9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very relaxing, nice Onsen that is easy to book privately, delicious Japanese food, spacious room. Hotel personnel will pick you up from the bus station (station name is Sawando, which google calls something else incorrectly). You will get a private dining room, and four out of eight total rooms come with a hot bath inside. Keep in mind that even though you have the hot bath, you won't have a shower in the room. You cannot use the hot bath to clean yourself. The only showers are the public ones, and one private that can be reserved. I initially found that to be inconvenient, but it really was not. Relaxation is about letting go of control! The bed is a Japanese futon, on the floor, but comfortable and warm even in the winter. They will put some kind of a hot-water filled feet warmer under the sheets, too.
Cons: Some amount of sake should have been included in the price of the dinner!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic traditional Japanese hospitality and beautiful food in an unusual location. Not for a second did they make us feel different or unwelcome due to our western/foreign background. We were here for 2 nights and was a highlight of our visit to Japan. A special thanks to Yuta Saitou for his patient help and support before and during our stay.
Cons: Very little not to like in this beautiful
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room is beautiful and comfortable. The staff is very helpful. I love to stay here.
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan is 5mins walk from Sawando bus stop, not big but super comfortable. I do like the hot spring and their lovely staffs. It’s a pity that I arrived one week before Kamikochi opened to public this spring. BTW, the starry sky view from the garden was really amazing.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: We stayed here for just one night. It's our accommodation on the way we travelling from Shirakawago to Fujikawaguchiko. Hence, it's a wonderful stay with a lovely and relaxing environment. It's the ryokan that surouding by snowy mountains and provided supreme retreat. Staffs are very friendly and helpful even they don't speak English. Breakfast and dinner are fantastic. The portions were just right, not too much not too less.
Cons: We didn't expect there is no shower area in the room. Our room include the outdoor onsen, it's nice but the weather was too cold for bathing outside :-) However the private onsen that the ryokan provided was wonderful, we just need to book the time.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Silence, calm atmosphere, lovely people, fantastic location , georgeus food and private onsen in room. Thank you for making my stay so special. Food was spectacular everything was in autumn theme. I have been travelling through Japan for three weeks and I missed milk so much, and here you are providing me with a bottle of delicious and fresh milk at 7:00 am...thank you very very much.
7.1 Good
Pros: In general the hotel is average; location is good for catching the bus at Sawando Bus Terminal for going to Kamikochi, it is less than 5 min walk.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: They picked us up from the bus stop and brought our bags inside for us. They spoke some good English and explained to us how everything worked. They're were also instructional books for how to use the different baths and what time they're available. We decided not to get dinner but they still provided us with good and drink. Breakfast was amazing.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Everything was wonderful. The decor is absolutely charming, and the place is quite new and very clean. Our room was huge with lots of amenities, and we slept very well on the futon. Both the outdoor and indoor baths were absolutely lovely after a day in Kamikochi, and we really enjoyed the yukatas and samue nightwear provided. The kaiseki meal and breakfast served in a private room was fantastic, and the service made us feel very special. We had an extremely comfortable, relaxing and luxurious stay.
Cons: The location is very convenient for Kamikochi, but the place is quite close to the road and next to a parking lot. It didn't really bother us, though! The ryokan is also slightly expensive but worth every yen.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The guesthouse is lovely and the staff were so welcoming. I stayed two nights and all the staff and other guests I met really elevated my experience staying here. Everything is spotless and small thoughtful touches make this place very comfortable.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The best hostel I got to stay in Japan so far. The guesthouse doesn't only look beautiful and cozy, you will also find everything you need - there is even lint rollers and hot-water bottles. The staff was super friendly, helpful and welcoming, the bar and lobby are really nice to stay. I stayed in the womens dormitory and the beds were really comfortable and there was space to store your luggage under the bed so even with my very large bag I had no problems. They also offer an inexpensive little breakfast! Would and will stay here again!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Staff so friendly. Place really close to Matsumoto castle.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was very affordable, and it was great to be able to hang out with the hosts and the other guests while I was there. The beds were very comfortable and the other guests made an effort to minimise noise etc. Everything was very clean and sanitary. The hostel had a very cosy feel. The hosts also spoke in slowly in Japanese so I could understand. The other guests were super friendly. We were only a 10 minute walk from the train and bus stations for our day trip.
