By law, you can use a valid driver’s license from any country to rent a car in Seattle, though if it is in a foreign language, you may need a translation or International Driver’s Permit as well. Individual rental companies may have more restrictive policies, though, so it’s best to check ahead of time.
The law also requires renters to be at least 21 years of age, though some agencies require renters to be 25 or charge an extra fee for those under 25.
Most rental car companies will not accept cash payment, and require either a credit or debit card, on which they may put a security hold – if you are tight on funds, make sure you know how much they might freeze. You do not need to have personal auto insurance to rent a car, but if you don’t have it, make sure to purchase adequate insurance from the rental agency to protect you in case of an accident.

With Seattle’s bad traffic and difficult parking, a small car is best for in-city driving. However, if you plan to head into the mountains, you will want something bigger and heavier to get to hiking trailheads, campsites, or ski areas. In winter, you will need to either carry chains (and know how to install them) or have a four-wheel-drive vehicle to drive over any of the mountain passes east of the city. Most rental car agencies carry many smaller cars and only a few larger ones, so make sure to reserve and confirm if you need anything bigger than standard size.

Most major rental car agencies have an office just outside Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). To get to them, you follow signs to rental car shuttles, which pick up frequently between the main airport building and the parking garage. If you’ll need a car throughout your trip or are staying somewhere with affordable parking, renting at the airport would be the easiest way.
If you are staying at a Downtown or Capitol Hill hotel, where parking can be as expensive (or more) as the daily car rental fee, you may want to wait and rent from a rental agency Downtown just for the time you really need a car.

If you plan to head into the mountains or across the border to Canada, make sure to double-check with your rental car company. Most permit cars to cross the border, but some may require extra paperwork. Few rental cars allow for off-road driving, so if you plan to get out into the wilds of Mt. Rainier National Park or onto the beaches of the Olympic Peninsula, make sure you know where you can or can’t go.

Seattle drivers mostly take heat from outsiders for their passive (and sometimes passive-aggressive) driving: They rarely use their horns, will almost always let someone in, and sometimes forget to take their turn at a four-way stop.
That makes it pretty easy for a newcomer to make their way around the city, especially since they will likely need to rely on that kindness when the one-way streets and random left-hand exits from the freeway trip them up. A friendly wave always helps, though.
Washington has very strict safety laws, including that every passenger wear a seatbelt, and that driving a car with a minor not belted has particularly severe consequences for the driver. Children under 4’9” are required to use a booster-style car seat and children under age two must be in a rear-facing car seat.
The speed limit on city streets, unless otherwise posted, is 25 mph. Watch out for school zones, which bring it down to 20 mph and are often monitored by a camera that automatically sends hefty tickets – and yes, the rental car company will pass that cost on to you. All local toll booths are also operated by camera, so expect to receive a bill for those from the rental car company.

In outer neighborhoods, parking tends to be easy to find and mostly free. However, in Downtown, Capitol Hill, Fremont, Ballard, the Chinatown-International District, and other popular destination neighborhoods, parking is very limited. If you can find street parking, it may be limited to an hour or two and cost $1 to $5 per hour. You can either pay at the kiosks on each street or by using the PayByPhone app and entering the location number. Private lots in most busy areas charge slightly more than street parking but are generally easier to park in and don’t have time limits. Hotels generally charge $20-50 for parking, depending on location, season, and if they are valet or self-park.

It rarely snows in the city, but if it does, do not try to drive. The freeze-thaw cycle of snow in a marine climate combined with the steep roads turns Seattle into a downhill ice-skating rink – only cars don’t have razor-sharp blades. The city pretty much shuts down with significant snowfall, so you won’t have anywhere to go anyway. Even if you consider yourself an expert snow driver from your winter on Canada’s Ice Road, you do not want to be on Seattle streets in the snow because nobody else out there will be.

It’s off airport but they have a shuttle bus. Easy as could be
AaronJan 2025
Note that the car rental facility is not at the airport and requires a short shuttle ride from near baggage claim 1.
LauraDec 2024
Fuel up 20 minutes before drop off. The gas around the airport is the most expensive.
Verified travelerNov 2024
Download the paybyphone app for parking. And try to avoid the i5 as it's seems to always be very busy. Google maps/waze for well in the area but the exits around downtown can be very confusing.
Verified travelerAug 2024
Dollar offered us a good deal on gas when returning the car. It was about 75 cents per gallon cheaper than average Seattle gas and we didn’t have to stress over trying to find a gas station close to the airport.
Verified travelerJul 2024
Tip: remember they will prioritize someone extending their rental over you getting your car. Try to avoidajot holiday periods, or get your mitts on a car early and extend it (although that screws the other guy)
Verified travelerAug 2024
Allow plenty of time after returning, there is a long line for the shuttle bus to the terminal

Verified travelerMar 2024
Pay really close attention to what time Hertz closes because they will allow you to choose a pick up time that is the SAME time that they shut their service windows and say “we’re closed” even though the app allowed you to go through with the reservation process and didn’t warn you that maybe setting an earlier pick up time would be a better idea.

