Often called 'the biggest small town in Mexico', the country's second largest city moves at a relatively relaxed pace. At the heart of the city, the Centro Historico exhibits a fine collection of churches, museums and plazas, crowned by the iconic Guadalajara Cathedral. To the west, modern Guadalajara is home to luxury hotels and plenty of fine-dining options. The city spreads south-east to encompass the former villages of Tlaquepaque and Tonalá, both renowned centres for local artisans.
With a mild climate, Guadalajara holidays can be enjoyed at any time of year. Although summer temperatures can reach 35°C, the humidity remains reasonable. During winters, daytime temperatures are pleasant but have a sweater ready for the evenings. Guadalajara is served by long-distance buses at the Central Camionera coach station, six miles south-east of the city centre. The airport lies eleven miles outside the city. It handles domestic flights and routes to the U.S./Canada. Get around the city by bus, metro or taxi. Mexico is six hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT -6).
The Centro Historico is a delightful area to explore on foot, with many pedestrianised streets. Guadalajara Cathedral and its yellow tipped, neo-gothic towers is a must-see. East of the cathedral is Mercado Libertad, one of Mexico’s largest markets. Open every day of the year and with over 2000 stalls, the market is popular with locals and holidaymakers alike.
Families will enjoy Guadalajara Zoo in the northern reaches of the city. Considered one of the best in Latin America, it has great city views and over 2000 animals. Take a day trip to the shores of Lake Chapala, Mexico’s largest freshwater lake, and see why many Americans and Canadians are choosing to make this charming area their new home. Many holidaymakers can’t resist a visit to the nearby town of Tequila, and take a tour around the distilleries producing this famously potent beverage.
