When Dennis Smith acquired The Shaftesbury, he ensured that, although all necessary upgrading was carried out, it was done sympathetically. Many of the original features were retained, in order that the property could keep its essential character. A huge white marble fireplace dominates what was the Drawing Room and is now part of the restaurant. The other black, marble fireplace - also Victorian - can be found in Room 1. The rooms are all exceptionally spacious, each is different, and each is furnished differently. Room 12, our Honeymoon Suite, is our largest. This delightful room was the Billiard Room, and has the most wonderful Gothic window. It gives the occupant views over Dundee and the River Tay. The Tay has always played an important role in Dundee life, and it can be seen from several rooms. Our bar is large enough to accommodate a 'guid crowd,' yet remains intimate. Friendly bar staff will serve you from a wide range of drinks and refreshments. The period pieces tucked away in the building include the original ceramic fuseboxes and the system for communication with the domestic staff.Proprietor Dennis Smith acquired the premises in 1990, converting the town house into a comfortable retreat for all manner of guests. Being close to Dundee's two universities, The Shaftesbury attracts many visiting academics. Business visitors find the hotel is very convenient for the commercial sector of town too. Internationally renowned Ninewells Hospital and the Technology Park are also close by, and The Shaftesbury is within five minutes of arterial roads north and south. A wide selection of malt whiskies can be sampled in the Garden Bar. Our licence is restricted to residents and restaurant guests only, so you can be sure of a quiet, relaxing evening. The Garden Bar can be hired for meetings during daytime hours.Visitors to The Shaftesbury will be delighted with the fare they find in the hotel's Rachel's Restaurant and the Garden Bar. In fact, the standard of food is so high, many guests say that they make their return visit just to eat at Chef Morrison's table! The Shaftesbury has established a reputation for the quality and variety of its food, cooked by chef Bill Morrison, who has worked with Dennis Smith for over 20 years. If you would like a dish that isn't on the menu when you visit, chef will be happy to cook just for you! He especially loves cooking Scottish Game dishes. A credit card is required as a guarantee. We operate a 48 hour cancellation policy all non arrivals and late cancellations will be charged.

I recommend this hotel to anyone traveling the area, especially those from the US, like me. Located in the historic Crescent community, the hotel is a beautiful building situated in a beautiful, park like neighborhood. Our room was large, and private, with a great view and private bath. The award winning gardens on the property (the loving work of Barbara - with a hand from Douglas here and there, I'm sure) were full of life and aromas - very relaxing after a long day of site seeing. The view from the gardens overlook the firth - breathtaking. The Scottish breakfasts were fabulous and tea was available in the afternoon. Douglas and Barbara are hoteliers (for certain) and run a great Bed and Breakfast!
Pros: The proprietors, Barbara and Douglas, and their staff are warm and welcoming, very knowledgeable of the area for shopping, golfing, and visiting attractions, very accommodating for taxis and breakfasts on the go.
Cons: The hotel is very well kept, very clean, warm, inviting.

Gorgeous grand staircase that any girl can imagine herself floating down like a princess! Ditch the lift and take the stairs!
Contemporary bar with a cosy, intimate feel, enjoyed sampling the cocktails in there.
Check in/out was fast, efficient and friendly. Found the staff to be informative and helpful.
Cons: Would have been an excellent overnight stay but for one or two little niggles.
The room was lovely, unfortunately some construction noise from the building site across the road...not the hotels fault, although it was an upgraded room.
The glass topped desk & tables are a curse for the housekeeping staff as they show up all the bits they hadn't cleaned from the previous guests.
Dinner in the Brasserie was lovely, but the rice that came with my curry although nice and fluffy on top, unfortunately was sitting in water from half way down the bowl and they hadn't deveined the prawn.
Pros: Friendly staff, quiet and and very clean room. Overall a very nice hotel.
Cons: The room was a little dark and the furnishings tend to accentuate this. The duvet on the bed was somewhat oversized for summer and it was hard to get the room cool enough. To be fair, I did not ask to have it changed.