During the Thanksgiving holiday, we went downtown. There are a lot of 1 way streets, with minimal immediate parking, but ample parking decks scattered around. Don’t attempt to walk from Pike Place market to the original Starbucks! (many homeless vagrants along the way especially there at Pike Place) Drive or take an Uber! Space Needle parking valet is limited, I couldn’t find normal parking. General traffic on I-5 going north added at least 30 minutes.
AlanSept 2023

SteveNov 2023
Driving after 3 pm is foolish due to heavy traffic.

Agencies all do things differently so ask about everything BEFORE you hit the reserve button online. Your auto insurance company likely covers the rental car and if it doesn’t your credit card might. Check before you purchase extra insurance from the agency. So many extra fees! Try to rent outside the airport if you can.
krrishJul 2023
Please take your full insurance its better to be get paid some bucks before rather than regret after and believe me its really worth it because if you are going in the group and if the car is under your name they step back for money if anything happens even your are not driving

Seattle traffic is bad but not as bad as we had heard. The ferry system to the San Juan Island requires reservations and the online sign up system is balky. We called and got helpful staff.

The new automatic road toll scheme with Avis where you just pay a service charge on the days you use the tolls is a big step forward. I applaud them for that.

HOV lanes: Single line can be crossed, but not double lines. Some areas have tolls that you’d still have to pay if you’re HOV-eligible since the rental isn’t set up with their specific tags. Check your route, because you may be able to go to the flexible HOV/express lanes which split from the main highway. They don’t show as default route options in Google Maps or Apple Maps.

KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Seattle
Ready to rent a car on your trip to Seattle? Save time and avoid public transport by renting a car that will give you the complete freedom to explore this exciting West Coast city. As it’s flanked by water and is home to mountains, the Cascade and Olympic, as well as lush forests and parkland, Seattle’s unique location and great roads offer its visitors outstanding scenic views as soon as you jump in your car.
A good place to pick up your hire car is at the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. If you’re flying into Seattle, the city center is only a 13-mile drive away. Once you land, finding the car hire office is a breeze. You can use the 24-hour shuttle buses or head to the passenger pick-up areas in the main terminal located outside baggage claim at the north or south ends.
As a new driver in the city, you need to be aware of Seattle’s often busy and one-way streets. If you’re driving on residential streets, keep your eyes on the road as they often two lanes often merge into one. It’s also good to keep in mind that pedestrians will expect you to stop for them at crosswalks. Fortunately, local drivers tend to be considerate; but, as this is a busy city, you may have to navigate a few tricky situations including narrow streets, hills, and rainy weather.
If you’re not in a rush to discover Seattle, you won’t be affected by the slow traffic that can build on some of the busier streets, particularly in the metropolitan areas. The best time to avoid driving around Seattle is later in the week, especially on Fridays. Rush hour can also hit on busier weekend afternoons. Thankfully, Seattle has a few traffic cameras dotted around its roads, helping you keep an eye on the freeway and other congested intersections.
After finalising your Seattle car hire for a family holiday, make sure that you’re aware of the child seat laws in Washington state. If you’re travelling with children under the age of 8, they must be seated in a child seat or booster seat in the back of the vehicle. Children over the age of 8, may use the normal seat belt but must be sat in the back. Only when a child has turned 13 years old can they be permitted by law to sit in the front passenger seat of any vehicle.
With cheap car hire in Seattle, it’s important that once you’ve made all your arrangements you are aware of the various driving laws, one in particular is the drink-driving law. Note that it is illegal to drive under the influence of alcohol in Seattle, Washington, with the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit being 0.08%. If a driver exceeds this limit, they may face criminal charges, a fine and a suspension of their licence. In addition, note that Washington State has an “implied consent” law, which means drivers have given their implied consent to take a breath or blood test if suspected of drink driving.
When you arrange cheap car hire in Seattle, be aware of the vehicle restrictions in place in the city centre. There are a number of policies in place to reduce traffic congestion, such as the Seattle City Bike Network, which include dedicated bike lanes throughout the downtown area, so when driving be wary of bike traffic and cyclist safety. Furthermore, there is a “congestion pricing” program, which charges drivers a fee for driving in particularly congested areas during peak hours. Also be aware of roads closed off to pedestrians and reserved for the use of buses only.

