Grate Service & friendly staffPros: Brand new vehicle. Giving that the airport in Transilvania Cluj Napoca Romania is fairly new at this type of service. Professional service Kudos to staff member Daniel Dan. I will be renting from this location again. Sincerely Petru C
a waste of timePros: nothingCons: On arrival found out that Payless does not have an office in airport. Representative was suppose to be outside Arrivals Hall, but was not there. Called office for assistance and was promised that he would be there in a few minutes, but never arrived. After additional calls to office asking status, I gave up and rented from Avis whose service was spectacular.

Cluj Napoca is one place where you’ll really appreciate the ability to hire your own car. There’s nothing wrong with the public transport system; it’s that the city is in an area that full of Medieval folklore and places you’ll read about and want to drive off to see. The city is known for its mixture of Gothic and Baroque architecture, as with the prime attraction in the town, the 15th-century St Michael’s Church. You’ll also be in the heart of Dracula country, so you shouldn’t miss the National Museum of Transylvanian History. To experience historical Transylvanian life, travel just beyond the western outskirts to the Romulus Vuia Ethnographic Park. Car hire in Cluj Napoca will give you access to all of these.
Upon landing at Cluj Napoca International Airport, also known as Avram Iancu Airport, it won’t be difficult to find your way to where your hire car will be waiting for you. You’ll have a good choice of local and international brands like Hertz, Sixt and Enterprise. They’re all located inside the relatively small terminal, with the car park a couple of minutes’ walk from there. Then it’s only just over 4 miles from the airport to get to the centre of town.
An important thing to be aware of when booking your car hire in Cluj Napoca is that it’s an old city that has had a modern facelift, so be prepared for narrow streets in the central district, and make allowances for any oncoming vehicles so as not to block each other’s way. When you’re driving outside town to visit the tourist attractions, be careful on the narrow roads that have no shoulders, especially in the surrounding mountain areas. You should also be aware that there are no passing lanes, so the local practice is for an overtaking car to encroach into your lane and in return you politely move across to accommodate this.
You’ll find that traffic isn’t that busy during most of the day – however, do bear in mind that it is one of the most visited cities in Romania, due to the myths surrounding the history of the area. You should expect a bit of traffic build-up at any time of the day, as well as during the rush hour times when it can get pretty congested around 08:00 and from 16:00–17:00, especially along Main Street 4K and the Avenue of Heroes.

These will give you ease of driving in the city centre and also serve you well on the mountainous roads just outside. If you can get a 2x4 version, that will be even better – remember those shoulder-less roads. Otherwise, you can hire a full-blown 4x4 if you’re intending to spend most of your stay exploring the surrounding cultural heritage sites, but then be prepared to negotiate traffic a bit more carefully in town itself.