Cons: Perhaps there could have been a few more options for the breakfast, like eggs or something filling.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Really great vibe! Staff are friendly, bunk beds are spacious, communal area is lovely, and a free drink on arrival! Large female only bathroom which was always spotless.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: friendly staff, great place, close to the castle... i had a great time ar the bar!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Really nice spot. Lovely little communal area and reception. The room was traditional Japanese and nice and comfortable. Staff were also very generous with their time and recommendations. Would highly recommend.
Cons: Parking fee was a bit of a surprise. And men's showers (or "shared" bathroom) is downstairs whilst women only is on 2nd floor.

Pros: great location right next to the castle, great kitchen, nice small hostel with big chance of people being considerate of each other, great information in the living room with tips on where to go, comfy common area for exchanging stories with fellow travellers, great english speaking host (take) , free bikes too ! Dorm room is 6 then there are three private rooms, one close to the kitchen with two single beds, there you can be unlucky if guests are noisy late at night or early morning ...
Cons: cant think of anything

9.2 Excellent
Pros: The owner is very kind, helpful, and generous especially the "mother". She prepared a very delicious vegetarian dinner for me. She offered to give me umbrella upon check out since I did not have one and the weather forecast was raining for whole day. I also like the spacious shared shower room with big spring water hot tub. It has a view of the forest if you open up the large window. The room is also nice and cozy with greenery view. I like the onsen discount voucher very much too. The little birds at the garden were so cheerful and joyful. The husband and son are also nice people. The "son" is helpful in providing sightseeing information and the "father" is clear in his explanation of the house rules.
Cons: It's perfect. It would be nice if it has in house onsen though.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very kind hosts, warm atmosphere and very helpful with everything, especially finding the perfect excursions within the region - it was wonderful, if we can we will come back!
8.3 Excellent
Cons: Very kind owner. He was very welcome and gave us detailed explaintion on Kamakuchi
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Sueko’s food was absolutely incredible and we highly recommend that anyone who stays here has breakfast and dinner in the property. Both hosts were absolutely first class and the property is in a beautiful place with lots of fantastic scenery and wonderful hiking. We cannot say enough good things about this place!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Hosts were great, food was awesome.
Cons: The single beds were not comfortable for people over 80kg.
7.0 Good
Pros: the food, and nature surrounding
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We felt right at home and the food was great. We rented a car and explored many local hikes. We appreciate the great care they have us. Really happy with our stay:) We we’re worried our kids (4&6) might be too much for the inn but they were very welcoming and it was so comfortable.

Pros: We have higly appreciated he kindness of the staff. The check-in and the check-out procedures were well organised The rooms and the dinner were really nice. We love the Onsen, free tea, coffee and sweet cakes. We were served as Queen and King. This ryokan is highly recommended.
Cons: It was perfect
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is nice with friendly staff. It is convenient to get to the town by bus.
Cons: Would be nicer if we could have choices for meals instead of being a set menu.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic staff and fantastic food
Cons: Everything was just perfect
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was such a lovely little inn. The staff are incredibly attentive, the meals are creative and beautiful, and the entire place is immaculately clean. I'd recommend it to anyone coming to Matsumoto.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: This beautiful traditional ryokan had superb kaiseki dinners and breakfasts each day. Rooms were immaculate with extra little touches like a complimentary supper treat left for us each evening. Staff were courteous and spoke enough English to assist us. Onsen was beautiful. Interiors of the rooms and public areas beautifully designed in traditional timbers. We were treated with utmost courtesy and loved our 4-night stay here. Highly recommend this ryokan to anyone who perhaps has never experienced this type of Japanese hospitality. And the food was the next level of master chef!
