The location was great. Half block to Central Park, subway and bus. Bed comfy. Bathroom small but clean and plush. Restaurant had great food.
Scaffolding obscures view and workers during daytime decrease privacy. Friday am, noisy road work started 4:30. No doorman to help when leaving and needing a cab. Pay for in room WiFi. Room cost increased by ~25% various taxes.
I loved the location.
Great location, pretty, away from the hustle and bustle of Times Square/Midtown
Not a business hotel. Need to pay for WIFI. No room service. No coffee machine. Only coffee available is at the breakfast room and they charge you $2.50 just to get a cup in the morning. Not the expense but the nuisance and inconvenience. No shops on site. Just vending machine. They try to pretend to be upscale here but nothing about it is upscale - from the property to amenities to service. Hugely disappointing.
The Excelsior is a classic hotel that is the absolute opposite of an impersonal chain hotel. From management to front desk to housekeeping the Excelsior staff is welcoming and extremely accommodating. We have stayed at the Excelsior several times during the prior couple of years and our rooms are consistently clean, comfortable and quiet. Rates will vary based upon the season and supply and demand factors but typically we have found the Excelsior to be the best hotel value in the upper west side.
Fee for WI-fi but as a workaround we used our smartphone as a hot spot for our tablets so really no problem.
I love the Excelsior, the staff, the location, the cleanliness, just so easy, so accommodating.
Always the desk personnel are lovely, the last day, the 29th, the desk man was a bit condescending. I've never had that experience before, but upon asking him about leaving my bags after check-out, asking about a taxi to the airport, he almost dismissed me, as if I were an annoyance. Unfortunate, but true. The desk man when I arrived on the 2nd, was lovely, very patient, very accommodating. I've stayed here before, never had that experience, so it must've been a bad day for him.
Great location for the finish of the New York City Marathon. Comfortable beds.
No free wifi in the rooms and only one internet access in the lobby. No facilities for tea /coffee in the room. Room was overly hot and cooling fan rather noisy. Breakfast choice was a bit limited
the area the access to the park and nothing else
they did not switch on the heating when we asked, the answers of the staff were always like in a bad mood. its a pitty that we extend our stay for another 4 nigths when we arrived
Location was excellent. Cabs, metro all accessable. Lots of good places to eat and shop that were close by. Lots of park greenery to make it relaxing. Atmosphere of the hotel and clientelle are very friendly.
I was at this hotel for 3 nights and enjoyed in the early fall on my own little party vacation. Very clean and good price. One front desk employee was rude but the other couldn't have been any nicer and helpful so just know who to go to. The staff was also the only knock I had or had read about in my research for the trip. Night life was younger about a $15-$20 cab ride away but day time had plenty to offer. Well worth price and would go again with a date.
Ok standard and clean rooms. Very good location near Central park and 1/2 block from subway on 81st.
Small rooms and unfriendly night staff.
Visited Central Park and the us Open tennis tournament. Both were very accessible from the hotel - either a short walk or via the subway. Would definitely stay there again.
The location is excellent. It is right across the street from The American Museum of Natural History and adjacent to Central Park. The neighborhood is great--lots of families out walking and lots of dogs. There are lots of restaurants within walking distance. I am a middle-age female, and I walked around at night and felt safe. Also, a subway stop is across the street. I had a car, and I parked overnight at the museum garage for $26 per night. The hotel was quiet, and the staff was friendly.
The room I stayed in was adequate, but it was not as luxurious as the picture on the website. The desk chair was worn out. Very small TV . Had to pay for internet service and had tech problems with it. The bathroom was clean, but a bit small and quaint--like staying at my great aunt's home. The air conditioning ran full blast the whole time, and still the room was too warm and stuffy for me to sleep comfortably. My room was on the 7th floor and I had to take the elevator to either the 3rd or 11th floor to get ice every day. Also, soda and snack machines are on different floors. Too much hassle!
The bedroom is luxurious. Having the sitting room with a second TV was great- have not seen that elsewhere..Loved having open parking across the street at the Museum of Natural History. Many good restaurants nearby. And Central Park-
I thought the welcome was thin- they did not tell us that breakfast could be had on Floor 2- even just coffee. Did not have coffee pots in room-I missed that.
The hotel was located in a good spot for visiting NYC. Its location to many attractions is great.
Help with parking facilities would have helped. it seemed you were pretty much on your own for parking.
I liked the location next to Central Park.
I was given a lower-grade room with twin single beds instead of twin double beds initially. On questioning why the response from front desk had an air of "we almost got away with it" and "we are doing you a favor moving you into the better room." I had to book a room online because obstacles and excuses were given when I tried to amend my booking slightly.
