If city centre definitely stay with river view, close to tram stations. If needing an airport hotel, stay at Quality Hotel for their 24/7 free shuttle and really helpful staff (tired rooms but clean, comfortable beds and ask for the newly renovated spa bathroom with separate shower)!

The area inside the free tram zone is convenient if you won't be traveling outside central Melbourne.
