1
8.0 Excellent (1,605 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Located in Barnstaple, The Cedars Inn by Greene King Inns is by the ocean, a 4-minute drive from Pannier Market and 7 minutes from Basett's Ridge. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. Free self parking is available onsite.
7.0 Good
Pros: Staff very friendly. Rooms clean.
Cons: Our room was, apparently near the boiler for the rooms and was noisy making it difficult to sleep. Restaurant was chilly when we had our evening meal.
9.0 Excellent
Cons: Towel rail wasn’t working and one bedside light not working
7.0 Good
Pros: Room and en-suite very cosy. Breakfast good, with hot and cold options; dinner typical, but decent, varied choice pub menus. Good beer. Service excellent and would particularly like to mention Kimberly for friendliness, helpfulness and efficiency. Staff very responsive. Good location if you have your own transport.
Cons: Room rather small, with only one chair. Only option to watch TV was to lie on the bed. Also the duvet was too warm, with no alternative bedding available. Main dining area was in the conservatory, which, on the first night had no heating and the ambient temperature was too cool.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: When our croissant went up in flames and black smoke in the toaster oops sorry! :)
Cons: Staff work too many hours.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Liked the ‘outside’ bedroom with own front door.
Cons: Nothing really, it was cheap, convenient and comfortable. Walls a little thin!
7.0 Good
Pros: OK hotel - run of the mill in most aspects.
Cons: It is just "OK" - very average.... It could be cleaner - the decor could be better - the facilities could be better etc etc.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Reception staff very helpful. Bed extremely comfortable. Breakfast very good and nice to see good quality products being supplied. Evening meal, which was charged separately, was really good value for money. Tea and coffee supplies in the room were generous and biscuits delicious, and again good quality. Yes I will be going back again.
Cons: We were given a downstairs room initially, but after a couple of hours listening to the people above walking about in what sounded like hob nailed boots on a wooden floor, we asked to be moved. We were given another room, upstairs this time, which was far nicer, fresher and lighter. The first room was incredibly gloomy and even with all the lights on, it had a very depressing feel to it, plus it smelt peculiar. The whole place needs a coat of paint, a stiff broom outside and a tidying up of the gardens. It could look really nice.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: N/A
Cons: Very clean room, spot on, decoration inside, lots of space to park a car. Really good breakfast.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff very helpful. Our original room was a little small and my husband found it claustrophobic, the staff kindly found us an alternative room which was more spacious and on checking out we were pleasantly surprised to find we had not been charged any extra. The whole hotel was clean and the modern decor of clean lines and minimal colour was very attractive and relaxing. Nice bar area with friendly staff and we had a very good meal in the restaurant and was given a 20% discount voucher by reception to use for the meal - bonus!
Cons: Our only issue was the size of the room we were initially given but this was resolved by the reception staff very quickly.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Modern decor, very clean and tidy. Staff were helpful and approachable. Happy to chat but kept a discreet distance until approached. The hotel is well located, with Rock Park opposite giving access to riverside walks and then in the other direction the town centre. Barnstaple itself was a real suprise, with plenty of local/regional outlets alongside national chains. I was more like town centres used to be and we're envious.......
Cons: Twin beds could have been spaced more widely as it was more like a king size with different duvets! Heating/air-con would have benefitted from a few simple instructions in the form of a booklet and underfloor heating in the bathroom would have been a nice touch as the tiled floor was a bit cold.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Very modern and new

