9.7 Excellent (121 reviews)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Dinner and Breakfast were gigantic and palatable. Very comfy futon and a warm welcome feeling from the family. The house is located just across the street from bus stop so it was very easy to find.
Cons: Nothing bad.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was beautiful, the meals were astoundingly good with well-matched wine and the owners were delightful. Nothing was too much trouble and we felt very lucky to be able to stay there
Cons: It is good to be aware that, due to heritage restrictions, the toilets and washbasins were down some steep stairs. If you can manage those, it is very much worth it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very kindly! Food is delicious!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Warm and courteous family staffs made the stay like home coming. The meals is specially prepared and excellent. It makes a perfect stay for family holidays
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly stuff... The place is run by the family... All good and satisfied. Food was excellent
Cons: The hommy feel.. Cosy.. Friendly experience
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We really enjoyed staying in shiroyamakan. They provide us the true japanese traditional experience. The dinner is very tasty! Complete from sushi to hida beef, they even decorate the food. Our breakfast also very nice. The location is great just across bus station. We used futon to sleep, it was comfortable. They have heater in the room and also electric heater for the blanket. The staff which all mr takuya’s family are very very nice, they served the customer with their heart. We love the ambience. Totally worth it.
Cons: None
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Family run Ryokan with outstanding service and comfortable futon beds. We loved the room and traditional feel. We were given free access to Onsen just across the road. No shower with room but shared toilet room was very clean. The food was delicious and dining setting was beautiful.
Cons: Stink bugs which seem harmless but nevertheless bugs that appear randomly.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We initially thought it a little pricey while we compared accommodation. Little did we expect the memorable experience we would encounter. Shiroyamakan is a ryokan through and through. Expect warm hospitality, fluffy futons, remarkable food. The ryokan itself is authentic and beautiful from the room through to the entrance. Our room is all the way in at the back, and literally perched beside the river. It is bright, clean and very spacious. There is a comfortable common area with a bean-to-cup coffee machine. Meals are served in ornate private dining rooms. The ryokan is passed down from generations to this generation and is run by a cohesive family, each family member seems clear with their own roles. Added to their movie star looks it feels like we were living in a period drama. What made it memorable was not just warm service and beautiful room. The room is beside the Sho river that runs through shirakawa-go. Sleeping to the sound of rapids is unforgetable. Included in the price is kaiseki that we would go back just to have it again. The kaiseki is varied and they used what we could only say are the finest seasonal ingredients. Featured in our dinner are a special cut of hida beef, fish caught in a nearby river, gold flakes and many more fresh fruits and vegetables. Shiroyamakan have their own home made miso. It is sweet and flavourful (which unfortunately our luggage does not permit us to buy some back). Our breakfast was served in the room overlooking their private garden and also the river. The meals are unforgetable. The ryokan does not have a bath. Some might find it inconvenient but to us, the short walk in yukata and the utterly relaxing dip in the natural onsen (hotspring) (entrance included) were also unforgetable.
Cons: This is a continuation of the pros! Then there was a private tour (included) right through main road shirakawa-go and also to a secret scenic spot. You see the road is closed off to public, it can only by the villagers of shirakawa-go. It felt like VVIP treatment. But to us, the most memorable part of our stay are our conversations with members of the family. They are humble, authentic and also particularly endearing because we have a shared connection to the elder sister's family as our boys are of similar age as theirs. We chatted as they wiped the wheels of our luggages as we arrived till the time we take a parting photograph. It all comes together as an unforgettable time for us. It was a privilege to have experienced it. Remember the first sentence in this review? How wrong we were! We can't recommend shiroyamakan enough. p/s Be sure to make use of the free bike rental. We used it to speed through and take photos in the morning before tourists arrived. Also, it is located right in front of the village's bus terminal. With the village being closed off to transport, this was a plus.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Highly recommend a stay here!! The level of attention and service was truly exceptional. For example, when we wanted to hike up to the observatory point, they offered a free ride up the road on a impromptu basis. Dinner and breakfast were exceptional, and they were the best meals we’ve had in Japan. Great to have had a tour around the village, so that we can better plan our itinerary. The beds were extremely comfortable and it was great to live in a traditional ryokan. We truly enjoyed your stay, and would come back if we are coming to this area.
Cons: NIL.
