Mexico City car hire experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travellers who hired a car in Mexico City

Although pricey, I would recommend to purchase additional insurance- driving through Mexico City potholes, is very easy to damage a car. Also, rocks on the road nearly cracked our windshield. These things are unavoidable.
Verified travelerAug 2024
Make sure that you ask if car will have local plates and that insurance is covered.

Take a Uber, cheaper, faster ( traffic is horrible everywhere in the city everyday) you would regret having a rental. No where to park ect.

KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Mexico City

  • Mexico City has a lot to offer -- and what better way to explore it all than with a hire car? Discover the beauty of nature many of the surrounding nature parks have on display, or venture out into adjoining areas without worrying about train timetables or delayed public transport. As hire cars are also pretty affordable, it is, in most cases, cheaper to drive around than to take public buses and trains.
  • Benefit from the many car hire agencies located at Mexico International Airport such as Avis, Europcar, or Hertz. The car hire desks can be found at Terminal 1, even though Terminal 2 also has some service desks available and a shuttle bus operates between the two terminals.
  • Driving in Mexico City can be overwhelming at first, but if taking their time and driving carefully and attentively, drivers will get used to it quickly. Adhering to the lane lines is not as clear as in many US cities and cars may cut into your lane suddenly and without a turn signal, so driving defensively and slowly is important.
  • Avoid Mexico City’s rush hour, as traffic here is among the worst in the country during peak times. Morning rush hour is between 6 and 9 PM and in the evening from 6 to 9 PM, so try driving to your destination outside these times. Driving at night is also not advisable in the city because it can be dangerous, especially in specific areas like Tepito or Doctores. Keep to the main roads when driving, during the day and at night, especially when you are alone in the car.
  • The requirements for cheap car hire in Mexico City may vary depending on the rental company and their policies, but there are a few general requirements that are usually common to all companies. You must have a current driver's licence from your home country. An International Driving Permit may also be necessary, according to some car rental agencies policies. Additionally, you will need to present a credit card with enough credit to cover the cost of the rental plus an additional security deposit to secure the rental. The minimum age for those who wish to get a Mexico car hire is typically 25 years old. However, some rental agencies may allow drivers who are below 25 to rent a car, but they may be subject to additional fees.
  • It's important to note that driving a cheap car hire in Mexico City can be challenging due to heavy traffic, narrow streets and frequent construction. It's recommended that visitors exercise caution while driving and be familiar with local traffic laws and regulations. Additionally, many of the historical and tourist areas in the city centre may have limited parking, so it's important to plan ahead and be prepared to navigate crowded streets and find parking.
  • Driving a cheap car hire in Mexico City under the influence of alcohol is illegal and considered a criminal offence in Mexico City. Traffic police usually pull over drivers and require them to undergo a breathalyser test. Those found to have alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit will face severe legal consequences, including fines, imprisonment, and/or revocation of their driver's licence. The legal blood alcohol content (BAC) limit in Mexico City is 0.04%.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire in Mexico City for £27 or less
  • Book your car hire in Mexico City at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Intermediate hire cars in Mexico City are around 59% cheaper than other car types, on average

FAQs about car hire in Mexico City

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Mexico City?

There are no special requirements for driving in Mexico, but a compact car is always a sensible choice in a big city. Even more importantly, make sure that the hire car is properly insured and take notes (or photos) of any scratches on the car in advance to prove it was not your fault upon returning it, should claims be made.

When I arrived at the pickup location, they didn't have a car for me and told me they didn't have a reservation for me. So, I had to move all my plans and assume all the additional costs that the inconvenience caused to me. Renting a car in Mexico is a complete mess. The cars are so basic. Police are waiting for you at the exit of the rental car location to fine you for a random reason they will make up. The insurance is extremely expensive. There are so many reason more I don't recommend to rent a car in Mexico.

Pros:

Nothing, everything was wrong with my reservation. The Car, the price, the extra fees, the knowledge of the personnel at the pickup

Cons:

I reserved a 7 seat car and they offered me a 5 seat truck because they don't have 7 seat car on their inventory. Alamo doesn't have 7 seat cars or trucks. They have only 5 seat cars. I don't know why Kayak - Alamo offers 7 seat cars to customers and they don't have cars with that capacity. I called in advance Alamo to ask for extra insurance fees and an agent at their contact center confirmed there are no extra insurance fees because my reservation has included insurance and reservation fees, but at the pick-up location, they charged no refundable 2,000 dollars for the insurance fee plus 1,500 dollars refundable retention fee on my credit card. Clearly, the agent at the front desk was inexperienced and constantly he was asking my questions to his coworker. Finally, I asked him to call his manager to try to solve my questions. Also, The manager did not know Kayak is offering 7 seat trucks and did not know about the high insurance fees. The worst car rental experience. Poor customer service and lack of professionalism. Cons:

Our flight was delayed and the Alamo office was closed in the terminal we arrived in (terminal 2). We went directly and as quickly as we could to the old terminal where the office was open. We got there a little after 3pm and they refused to honor the rental. Quadrupled the price and told us we were too late for the original quote. We did not get a car and it made our trip a bit challenging. Very frustrating.