Cons: So hard to find anything to fault here. Location is a little bit out of central Matsumoto, but that makes this place such a retreat... a nearby local bus took us directly to Matsumoto Castle and Station, and a 10 minute taxi ride brought us back. We loved everything about this ryokan!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly and caring staff, superb delicious breakfast and dinner . Our family really enjoy the stay and would recommend friends and relatives to stay here whenever they visit Matsumoto . The most enjoyable stay in my visit to all places of Japan . 10 out of 10

Pros: Use of private onsen for free was a highlight. Otherwise, a clean and comfortable option with great food and evening entertainment.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: I love private onsen and hotel facilities. Staffs are very helpful and the room is clean.
Cons: Maybe good for traveling with car.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Our room is big with 2 washrooms and a bathroom. An added advantage when u are travelling in a group sharing a room. Meals included, food were great and at very reasonable cost.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was amazing, definitely worth taking the Japanese breakfast option. Best breakfast we had on our entire trip!
Cons: nothing I can think of
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Superb room with semi-open bath, was worth the money
Cons: a bit far away from the station. And you should really put yukata in the room (they are all downstairs)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing - the private onsen on the roof you can reserve was wonderful, and the service was exceptional. Excellent dinner and breakfast also, and the rooms are huge.
Cons: It’s a little bit out of the centre of town - there is a bus but just something to be aware of if a convenient location is your number 1 priority.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Traditional Decor. Comfortable futon. Great staff. Private Onsen.
Cons: Breakfast could be more varied.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The people were terrific: we felt very welcome. In our room, we liked the combination of comfortable hotel and traditional ryokan. We were very pleased to be offered free transportation both to the castle and to the station after checkout.
Cons: The fact that it is a taxi ride away from the station and castle was largely overcome by the free transportation mentioned. In the room itself, thicker towels would be an advantage.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was spacious with the view of the mountains and the staff were amazing - true Japanese hospitality. Every day, after making our bed both morning and night, they leave little Japanese sweets for us with green tea in the room. The private baths were so beautiful and everything was clean. The floor manager was one of the most attentive person we've ever met, helping us translate stuff and guided us around the ryokan - felt like a very personal experience.
Cons: The location is all right if you don't mind travelling a little to central Matsumoto. Otherwise, it might be an issue as there aren't a lot of dining options except for a Lawson.
Nakanoyu Onsen Ryokan - Matsumoto - Building
10
8.7 Excellent (476 reviews)
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing view and great staff!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff is very helpful and gave us a warm hospitality by providing detailed bus schedule and ensuring we got on the right bus. Excellent.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location. Onsen. Food. Service.
7.9 Good
Pros: Food was very traditional and very tasty
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great! We had made reservations for the 2.45pm shuttle bus and the ride up was comfortable and gave us great views of the mountains. Check in was efficient despite the high number of guests. They had allocated lounge seats at the lobby for our group of 5, with welcome drinks and snacks for us to nibble on while they checked us in. The bathing and onsen facilities were very clean and it was wonderful to have a soak in the outdoor onsen with the crisp autumn air. Dinner was very tasty, and breakfast was just as delicious. They also offer shuttle buses to Kamikochi and also back to Matsumoto - very convenient! For those who are concerned about wifi, it's mainly available at the lobby level and not so much in the rooms, but this is a minor issue when you're immersed in the breathtaking natural landscape of the Northern Japan Alps.
Cons: Slightly expensive but the entire experience is worth every yen.
7.0 Good
Pros: Great location to explore nearby region. The staff are fantastic, and will do anything to help. English a little limited so if this frustrates you not the place for you. The food was some of the best we had during our 2 week trip - and for two people who aren't too keen on fish it was perfect!
