Pros: I especially enjoyed the free walk. It was on my first day and I met quite a few people I connected with over the next few days. It provided a great orientation to the area around the hostel. I also enjoyed my four-woman dorm accommodation. My roommates were quiet, friendly and thoughtful. I loved the location. It was close to public transportation, there was a convenience store opposite and plenty of nearby restaurants. I was looking forward to the biking the bridge tour, but it was cancelled because of rain. It turned out well because I biked the bridge independently with another woman from the hostel on a beautiful sunny day. We asked for the hostel discount at Blazing Saddles and paid $18 instead of $32.

Pros: It's cheap and you get about what you expect for $50 in San Francisco. The accommodations were moderately decent considering the location. I was expecting it to be slightly more bare-bones so expecting literally nothing I was cool with how it all worked out.
Also the location in terms of how close it is to everything is pretty great. It's right next to Japan Town, China Town and Haight & Ashbury, so that was cool.
Don't expect much more than a convenient location in the ghetto.

Pros: Nothing good to say, this hostel was absolutely disgusting. Mold on our ceiling, shower, garbage left in basket when arrived in room. The shared bathrooms had sanitary napkins on the floor and were dirty. Blood on the curtains in our room. Our sheet wasn't even on the bed. The lock on our door was faulty. We woke up with little clusters of small red bumps and ended up finding a bed bug.

Pros: You're getting what you pay for. The owner, and potentially only staff member is why this place gets a two. He is an old school Italian born and raised in the house of hard knocks of New England. Really talkative and down to earth, but if you do him wrong, he will rip you a new one. I don't know if I obtained a steal, but I paid $50 for a private room on the Monday following the city's pride parade.
