The island does not have extensive public transportation, so renting your own vehicle is the best way to explore Terceira. Having a car will allow you to go to more rural parts of the region, and you can do so on your own time, without having to wait for a bus. Plus, it will make it easy to transport all of your luggage and any recreational equipment that you have, like a bike.

Driving in Terceira is relatively straightforward, as it is a fairly rural island and does not have too many cars. You will almost never find yourself caught in traffic, for example.
