Dropoff experience much better than pickup experiencePros: The staff at the Hertz car rental at York train station were friendly and quick. I was out of the office in less than five minutes. I have nothing but good things to say about the Hertz staff in York.Cons: Nothing negative about my experience in York.

Pros: That I was able to find the place.Cons: The drop off place is well hidden practically inside the train station. No signage to hep you find it. The agent that checked in the vehicle had no means to provide any record of the drop off or the final charges. I am still waiting, a week later, for a confirmation e-mail that all is well and a statement of charges.

Pros: We picked up the car in York, England and drove to Edinburgh, Scotland followed by a tour of western Scotland on the way to Inverness. We drove the next day to my great grandmother's home town, Aberlour. We decided to drive to Wales instead of taking the train. Now we are in Wales and will leave tomorrow for SW England. We have grown attached to our little car and wish we could adopt it.Cons: NOTHING

Not enough parking spaces for drop-offPros: The woman who greeted us at York and got us on our way was very helpful. The car was fine for our needs and gave us no problems.Cons: There was nowhere to leave the car legally when we dropped it off as all the car rental spaces in the York station short-term lot were full, so we had to leave it in a bay reserved for "LNER licensed contractors". The woman who got us on our way warned us that we might have this problem and told us to park the car wherever we could, but it still felt wrong and we hope the car wasn't towed or booted. The rental price seems on the high side, though we did opt for the additional insurance.

Top tips for renting a car in York

  • To make the most of the city and get to see everything, we make it easy and convenient for you to find car hire in York. It’s not a very compact city if you take its suburbs into account, which is another good reason to opt for hiring your own car. Top attractions to visit include the magnificent York Minster cathedral and the city’s medieval walls. Hiring a car will also allow you to visit historic Clifford’s Tower for panoramic views of the city.
  • While York doesn’t have its own airport, York car hire is available at the closest airport that serves the city: Leeds–Bradford Airport, which is roughly 30 miles or a 50-minute drive away. There are plenty of car hire facilities available at the airport, provided by some of the UK’s leading car hire brands, including Avis, Europcar, Hertz and Enterprise. The airport has a dedicated on-site car hire centre to the east of the terminal, and you’ll find all the offices and kiosks there. You won’t need to take a shuttle to get there, as it’s just a short walk from the terminal.
  • Once you’ve sorted out your car hire in York, there are a few things to know about driving in the city and its surrounds. Certain districts in the centre of town have driving restrictions at particular times of day, which is the main thing to be aware of. This means you will have to use one of the six Park & Ride areas in the city. You can park here for free, and then take a bus into the city centre. That said, with the exception of these areas, York is one of the most accessible cities in the UK for drivers.
  • Like most other modern urban areas, York can get very congested during rush hours, with the busiest traffic patterns in Yorkshire. These are between 08:00 and 10:00, and again from 16:00 to 19:00. Traffic is normally gridlocked at these times, so we recommend visiting the centre outside of them. The most congested area is the Hopgrove roundabout connecting the A64 to the outer A1237 ring road. It doesn’t snow more than an average of a few days a year, so you won’t have to worry about poor weather conditions.

  • If you’re going to be spending a lot of time in central York, it's a good idea to hire a car that’s light on petrol and easily manoeuvrable in traffic, like a compact model or an economy car. If you prefer, you can hire a sedan, which will give more interior room. An MPV or SUV will also do you well, as long as it’s not too big. However, if you’re not intending to spend much time in the city itself, then you’re free to choose other models, like a larger 4x4, a luxury vehicle or even a convertible in summer when the weather is mild.

  • Speed limits in York are consistent with those in most parts of the UK, with a 30mph speed limit in the built-up areas, but keep an eye out for specific sections where it is lowered to 20mph, such as near schools. The speed limit increases as you move further from the city centre. On single carriageways you can drive at 60mph, and once you’re on the dual carriageways or motorways, the limit is raised to 70mph.

  • The petrol price in York is a tad lower than in some other cities in the UK, averaging out at around £1.16 per litre. It’s a sizeable city, so you’ll be able to find your preferred brand almost everywhere. BP predominates, but there are a wide variety of others, including plenty of Tesco and Esso stations, as well as the odd Rix, Jet and Sainsbury’s.

  • Parking in the centre of York is free, as long as you use one of the Park & Ride services, but given that you can’t drive into those parts of town, it’s the logical choice. There are over 15 other privately run public car parks that cost anywhere from £4 per day to just under £2 per half-hour.
