Fancy an island holiday? This late in the year you’d be forgiven for assuming that all the good holiday spots have been booked and that there is nothing available anymore. Well, you’d be sorely wrong. As we near the end of the high season and move into the off-but-still-super-warm-season there are plenty of amazing bargains to be found. Cheap deals that include both flights to an incredible island destination and very agreeable accommodation to stay in while you are there. Below you’ll find just a few examples of what’s available out there. Snaffle them up for yourselves or use them as a guideline to find the times that suit you best. It’s your choice….

We have selected 7 special islands in the Mediterranean and one of off the coast of the UK. 8 islands in 6 countries: sometimes bigger, sometimes smaller; sometimes with sandy beaches, sometimes pebbly; sometimes directly accessible, sometimes only by ferry; but all of them imbued with the qualities that make island life so special.

Whether it’s the calm and laid-back way Islanders approach life, whether it’s the chance to disconnect from the daily grind, whether it’s the salt air or the terrain island or whether it’s some unknown feeling that permeates the island itself, they all offer you the incomparable feeling of an island holiday. And the fact that they all (well 7 out of 8) promise you a really hot end of summer in the Mediterranean doesn’t hurt either.

Flight+Hotel on Sardinia

With over 1,200 miles of coastline, lush sand beaches and a mountainous interior ripe for hiking, Sardinia is the kind of place you can apply the ‘best of both worlds’ tag to without it sounding old hat. The beaches are quiet and relaxing yet a vibrant city centre is never far away. The finest boutiques can be found on the Costa Smeralda or you can explore the Nuraghi, mysterious Bronze-age edifices dotted across Sardinia’s landscape. Sardinia’s history also contributes to its amazing food – where, due to centuries of coastal raids, much of the population lived inland and the mouthwatering dishes of today here owe as much to as to the succulent seafood found off the coast.

For this one, we step away from the Mediterranean and look out into the Irish Sea. The Isle of Man sparks the spirit of adventure with its rugged coastlines, medieval castles and dense landscape that was once home to Vikings and Celts. Explore the island on foot or by cycle, visit castles and ancient ruins, walk the glens or take a boat out onto the water, play golf or indulge in water sports, or simply enjoy the local delicacies and a pint in a country inn. Flight+Hotel holiday on Ischia

Situated in the Bay of Naples, this island’s volcanic nature is best experienced in the caves and grottoes just behind Maronti Beach, where you can bathe in the mineral-rich hot springs. From here you can take a dip in the turquoise water, sunbathe on the gorgeous beach or, now that your muscles are warmed up, get exploring. Visit the Giardini La Mortella, some of the lushest gardens you’ll ever see thanks to the volcanic soil, cross the bridge to Aragonese Castle, built in 474BC or climb to the top of Monte Epomeo for incredible views of the bay. Crete, Greece – the birthplace of gods

Flight+Hotel holidays on Crete

Greece’s largest island hardly needs an introduction as everyone already knows what a splendid destination it is; and if white-sand beaches, blue waters and sunshine galore scream holiday to you, then the beaches of Crete are all that you need. But Crete has so much more to offer. If you have even a fleeting interest in history or mythology, leave the white sand beaches and head for the White Mountains. The tallest of which is home to the Ideon Cave, which, according to Greek mythology, is the birthplace of Zeus. For something a bit more concrete, visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum to see its exhibits which cover over 5,500 years of the history of the island. And of course, don’t forget to stop for frequent refreshments on your travels.

Explore Malta and Gozo – underwater and above

Flight+Hotel holidays on Malta

Malta is an archipelago situated between Sicily and the North African coast but it’s mainly the islands of Malta and Gozo where you’ll want to hang out (the third inhabited island is Camino, amazing for water sports but is only 2 miles across and has one solitary hotel on it). Having been inhabited by the Romans, Moors, Knights of St. John, the French and the British at various times throughout history, the architecture, churches and sights constructed by previous inhabitants of the island are a visual feast that can keep you sightseeing for days on end. On the other side of the spectrum, Malta’s water is a dream, both on top and under. Whether laying n the beach by the sea, experiencing the adrenaline of all sorts of water sports or snorkelling or diving around the island, Malta both thrills and relaxes to the highest degree.
