Staff were amazing, great place, will accommodate your every need. Showers need a deep clean only downside. Would stay here again
The building and the deco are amazing, the kitchen is well equipped and there's nice outside sitting. The beds are also very comfortable, with your own power outlet and reading light, besides, the rooms are very spacious and bright.
Actually I'd rather suggest something rather than complain: A space for a kettle and some cups out of the lounge/kitchen area would be nice for those who like a cup of tea after the lounge and kitchen are closed (11 pm).
I got to a wall charger with usb sockets and although there were no lockers that were big enough there is lots of space in the room.
I think the kitchen is small, some minor maintenance issues as well.
Beautiful, restored, Georgian building. Great staff. Very clean, comfy bed and pillow. We stayed in 24 bed mixed dorm, very large and comfortable. Reasonably quiet for a hostel. There is a small self-catering kitchen stocked with ample utensils. Breakfast is served in the bar area in the morning for 3 pounds, but is just cereal, toast and coffee. Free instant coffee and tea is available in the kitchen. A full bar and lounge with live weekend music is on the premises with a special bar food dinner menu that is served from 6 pm for 5 pounds and is really worth the money: hamburger with chips, fish and chips with peas and small salad, mac & cheese, others. The burger is very good, charbroiled. Price is unbeatable in Edinburgh. Bar gives 20% off drinks and regular priced dinner menu to hostel guest-good value! Self-self laundry with wash-dry and soap is only 4 pounds.
No lift, lots of stairs, but not an issue for most people who can climb stairs with luggage. The dorm bunks are three high, so top is quite tall. The beds are not pre-made, at check-in they give you a pillowcase and folded on the bed is the duvet and the bottom sheet with elasticized corners (not really a problem to make, simple), however, the top bunk is too tall to do from the outside and is nearly impossible to get the elastic properly around the mattress if you are alone, especially for a shorter person. You have to climb onto the bunk, your weight on the mattress prevents lifting the corner to secure elastic on sheet, or you have to be a agile enough to balance your weight on the rails while you do this. Bunks are first-come, first served, so no guarantee what bed you will get. You take the chance of having to do this at whatever time you come in, even at night, which disturbs those already sleeping. One small issue with staff. One morning around 8:30 to 9:00 am, we were making our breakfast in the kitchen. A young lady was cleaning and not very friendly, she seemed annoyed that we were in her way, she even ran the vacuum on the kitchen floor around us while we were eating at the table in the kitchen. Maybe they should schedule cleaning for after normal breakfast hours, like most hostels from 10:30 am or so. The bar menu is posted inside and outside of the building. To our disappointment, it is not served on Sundays, but it does not say this anywhere! We came back Sunday night exhausted after a day walking and could not get dinner. W were too tired to walk back to store, so we did not eat that night. Luckily, we had had a good lunch in town. Had we known, we could have stopped and eaten or gotten something to cook from the market. Mentioned this to staff, who were apologetic and concerned, yet agreed there should be a sign. Nothing here is a deal-breaker, the value of this hostel is wonderful. Staff is great.