Gas prices in Seattle were $5.40/gal and I was driving a full size pickup. That was a bit of a shock. But really - I can say nothing bad about the actual RENTAL Experience. They were great. Car was great.
The website allowed me to book the car rental for 5 pm. Well the rental place closed at 5pm! I got there after 5 pm and was not able to get the car. I called Avis and they said I needed to get there by 4:59pm to get the car rental. I had to go all the way to the airport which made the rental more expensive than it already was. The lady at the counter was very rude. The no debit card rule for renting a car from an airport location is ridiculous, Not all of america lives off of credit cards!

The staff in Seattle (pick up location) didn’t honor the reservation. We book a bmw suv, but he was going to give me a 4 doors sedan, a much smaller car. His excuse was that they didn’t have the suv I booked. He said I either get a smaller car or he would cancel my reservation. I asked him if I could talk to his manager but he was rude and waked away. He walked back 5 minutes later and said he checked but there was still no suv. He sternly said if I didn’t like the smaller car, he would cancel my reservation and stated I had no other options. I once again said if he didn’t give me the suv I booked I would report him to kayak since he wouldn’t let me talk to his manager. He then realized I wouldn’t give in so he finally gave me the suv I booked. His excuse was that the car wasn’t available earlier. However, he also gave me the option earlier if I wanted the suv, I would have to pay more. The car was obviously there the entire time but he didn’t want to honor my reservation. It was the worse experience I ever had with a rental car company. I couldn’t pick up the car until 45 minutes later than my reservation

Our agent experience was very good. Quick and smooth. Our agent was a very nice young lady. Attentive
To be honest I had a lack of an experience because they did not have a car for me. They called and left a message the day before telling me to call before I went to the office because they did not have any cars and did not know if they would have any cars the following morning either. I called and was informed that they still did not have any cars, and did not know when they would get any, despite knowing that cars were available at the airport. So my option was to wait until they had cars with no timeline attached, or go directly to the airport. The reason I chose that office is because it was close to where I was going to be and if I went to the airport, I might as well have stayed there all day as I had a flight that night. The whole reason for getting a car was to have transportation and enjoy Seattle for a day before my flight home. Horrible customer service!

The car was fine with good gas mileage. However, the gas tank was half full when I entered the car and them filling it added unnecessary time and hassle to my pick up experience. Totally avoidable and lame.

I really liked their new service where the car can be made ready for you so you can skip the line and just go directly to the vehicle.
Waited nearly two hours to pick up the vehicle. The facility was understaffed, only two people were managing the front desk and one of them was clearly more competent than the other. Our vehicle was fine but hadn’t been cleaned super well, likely as a result of rushing. Will not use this Hertz location again.

Premium
Counter staff told me that Midsize was reserved even though I reserved the premium car. I had to upgrade to accommodate all my luggage with paying extra. What happened to QEEQ reservation?

Terrible staff at the counter and manager at SeaTac airport. Car wasn’t ready and they made us pay extra for the only other vehicle they had with the same amount of room/space.

Super easy pick up and drop off. Minimal interaction with employees but the ones I did talk to were super friendly. Great value, unlimited miles/km
Couldn’t Rent rhe car and my card got charged twice .. very very poor experience Kayak and appears there are so many intermediaries that no one actually cares about the customer .. utter rubbish! I have to follow up and chase my money and eventually booked directly with Avis .. not going to use your platform ever again. It’s all a joke! And I am sure no one who actually cares will do anything about it so not sure why you do these surveys and waste time !!!
I have forgotten my notebook in the rental car. Within1 hour of return I went back to rental location and car was rented back. The lady at the counter noted down car, descritipn and my phone number. It has been more than 10 days no one called back. I tried to call back but no response. There is no lost/found mechanism. Even though there is no monetary value to anyone of my notebook; it was important to me. Rental car company needs to have better mechanism

Pros:
Staff were friendly, efficient, and helpful.
Cons:
After we got on the road I realized that the tires were extremely worn. We were hydroplaning on the rainy freeway and it was quite scary. The car smelled like cigarettes and there was trash from the previous user in the center console.

The location was hard to find as the signs both at the garage and the lobby unit
Some Seattle car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend being aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Seattle.
Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your Seattle car hire.
