A medium size car is best. You can park on the street or paid parking around the city. We always get insurance to cover any incidents. It's not very expensive. I think there are only 4 streets with traffic signals, so you need to pay attention when coming to every intersection. Traffic moves well and just need to take turns crossing through intersections. Attendants pour gas. They take money for the gas, so you never need to get out of yoir car. We always tip the gas attendents.

My experience with Alamo, and kayak in general, was awful. We reserved a car in a foreign country with the expectation of picking it up, but when we got there they told us there were no cars left for us. We were then told to get a cab back to the airport to try to rent a car there, and Alamo again had no other cars left so we went to another agency entirely. Alamo had nothing to offer us and I am disturbed by the “service” that kayak claims to offer. We wasted an entire day in desperation trying to fix Kayak’s wrongdoings and I do expect a refund of the hold fee as well as vouchers if they every expect us to utilize their website again.

My experience with this rental service was deeply disappointing from start to finish. What should have been a straightforward vehicle pickup turned into a series of avoidable failures, unsafe conditions, and complete lack of accountability. The combination of absurd charges, vehicle bait‑and‑switch, unsafe equipment, and zero communication makes this one of the worst rental interactions I’ve encountered. 1. Failure to Honor Scheduled Pickup Despite having a confirmed reservation, the rental office was: Closed at the scheduled pickup time Unstaffed, with no signage or instructions Completely unresponsive to calls or messages This forced unnecessary delays and immediately signaled a lack of professionalism and operational reliability. 2. Unapproved Vehicle Switch When someone finally arrived, I was informed that the vehicle I reserved was not available, with no explanation or apology. Instead, I was given: A lower‑quality replacement vehicle With no prior notice And no adjustment in pricing despite the downgrade This kind of bait‑and‑switch behavior is unacceptable in any legitimate rental operation. 3. Unsafe Vehicle Condition The replacement vehicle was not just inferior—it was dangerously unfit for use: Tires were visibly worn and poorly maintained The car handled poorly from the start One tire blew out during normal driving, putting us at real risk This was not a random incident; it was the predictable result of renting out a vehicle that should never have been on the road. 4. Attempted Charges for Their Negligence Adding insult to injury, I am now being told I will be charged for the blown tire, despite: The vehicle being unsafe at pickup The tire failure being directly caused by their lack of maintenance My immediate reporting of the issue Charging customers for damage caused by the company’s own negligence is unethical and predatory. 5. No Support, No Communication Following the incident, I reached out multiple times over the next week. I received: No response No acknowledgment No assistance No resolution A rental company that refuses to communicate after providing unsafe equipment is not just unprofessional—it’s irresponsible. 6. Limited and Inconvenient Return Hours To make matters worse, the company: Does not accept returns after 6 PM Provides no after‑hours drop‑off option Offers no flexibility despite their own operational failures This creates unnecessary inconvenience and further demonstrates their lack of customer‑centric policies. Final Assessment This rental service failed at every stage of the customer journey: Unreliable operations Dishonest vehicle substitution Unsafe, poorly maintained cars Unjustified charges Nonexistent customer support The experience was not just frustrating—it was unsafe. No customer should be placed in a position where a rental company’s negligence leads to a blown tire on the road and then attempts to bill the customer for it. Until this company addresses its operational failures, safety standards, and customer service practices, I cannot recommend them under any circumstances.

The deposit for the car was 3,000usd which you had to let them charge you on a card and then refund later. The process was unorganized and took so much longer than necessary. There were tons of hidden fees they required as well so the price of the rental on the website was actually less than the total price I had to pay.

Well they are a scam. They charged us 88 dollars for an insurance that covered the 90%, he did something small to the car and made us to pay the full price. They also tricked us to pay it there instead to reducing the money from the deposit saying that it would help us to get the money back from the insurance, and then we discovered it was a lie 🙂!

The price of the rent looked very good. However, when you arrive you learn that you have to buy insurance. The insurance packages are more expensive then the rent of the car itself. If you don't insure, they will ask >13.000 USD as deposit for a car that's not even worth that amount of money. They ask insane prices for any damage inflicted and are trying to find every little details they can. Never experienced this before. For every renter here, I advise you take pictures of everything, inside and out. Don't forget one spot because they will not. They will search your car untill they fiend anything they can use to let you pay more. Very poor service.

I returned the car after one day of a 4 day rental. The doors locks were compromised, the phone charger didn’t work, no blue tooth. They denied returning my insurance fees the the three days I did not have the car for. I would never recommend them.

I have rented cars around the world during my various travels, none has been remotely this bad. Our car broke down right after midnight on NYE, in the middle of nowhere, 1 hour away from Puerto Escondido, where our hotel was. We called the "24-Hour" Roadside assistance, which was a MexRentacar person, who would not believe we couldn't move the car. Kept telling us we need to bring the car to an office the next day. We sent him pic of dashboard and location. He told us Roadside Assistance would call us in 15 minutes. We told him we didn't feel safe as we had our luggage, passports, cash, and were at a gas station. For the next 3 hours, we kept calling him, and he would hang up on us (I have pics of my call log), he gave us the number for the Insurer, and we called them, who told us Roadside will call in 15 minutes. After 2 hours, around 2:30am, they called, and told up they can get there at 8 am. We called Mex and Insurer back saying they need to get us to the hotel and that we weren't going to spend the next 6 hours there. They kept insisting we couldn't leave the car and had to stay with it. We finally left the keys with the gas station attendant and flagged down a cab that was getting gas, and paid him US$120 to take us to the hotel. The next morning, we kept calling to find out if they picked up the car and if they would get us a new one. Each time we called, we got a different answer, which were version of "Once the car is picked up and looked at, they will call us to tell us what they'll do", with no time frame given. We got a car to their office at the airport to see what the deal was. This was 11am. The car was still not picked up. The manager was upset that we left the car there and not stayed with it, instead of apologizing for their car breaking down and putting us in danger. They wanted us to drive an hour back to the car with the tow truck, to bring the car back, another hour, then they were going to look at it and see if it wasn't drivable, then they would give us a new car, I was so furious and told them they cared more about the car than our safety, and instead of apologizing for ruining our NYE and getting us a car to our hotel, they were acting like we were somehow at fault. Told her I was not about to spend the rest of that day doing their job and that they needed to do whatever they needed and get us a car asap, as we were supposed to drive to another town 3 hrs away> She finally gave in, and had a driver drive us to the car in a new rental. He turned the car on and saw that it wouldn't drive, and gave us the new car and we went on our way. Apparantly, 24-hr assistance does not mean 24-hrs. And the fact that they doubted us that the car was actually not drivable was unbelievable. I will NEVER rent from them again, and will go after them for the US $150 that we spent to get us to the hotel and then to their office.

Had a reservation in the Oaxaca city center location. Showed up and was told there are no cars but they would arrange one at the airport. I came back at the appointed time and was told there are no cars in city or airport. Wasted hours Avoid!!!!

The pickup process was significantly delayed. Drop-off was a major inconvenience as the location did not open at 6:00 AM as advertised on their website. This forced us to separate as a family and make multiple trips back to the rental car. Furthermore, we were charged for fuel, with the claim that the tank was 1/8th lower than when we received the vehicle. The method used to determine this 1/8th difference is unclear. Would not recommend.

They wanted to charge me 4500 USA dollars for a insurance I didn’t need I showed them my aaa that’s covers there rental and said Nop rented cars before lots of them never had this happened but in the end it worked better we really didn’t need it….
