Top tips for hiring a car at Montevideo Carrasco airport

  • Car hire at Montevideo Carrasco Airport (MVD) has many advantages for the traveller. At around 12 miles from downtown Montevideo, you can almost half your transit time to the city if you drive, as opposed to using public transport, with a journey time of around 30min. You will also benefit from the comfort of your own vehicle, without having to battle with your luggage on crowded buses or trains if you arrive at a busy time. The freedom to explore Montevideo and Uruguay’s surrounding coastline will be yours to enjoy at your own pace and you can reach more remote locations.
  • Expect to find well-maintained roads and good connections from Montevideo Airport and the surrounding regions. Toll booths are common on busier routes. The airport is located just off Route 101, and you can exit via the Rambla to Avenida De Las Americas to take you on to the route, which will then follow along the coastal road to the city centre. You may want to consider a 4x4 vehicle for more difficult terrain in local areas further afield as you may experience more dirt tracks and the occasional river crossing to traverse.
  • If you have a wait at Montevideo Airport, you can make use of the services in the Arrivals Hall whilst you await your car hire. Bars and restaurants are available for refreshments, and you can also find various shops and ATM facilities, as well as luggage storage facilities.
  • Be aware of petrol station opening times in Uruguay as most tend to fall in-between the hours of 06:00 and 20:00, although you can find 24h outlets in the major cities and on the highways if you are looking to re-fill your tank on your return. Also, bear in mind, that headlights are a requirement during the days, as well as at night times when driving in Uruguay and should be kept on dipped during the daylight hours.
  • Book your car hire at Montevideo Carrasco airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

We reserved a car twice through Thrifty at the Montevideo airport. The first time they responded that they couldn't fulfill our reservation. Then we saw availability again, and reserved again. This time no reply, but we called to confirm with them a few days later. They said they did not have any cars available and could not fulfill our request. They never actually cancelled our reservation. Very frustrating??

Passenger van

KAYAK
wasn't given the van that was booked, despite the fact that several were on the lot. Instead was given a subcompact Fiat SUV. Upon return I was told that I had damaged the car. Supposedly there is a new, barely visible scratch on the driver side rear view mirror. If I had inspected every square inch of the vehicle with a loupe, I might have detected this during pick up. But who does that. Now their inspection report describes it as "Total damage" and shows my signature, even though the statement I signed said No Damage. The price was good, but the actual rental experience was terrible

Never got the car, after arriving nobody was in the office and after calling multiple times they didn’t have any reservation made to my name despite having the reservation and itinerary numbers. They shielded behind the excuse of making a deposit to reserve and I was never ask that until that moment, plus no cell service to call customer support to resolve the issue with KAYAK. Someone made a mistake along those lines and I never do it again.

They did not have my reservation and blamed Kayak. They tried to upsell me another car for $100 more and force me to pay insurance even though I have local insurance, international insurance, and insurance via my credit card.

The staff was fantastic, and getting the car and returning it was super easy. However the car was terrible, it was old, and made strange noises multiple times during the trip. We had low confidence it was going to make it to our destination. It was also quite expensive, which made the rental more than frustrating. In the future I will rent from one of the other companies as they all had newer cars.
