Portimao is a town in Portugal along the southern coast of the Algarve region. It is one of the largest cities in the Algarve and a gateway to the sun-kissed beaches in the Algarve.
The closest airport to Portimao is Faro Airport in the Algarve. Faro is about 63 km from Portimao, a short regional train trip away. Visitors can also reach Portimao from the sea. Portimao includes a cruise terminal where cruise ships dock at the Arade River. As the Algarve boasts a great Mediterranean climate visitors can expect a plenty of sunshine even when visiting outside the summer. Faro is situated in the Western European time zone.
Tourists flock to Portimao's beaches during the summer. The Praia da Rocha is one of Portimao's finest beaches which is just around the corner from the marina. The Praia da Rocha boasts golden sands and is a large and spacious beach. At the eastern end of the Praia da Rocha beach there is the historic Fortaleza da Santa Caterina. Praia dos Três Castelos is a beach in Portimao that has rocky outcrops and curving cliffs. Visitors can also visit the Praia do Amado beach during their Portimao holidays.
Visitors can take a boat trip from Portimao along the Arade River for a brief visit to Silves. Other boat trips take visitors up the coast and visit caves along the way. About 21 kms to the north of Portimao is the Serra de Monchique, Algarve's rolling mountain range set alongside forest-covered hillsides. There are also a number of golf courses around Portimao such as Le Meridien Penina Golf Club and Resort and CS Morgado Golf.
