The noise from the bar was very loud and raucous until midnight preventing sleep. There was no warning of this.
Friendly staff, good food, pleasant public rooms. Standard rooms very clean but small. Bath only 3/4 size.
Friendliness of proprietors and staff and general ambience - we really enjoyed being there
Really good location literally just off the A40.Loads of places to eat in Monmouth or Ross if didnt want to eat in the hotel.Breakfasts were fantastic. Our room was lovely really olde world. All the staff were lovely, very helpful especially the receptionist when we were booking in.
the room was lovely - exactly as described, the food was fantastic and the owners were simply some of the most helpful and friendly hosts i have met during hotel stays - definitely on my exclusive list of hotels to re-visit.
The welcome from the staff. The atmosphere of the hotel beams and the quirkey rooms, The wonderful breakfasts also the views from the garden. Chocolates in the room, very nice. A couple of leather sofas would be nice in the conservatory for reading as the light is good.
We found everyone to be very friendly and helpful. The hotel was warm and cosy and the food we had was delicious and well presented. We felt that the hotel needed a bit of redecoration and the hand basin in our room was badly cracked and needs replacing.
There was nothing at all we could say about this hotel which was complimentary. The scruffy and grubby state of the hotel
The food, and also the friendly staff We had a four poster room which did not have a working radiator, we were provided with a n electric heater which took the chill of the room but it would have made a nice stay excellent if the room had been centrally heated
Good location.Great room.Friendly and helpul staff.Good dining facilities with good food and good service. A little bit to warm in room with no way to turn heating down.Having said that temperatures for time of year were well above normal.
Friendly staff, comfortable room, excellent food in restaurant Room rather overpriced. Restaurant wine very expensive
the local facilities
Friendly staff nothing
staff very friendly
friendly, helpful staff, beautiful setting no
Location to castle wedding venue. Rooms were not heated on arrival on a bitterly cold day. Same complaint heard from fellow visitors.
we were made very welcome as soon as we arrived all staff were very friendly and nothing was to much trouble from the off and would definatley recomend this hotel to anyone.
Comfortable bed and a quiet room; I had a great night's sleep. The breakfast was good. There was only instant hot chocolate in the bedroom - I really fancied a cup of tea, but no tea bags or milk were in evidence. The bubble bath and the shampoo in the bathroom were strangely watery.
Rooms available at an earlier time than specified. Traditional breakfast was good.
Staff checking in were very helpful Staff checking out were rude and did not seem very friendly
staff where excellent nowhere to read comfortably in room
The actual room we stayed in apart from the shower room was fine. The food at breakfast was fine. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The shower room was not too good with tiles missing from the wall. Wall-paper peeling from the walls. No plug in the sink and the shower was leaking onto the floor. Fungal growth around the tiles.
Central, with a late night bar The necessity to be back before midnight! You could pick up and pay for an "after midnight" key, but you do not always plan to be back late!
convenient only the above
The service was excellent. The Young man on the reception seemed to do pretty much every role in the place, but provided a warm welcome . The hotel is very close to town and the main roads in and out of Monmouth Bath is very small and the noise from the front road can be very loud through the night
Conveniently placed for our overnight stay en route between the destinations of our short break. All the facilities we required were available at the hotel. Somewhat narrow stairs - on of the party had recently had a hip operation so mobility was affected.
I found the room very dull and definitely not worth the £65 per night price. However Monmouth is a Fantastic town. Shame the Hotel didn't live up to this standard.
Not too much. Room decor, bathroom, walkways, bar. Rubbish dumped in car park.
The only thing we liked about this hotel were the staff. They were freindly and helpful. Did not like the bed, we rolled to the edge and was worried about falling out in the night. Also very noisy at night with other guest talking in the passage and the kitchen moving bins around underneath our window.
friendly, helpful staff shabby decor and furnishings, noisy room
Efficient & friendly staff Getting to the restaurant involves going outside to another building
Hotel staff very helpful, location in the Forest of Dean The "restaurant" facilities within the golf club really let it down and not what we expected from a country hotel - no table clothes! effectively eating in the golf club bar. Food ok but not special. It needed to be in the main hotel
Friendly staff at reception. Good view out onto the bowling green. Nice walk round the golf course. Very easy access to the Wye Valley and Symonds Yat beauty spots. Easy to hear noise from other rooms.
Convenient for my work location in this instance with convenient on-line booking. Good, freshly made breakfast. No complaints
The room was excellent and the golf course was presented well. We were rather disappointed with the standard of food
As walkers we had everything we needed including food & drink in a lovely location, the distance to our walks was fairly close and the taxi transfer was easy and arranged by reception staff who also gave advice on our walks, it would be an ideal location for large groups to use as a base. I could not use the electric kettle in the room as there were no sockets in easy reach
Meals were good value Service at breakfast on final day was poor, it took nearly forty minutes to get breakfast. but to be fair to them they were fully booked.
the residents bar 10pm - 6am the beds were poor, the part of the hotel we stayed in was old and worn.
When I went to bed about 11.30 pm I found that my bed, in a twin, had a mattress that had springs broken and as a result had a very poor night's sleep. I reported the matter at Reception next morning and was assured that it would be changed without delay. In other respects the hotel was fine but this important aspect spoiled my stay.