9.6 Excellent
Pros: The property was amazing, was so much bigger than we expected! So cozy and so clean! Rachel on reception was lovely and so helpful. Location was peaceful and scenery was beautiful.
Cons: Only con was the heating, the floors were heated and the room felt like a sauna it was a struggle to sleep through it however we were compensated for this with a free late check out!
7.0 Good
Pros: The staff, we're all amazing, especially the young lady, jade I think, what a lovely young lady, polite, good for a laugh, professional, nothing was too much trouble. Staff in restaurant were knowledgeable about food they were serving & the different types of wine. Exceptional for young ones. Thank you. Food fab.
Cons: We had dampness in our room. Robes were like sandpaper! The electric socket was unsafe, as not working properly & was arcing inside it??? Was reported, as dangerous!! The weather could of been kinder,BUT it is only February....♥️
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful property in wonderful setting. Staff were all extremely friendly and attentive. Food was amazing!
Cons: If it is true, it is a terrible shame for all concerned that it has had to suddenly close indefinitely. Really feel for the staff and the owners who have clearly invested so much.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely location and very comfortable surroundings. Room and beds very comfortable. Good service. Wonderful tasting menu with great service and interesting wine selections. Catered for all our needs.

Pros: Everything
Cons: N/A
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely room, beautifully decorated and furnished. Very welcoming staff and a great location.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I liked the cleanliness of the bathroom. I rarely use the tub when staying at a hotel. But the white towels, heated bathroom and overall cleanliness caused me to make an exception. It was truly a good experience and you certainly have found a repeat customer.
Cons: I was unable to get anyone to answer the reception phone after 10pm. I was in desperate need of a bottle of still water as I drink water over night. After several unanswered calls, I gave up. However I found the kettle in the room, boiled some and waited for it to cool.
7.0 Good
Pros: The proximity to the town. Room was comfortable, although there was no view even though it was a superior room. Reception and bar staff were very good.
Cons: We had a problem with a meal and one of the staff members, but when we came to pay our bill for our stay the management reacted appropriately re our complaint and compensated us accordingly. The Table D'Hote menu and A la carte pricing was confusing. It would be better if the two were separate rather than one being a price supplement on the other. It was a stated price for two courses but it was difficult to establish whether you could just have one course and pay accordingly. The vegan options were overpriced for what was served.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The atmosphere and location of the hotel
Cons: I request to have large double beds at the time of marking reservation, but at last only regular beds be provided.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very comfortable bed. Warm and nicely furnished room. Friendly welcome
6.0 Good
Pros: Breakfast was good, although service a little slow.
Cons: room was clean and tidy but unfortunately I didn't sleep well as someone was trying to get into my room. There was also a large water/waste pipe which runs above the bathroom ceiling which creates a loud noise whenever someone in the room above flushes the toilet or has a shower!
8.0 Excellent
Pros: All good
Cons: Hotel advertised parking. I had a van full of equipment. The dedicated parking is across the road and not lit. Owner advised that my van would probably be safer parked on the street round the corner. The van was OK in the morning so the owner was right. Not what I was hoping for when a hotel says it has parking, but given the location there obviously isn't room for parking. Also sat nav sends you up the street. I had to resort to Google maps to find it.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Bedding and bathsheets very comfortable
Cons: TV on wall as couldn't see over posts and paid for breakfast but didn't start till 8.30am

9.0 Excellent
Pros: very interesting site, nice gallery and great gardens
7.9 Good
Pros: Food was amazing. The sculptures and art was quirky and fun.
Cons: So noisy. Bedroom was at the top of the stairs and guests could sit in the hallway at the bottom of the stairs. We tried to sleep but dinner guests were leaving. Also we had to ask for the kitchen radio to be turned down.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Waking up to bird song and a wonderful breakfast.
Cons: Tepid shower didn't spoil the stay though.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Wonderfully arty hotel in a superbly quiet, countryside location yet only a stone’s throw from Barnstaple. Lovely decor in this characterful building and so much to interest & admire in all the paintings and sculptures indoors and also in the garden. Our en suite room was adequate with coffee/tea making and simple toiletries and with a great view of gardens. We were lucky to get a table that evening as the restaurant was very full but understandably as the food was excellent, as was the organic, sulphite-free Shiraz. There was an ample buffet breakfast with excellent a la carte options as well.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Meals were superb. We liked that our dog was welcome. The surroundings and the art throughout was fabulous. Staff were great, friendly and relaxed.
Cons: Outside in the gardens, we felt some of the signage needed attention. We would have liked an itemised bill to take away.

