Car hire excess insurance in Ayr

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) & Theft Protection Waiver

Collision damage waiver and theft protection are insurance options that cover renters from paying high penalty fees if the car is stolen or returned damaged. Some Ayr car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the rental price but not all of them. We recommend always be aware of your coverage when renting a car in in Ayr.

Deductible

Keep in mind that car hire excess insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your rental. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a no-deductible option to your Ayr car rental.

Top tips for renting a car in Ayr

  • It’s a great idea to opt for car hire in Ayr when you’re visiting this town on the south-west coast of Scotland. One of the best reasons for this is that you can visit landmarks in the area around the birthplace of Robert Burns, like Culzean Castle and Country Park, which is 12 miles to the south of the town. There’s also the Dalgarven Mill Museum of Country Life and Costume. If you’re travelling with your family, the Heads of Ayr Farm Park is a kids’ paradise with its petting zoo.
  • Flying to the city and getting a hire car in Ayr couldn’t be easier. It’s only 4 miles from the centre of town to Glasgow Prestwick International Airport. After you’ve left the baggage carousel, whether you’ve arrived in the international arrivals hall or the domestic one, follow the signs to the covered walkways leading to the parking areas, and you’ll spot the signs for Avis, Budget, Europcar and plenty of others right there. It’s only a short walk from both terminals.
  • By the standards of a big urban centre, you’ll find the driving generally sedate in Ayr, once you’ve left the busy A77 trunk road that you’ll use to reach the town itself. You’d be advised to slow down when you’re in Ayr and its residential streets, as the rainy weather can cause plenty of potholes, which the local council fixes regularly. So be aware of roadworks when you’re driving in these areas as well. An example would be the Belmont Area, specifically the Meadowpark thoroughfare, Merkland Road and Carrick Avenue.
  • One thing you’ll be accustomed to even if you’ve never been to Ayr before is the inevitable rush hour, even in a smaller town like this. Congestion comes to its peak at similar times to those in your typical UK city, between 08:00 and 09:00 in the mornings and later in the day from 16:00 to 17:00 and tailing off about half an hour later. The busiest roads to avoid during these time are Main Road, especially where it joins Low Road and High Road. The High Street in the busy city centre is also a flashpoint for gridlock.

A moderately sized saloon will be appropriate, unless you’re alone and prefer something smaller and more compact, like an economical city car. However, given that you’re in a picturesque corner of Scotland you may be staying in the town and spending your days exploring the surrounding scenery. In this case, anything from an SUV or MPV to a luxury cruiser will do you well. If you’re travelling in a group, then a people carrier would be a good choice.

  • The speed limit in Ayr is 30mph, which is enforced by means of speed cameras. They’re signposted, but if you’re not familiar with the city, then take advance warning to be careful along the A719 Whitletts Road where it meets Walker Road, and once again when you’re approaching Glenmuir Place. On the A77 that you’ll use to explore the outlying areas, you’ll be free to travel at 70mph.

  • The average petrol price in Ayr is usually on the lower side of the national average, at roughly £1.15. Just be aware that the average price can go up to £1.16 at petrol stations that you’ll find in the surrounding areas of South Ayrshire.

  • You’ll generally have to pay for parking all across town, especially in the town centre, but excluding street parking in the quiet residential areas. Parking costs range from around £0.80 to £2. The car park closest to the centre is in Carrick Street, which is under a 2-minute walk to the shopping and restaurant zone. About a minute further away is the Kyle Centre, which is one of the cheaper car parks. A little further out is Boswell Park and one at Dalblair Road.
