Framed by its 13th-century walls, Hvar is both the name of this Dalmatian Island and its port town. Known for its natural beauty, its hillsides are covered with, pine fields, olive groves and lavender fields that perfectly contrast its azure waters. Add to this its warm hospitality and incredible restaurants on the water’s edge and you have the perfect package. Note: To reach Hvar you must first fly to Split (spend the day here if possible and get lost in the Diocletian Palace) and then travel to the island by ferry.

Sardinia, Italy – the best of both worlds

For this one, we step away from the Mediterranean and look out into the Irish Sea. The Isle of Man sparks the spirit of adventure with its rugged coastlines, medieval castles and dense landscape that was once home to Vikings and Celts. Explore the island on foot or by cycle, visit castles and ancient ruins, walk the glens or take a boat out onto the water, play golf or indulge in water sports, or simply enjoy the local delicacies and a pint in a country inn. Do make sure to pack a jumper though.

Ischia, Italy – A lavaley island
Situated in the Bay of Naples, this island’s volcanic nature is best experienced in the caves and grottoes just behind Maronti Beach, where you can bathe in the mineral-rich hot springs. From here you can take a dip in the turquoise water, sunbathe on the gorgeous beach or, now that your muscles are warmed up, get exploring. Visit the Giardini La Mortella, some of the lushest gardens you’ll ever see thanks to the volcanic soil, cross the bridge to Aragonese Castle, built in 474BC or climb to the top of Monte Epomeo for incredible views of the bay. Crete, Greece – the birthplace of gods
Greece’s largest island hardly needs an introduction as everyone already knows what a splendid destination it is; and if white-sand beaches, blue waters and sunshine galore scream holiday to you, then the beaches of Crete are all that you need. Explore Malta and Gozo – underwater and above
Malta is an archipelago situated between Sicily and the North African coast but it’s mainly the islands of Malta and Gozo where you’ll want to hang out (the third inhabited island is Camino, amazing for water sports but is only 2 miles across and has one solitary hotel on it). Having been inhabited by the Romans, Moors, Knights of St. John, the French and the British at various times throughout history, the architecture, churches and sights constructed by previous inhabitants of the island are a visual feast that can keep you sightseeing for days on end.