Cons: Nothing
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Tranquil setting. Very clean and well equipped apartment with small extra, and thoughtful touches. Lovely shower room with power shower and plenty of hot water. Comfortable bed. Friendly, welcoming and helpful hosts.
Cons: The property is old and has the charm of a bygone era, but in my view needs some updating for today's market. The kitchenette area of the two bedroom apartment, in particular needs to be remodelled as it was a challenge to use and would benefit from an open plan approach. I wonder whether the owners have plans and it is a work in progress. My comments are meant to be constructive and not critical.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Lovely fresh and clean en suite and great shower. All good with room too. Only stopped one night because we were on our way to Cornwall.

Pros: We were met with big smiles and tea and cake on the sunny terrace. The breakfast was lovely - lots to choose from. They don't do evening meals but reservations were arranged at the Hunter's Inn and the owner picked us up after dinner as it's a steep walk back and we were tired from a long hike that day.
Cons: Can't think of anything.

Cons: No complaints at all....

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location, Breakfast fabulous! Gorgeous rooms and staff really attentive.
Cons: Dinner at the Hotel was not as excellent as I was hoping for. I expected the food better but I’m afraid it was average.
8.0 Excellent
Cons: Downstairs facilities were amazing ,spa, pool, lounge areas and cinema were a bonus. The location is great, 2 minutes to the beach and to the town. Room needed a makeover, bathroom dated and tired. Room was small but view was lovely. Very clean with lots of nice touches . Reception staff excellent, cinema staff were terrible made a mistake on our entry fee and then wanted us to go and pay once the film had started. No communication between the staff which made it embarrassing for us. Cinema is a must , shame they had the same film showing on the two nights we were there as we would have gone both nights. We were recommended to book the restaurant but we didn't and when we walked past there was no one in there so disappointed . We didn't eat in the hotel on either evenings. Breakfast was nice, staff didn't have 4 star abilities asked for full cooked breakfast and she had to go get a pad to write it down. As the hotel was so quiet disappointed that we got a dated room , does that mean they are all dated? Overall a great stay we loved the location and the facilities are recently updated which makes a massive difference.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was amazing. Good gym and pool
Cons: Too hot in the room. Smoke detector flashing all night in our room

Pros: Very welcoming hosts who provided us with an excellent breakfast. We also liked the location which was within easy reach of all the places of interest that we wanted to visit. We would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and have every intention of staying there again.
Cons: There was nothing to dislike everything met our expectations.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We were accommodated on the ground floor as my wife has issues with stairs. No problem for the proprietors

Pros: Wonderful place, beautiful location, very friendly welcoming hosts.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We were met with big smiles and tea and cake on the sunny terrace. The breakfast was lovely - lots to choose from. They don't do evening meals but reservations were arranged at the Hunter's Inn and the owner picked us up after dinner as it's a steep walk back and we were tired from a long hike that day.
Cons: Can't think of anything.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: We received a super friendly welcome and an offer of tea and chocolate cake, which was very welcome after a long walk along the coast path. Dinner was down the hill at the Hunters Inn and we were offered a lift at the end of our meal to save our legs. Pat and Mark made our stay very pleasant indeed, nothing was too much trouble and we felt very welcome.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Heddons Mouth Hotel is set in an idillyic location very close to Heddons Mouth itself and The Hunters Inn which is a great watering hole for whilst you are there. The owners are extremely friendly and I felt at home immediately, views are to die for and lots of parking for guests. The route in is narrow and not for the faint hearted but par for the course in Devon and Cornwall so not unexpected. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel as it is in a beautiful setting and an ideal place to relax or go exploring from either on foot or by car. I will definitely be back :-)
Cons: No complaints at all....

Thank you. Food fab.
