Where’s hot in Europe in April?

If you’re keen to stick closer to home for your April escape, you’re in luck. Spain has several balmy locales to choose between (including stunning Seville). Or you could hop across the Med to Greece to explore Athens in the spring sunshine.

1. Athens, Greece

  • Average temperature in April: 16°C

You can’t really go wrong with visiting Greece at any time of year. The country is a hot spot for incredible trips away (especially beach breaks) and, of course, has very favourable weather for most of the year. But where is hot in Greece in April? Heading to its magnificent capital of Athens is always a safe bet.

Spend your days stepping back in time at various ancient sites like the Acropolis and the Temple of Athena. Temperatures are perfect for exploring the ruins, with average highs sitting at a comfy 19°C. You might experience the odd rain shower in April. If that does happen, simply take shelter in one of the city’s fantastic museums. My favourite is the treasure trove that is the National Archaeological Museum.

2. Málaga, Spain

  • Average temperature in April: 16°C

April is an ideal time to experience Málaga’s warm Mediterranean climate. With average temperatures reaching 16°C and highs of 21°C, you’ll enjoy pleasant spring weather perfect for exploring the Costa del Sol without the intense summer heat. Minimal rainfall keeps days sunny and bright, ideal for beach walks and outdoor sightseeing.

This shoulder season offers excellent value for UK travellers, with competitive flight prices starting from around £162. Explore historic Alcázaba fortress, relax on golden beaches, or wander charming old town streets. April brings perfect conditions for both cultural exploration and leisurely seaside relaxation before peak summer crowds arrive.

3. Seville, Spain

Wondering where is hot in April in Spain? The Andalusian city of Seville is a brilliant spot for a spring getaway. It is a stunning destination with impressive architecture, delicious tapas and heaps of flamenco bars.

There’s no better time to appreciate just how beautiful this city is than under the warm April sun and with considerably less crowds than in the summer months. You might encounter a tiny bit of rain during your trip – but that shouldn’t deter you from taking a trip to Seville.

Temperatures can comfortably reach the low 20s, so you’re bound to have a few sunny days where you can dine alfresco and stroll the gorgeous gardens of the Real Alcázar.

4. Lisbon, Portugal

April brings mild warmth to Portugal’s captivating capital, with temperatures averaging 15°C and highs reaching 19°C. This vibrant Moroccan city is a brilliant place to visit in spring for history, culture and fantastic shopping opportunities in local bazaars. Temperatures on the warmest days can easily exceed 23°C, making it a fantastic destination for a sunny break, too.

A little bit of rain can be expected. The upside of this, though, is that it makes the city’s gardens lush with spring blooms, including the elegant grounds of Koutoubia Mosque. Additionally, you’ll likely still find flights and accommodation much cheaper compared to summer — which is all the more reason to book a break to Marrakech in April.

Ho Chi Minh City is a great city in its own right but also a popular spot to begin a larger tour of the entire country. Many of its attractions relate to the Vietnam War, including the moving War Remnants Museum. You could also barter for cheap souvenirs at historic Ben Thanh Market.

And if the heat starts to get to you? There’s plenty of cool coffee shops and bars to dip into for an ice cold drink. Don’t forget to try a banh mi (or three), either. These delicious sandwiches hail from HCMC and you’ll find lots of places where you can sample the real deal.
