Vilamoura is a resort in the Algarve in south Portugal. The resort is close to cities such as Albufeira Faro and Quarteira. Overall, it is one of the largest resorts in Portugal.
The primary airport in the Algarve is in Faro which is about sixteen kilometres from Vilamoura. Although there are no direct rail links to Vilamoura from the airport there is a taxi service available. As the Algarve boasts a fantastic Mediterranean climate there is plenty of sunshine even in the months before and after the summer period. The months of June and September, when the beaches are less crowded, are the best time to visit to Vilamoura. Vilamoura is in the western European time zone (WET).
The primary beach in Vilamoura is Praia da Marina on the east side of the marina which is great for watersports such as jet skiing, paragliding and banana boat rides. Another beach for Vilamoura holidays is the Praia da Rocha Baixinha which also has plenty of thrilling watersports. There are a number of beach bars along the Praia beach boardwalk. The Praia de Quarteira and Quinta do Lago Beach are two other scenic beaches around Vilamoura.
The Vilamoura marina has a huge range of restaurants and bars for visitors. Boat trips to caves along the coast also run from the marina. The resort is a great golf destination that boasts several championship golf courses such as the Pinhal Golf Course, Laguna Golf Course and Vila Sol which have terrific landscapes. The Family Golf Park in Vilamoura has mini-golf courses. There are not a huge number of historic sites in Vilamoura but the Cerro da Vila is one notable museum for visitors to visit on their Vilamoura holidays.