Cons: Very regimented time restraints for meals/bus leaving times etc. I can see why they do it but definitely not for everyone. Check out at 10am but shuttle only leaves at 12midday with little to do around there, not ideal. Overall the place is VERY tired and dirty - with a revamp though it could be perfect place to stay. Also, the futon mattress...SO uncomfortable!! Two worst nights sleep (no sleep) the whole trip, but easily rectified. Also very cold rooms, onset perfect to warm you up, but with a revamp and improved heating systems again, could be perfect due to staff, surroundings and food!!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: While a little difficult to reach (at the top of a mountain), it is less than three miles from the Japanese alps-kamacoshi national park. Unbelievable views even from the bedroom. Lots of good food, but traditional Japanese. Great baths, and wonderful staff.
Cons: The pillows were also traditional, and I don’t really love traditional Japanese breakfasts. But that is my fault, not theirs!

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Just a positive experience. The staff is a family who owns the location, and they are very welcoming and kind. They were very hospitable, and me and my traveling companion want to return soon and stay in this area again, because of how kind the staff was, how interesting and comfortable the location and surrounding wilderness were, and how we were able to get to many interesting places without too much of a difficult drive. Ice cream was also terrific. There is also an area where guests can talk and play music. It was very nice. Furthermore, breakfast was delicious, I would recommend you get it in addition to your stay.
Cons: At night, the drive can be a little scary and disorienting. So be sure to have your path picked out.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The host is very nice. Everything is very good just like at home. Delicious breakfast.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful location - our room had a view out on to the river at the back of the property. Incredibly lovely and helpful family hosting us. Nothing was too much trouble. Excellent breakfast. Washing machine and coin-operated drier available.
Cons: Nothing.

8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very efficient operational system: Check in with friendly staff, pay with vending machine in advance (avoiding having to wait in line to check out and pay later.) Room is sizable for Japan. Clean and newly decorated. Basic, but has everything you need. Excellent location. Within a 5 min walk to train station. Very close to supermarket. Best point: Has 24/7 diner right at the ground level. Food is not gourmet but not bad (like Denny's). Plus, it's very reasonably priced. (I paid $70 US a night in April.) This hotel is the best hidden gem in Matsumoto. I actually prefer it way more than Buena Vista, which is supposed to be the most "luxurious" business hotel in town.
Cons: No gym, but neither does Buena Vista.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Easy to find from the train station. Includes breakfast. Clean and comfortable. Would definitely stay there again.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful hotel, very helpful staff and a stone's throw away from Matsumoto Castle. The onsen was free to use and very nice. We stayed here for 1 night as a convenient location from which to visit the Kurobe Dam and Tateyama mountain, after which we travelled on to Kanazawa and Takayama.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Chose the hotel based mostly on location (which is fantastic) and was super impressed with the overall experience. The staff was very nice, the rooms were large and clean, WiFi was great and loved the overall atmosphere.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Service was excellent +++
7.1 Good
Pros: Location is nice and staffs were friendly. Have Onsen in the hotel.
Cons: The room is very old and need renovation.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The room is clean and spacious for a family of 4. Staffs are friendly and ready to welcome you upon arrival. The hotel is not near to the station but fret not, you can always catch the feeder bus. A short walking distance to Matsumoto Castle and there is plenty of delicious eatery nearby.
Cons: Absolutely nothing.
7.0 Good
Pros: Nice hotel in central Matsumoto, not far from the castle and Frog street. Quirky room with a Nespresso machine (nice!). One of the employees at the front desk is American, which helped. There is a cool gift shop on-site. Upon arrival you get a cup of green tea and an absolutely yummy apple cookie (apples are one of the local specialties). There is an eco-program if you don't want your room serviced every day.
Cons: The room felt a bit cramped and had no outside view, although it was a superior room. The on-site coffee shop serves a rather forgettable and very expensive (especially the very forgettable coffee) western breakfast - skip it and head to the cafes on Frog Street instead! While there is a public bath, it is not a "natural" bath and there is no outdoor pool - i.e. it is more like a jacuzzi.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The service was exceptional.
Cons: Could have a handrail for going into the common bath
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent service, beautiful lake location and great views of the lake, huge room, nice onsen
Cons: The hotel is a little dated, but the rooms are still nice