The hotel was excellent with freindly approach and an excellent breakfast. The bed was not as comfortable as it might have been and squeaked
Hospitality was excellent. Lovely couple. Very courteous and helpful. Room was very clean and cosy. Beautiful garden to sit and eat. Parking on site. Could have benefited from more room i.e another table as I had to sterilise bottles for the baby in the bathroom but there is a lounge downstairs.
Very clean, comfortable and quiet. Owners friendly and happy to assist with any query, breakfast lovely. Pleasant atmosphere. WiFi helpful. Local pub ideal for evening meal.
Friendly and welcoming
Very comfortable. Excellent hosts. Breakfast was the best we have had in a very long time. Lovely area. Particualrly liked the fresh milk in the fridge and home made sausages were superb. None
The owners were so welcoming and friendly
free and easy, come and go as you please stopped during cold spell, central heating inadequate
Tourism activities suchas Go Ape in the Forest of Dean
Bed and Breakfast very good, Pat and Brian very nice people really relaxed and friendly atmosphere, would stay there again.
Was offered a free upgrade and made very welcome No
Owners very friendly and welcoming - excellent breakfast. Local information and maps readily available for visitors to the Forest of Dean and surrounding areas.
Staff professional and very pleasant. Food superb. I am a light sleeper, and unfortunatly I could clearly hear a very loud snorring next door which kept me awake most of the first night.
pleasant surroundings friendly staff good value for money bit quiet but this could be the time of year i was there
Make sure you request one of the rooms from the main hotel - or at least the better rooms outside in the carpark. The original room I was allocated was just bigger than the small double bed, and absolutely reaked of smoke. However, staff were very apologetic and immediately found us a fantastic room. Breakfast was great!
Position and history Untrained staff (albeit willing). Reviews not read see below
Largely helpful staff. Room not as requested. Decor is tired. Food very average.
Extremely pleasant and helpful staff. Excellent full English breakfast included in the price. Warm and comfortable room.
We were disappointed with the hotel facilities and rooms. The hotel is desperately in need of redecoration, and the room rates do not reflect this. We have recently stayed in B & Bs which have been far superior, at half the cost. On the plus side, the staff were attentive and friendly and the food at lunch dinner and breakfast was lovely The staff dealt with our complaint fairly but its a shame, the hotel has a lot of potential.
The staff were very helpful and friendly, despite being overworked because of the wedding that was being held at the hotel. When we complained that we had not had hot water all day, it was repaired within a very short time of us reporting it. Parts of the hotel were in need of refurbishment, especially one of the carpets on the ground floor which was very badly stained - and had a dish to catch the water from a leaking radiator. Also, because there wasa large wedding party staying at the hotel the stafff were very stretched and it was difficult to get a seat in the bar/lounge areas.
friendly reception and bar staff a surly restaurant staff person and forgotten orders for bar food two days running; shabby decor in room
All staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Food very good and comfortable public rooms. Free Wifi Lighting in rooms - rather dull. Bedside lights for both beds/sides needed, that will throw light on a book.
Staff responded very well to requests and resolving a problem re TV.Breakfast was very good. The weather! Evening meal was disappointing.
I enjoyed the meals and excellent service together with the tranquillity of the location. No complaints
Attractive, comfortable hotel. Staff friendly and efficient. breakfast very good. Only stayed one night but would have liked a longer stay!!
Our room smelt of cigarette smoke.
The staff are proffesional yet friendly
Lack of bar meal option at weekend and had to opt for the fine dining.
The building was full of charactor but at the same time beautifully maintained and very comfortable combining the old and the new. The staff were so friendly and helpful. We did not stay for dinner but would have liked to. The breakfasts were excellent. Nothing to report. Would go again.
The room. I stayed with my daughter and would have preferred two single beds.
Great location, very good staff, nice bed, nice pillows, good breakfast. Room was small with no proper windows, there was no fixed shower or wallmount so you could have a proper shower, the taps were wrong for the sink, there was only an expensive fixed 3 course menu available for dinner.
Staff were extremely friendly, courteous, efficient and professional
Excellent staff. Quiet location.
Just enjoyed our brief one-night stay
Individuality of hotel and its rooms/ The room was not cleaned correctly with screwed up sweet wrapper behind one bedside table, the kettle flamed when plugged in and the room was too noisy with the live music on the Friday night that we stayed there.
Free wi-fi services The room is not so clean
Hotel ha plenty of character and is clean and comfortable.
I did not enjoy it I did not like the fact that the lights in the corridor did not work. I was really put off that the bin in the bathroom was full of rubbish.
The hotel provided value for money. The breakfast could have been better. It is a good location for activities such as canoeing, cycling, walking.
Fair value for money, clear precise directions to room Room was dirty in places, don't like being addressed as mate by the staff, room facilities poor.
Hotel is central and staff are friendly and helpful. Room not as clean as it should be. Shower drain partially blocked and not cleared although we reported it.
charming old building and private guest entrance so no need to go through the bar room quite small and bathroom in need of an update
Plenty of character, very friendly staff and within easy reach of Cardiff and Gloucester. The shower (head) could have been cleaner.
location noise from live music and disco downstairs and no attached car park
Fantastic leisure pool. Amazing grounds - a haven of tranquility. Food was a little disappointing.
What was there not to like! The lodge we were in was perfectly clean with everything we needed. We only paid £75.00 for the evening for 2 adults and 2 children which was a lot cheaper than any of the hotels in the area. We had attended a very close family members funeral that day and it was so wonderful to go back to our lodge and properly relax in comfort and peace and quiet.
