, also taking into account the price was relatively high (probably due to the copa america).

Cons: Installations are quite old and often break down, in my case toilet,shower and entrance gate broke down during my stay. Really need maintenance.

Cons: Room 106 door was a very thin wooden door with louvres. Could hear everything outside. Very noisy during breakfast time. They don't give any bottled water...bathroom very small. TV is also very small for the room size!

Pros: Nice place, in a secure and safe compound on a quiet street, right in Copacabana district. Staff friendly and helpful. Good breakfast.

Pros: I had a wonderful time at Bamboo Rio Hostel! The staff is super friendly, welcoming and sweet, they made me feel at home immediately. Bathrooms are cleaned every morning. Breakfast is very good. The bar is a nice place to meet people. Location is very good: close to subway station. As for comfort: you pay for what you get, which (in my case) is a dorm with shared bathroom. I enjoyed my stay and will come back. :-)

Cons: crowded and small shared rooms with too few suckets and either really old lockers that were noisy to open or good newer lockers outside the rooms, so a bit further away. There was sometimes no warm water in the showers.

Pros: The location is nice, a really short walk to the beach and restaurants, the street feels safe even at night. They let us store our luggage before check in and after check out, which was kind. They also helped us arrange airport transfer. Strong wifi.

Cons: Not clean at all. The sewers in the bathroom haven't been cleaned, which resulted in our entire room smelling like sewage all the time. It was really disgusting and difficult to spend any time in the room. The room did not match the pictures and the hostel is loud. The fan in the room did not work and the shower is tiny.

Pros: Staff were friendly. When we checked out they did let us keep our bags there all afternoon.

Cons: Room was small and not very inviting. The bathroom.. constantly smelt of sewage, the shower had no temp control, just turn it on and that’s what you get. Holes from cigarettes on the one blanket that you are given. Filthy mattress.

Pros: Staff is amazing! I was there for the Carnival and the atmosphere was incredible! All the staff was very supportive and helpful.

Pros: Location is perfect, few mins walk to the beach and main area of copacabana and Ipanema beach. Otherwise Uber can just pick you up for cheap. There's a bakery in the nearby gas station that sells yummy bread! Also, lots (4 i think) of USB chargers in the room! Staff are nice and check in is 24hrs. Drinking water is free so just bring a jug. There's a spacious open area with tablea for any use. Water pressure for shower is ok and heated. There's an ATM in the gas station nearby for all cards. Credit cards accepted.

Cons: Would be nice if there was access to hot water for coffee in the morning and or utensils, typical of hostels. Also, improvenent on the bathroom possible by adding hooks for clothes and space for soap in the shower area. Wishful thinking for a toilet bidet too. There's extra payment for blankets.

Pros: It is a decent hostel, just really overpriced during carnival period.

Cons: Lot of ants :-( It could be a bit cleaner in the kitchen. Thin doors so you can hear noices from the corridor and feel every smell. All others aspects really good! For this price it was very nice.

Cons: The biggest problem was the lack of air conditioner. They put a big fan which makes really a lot of strange noise during working. It's up to you if you could sleep with noise all night or not. Cause it was heard from outside of room as well... Breakfast was poor.

Pros: Private garage to park my car. Centrally located. Very nice breakfast. Tea, coffee, watermelon, butter, ham, cheese, sponge cake, orange juice. Staff at reception very helpful. Great value for money 50 reals for 2 person.

Cons: Dirty walls, bugs and roaches in room, old, broken furniture, old blankets and pillows, barely functioning fan, WiFi works less than 20% of the time. Hotel needs lots of care to be a basic hostel/hotel: currently more of a last resource with a high price (even during Canraval).
