One of the major cities of America's Midwest, Detroit is a historically important city known for being the centre of America's automotive industry and the birthplace of Motown. Filled with skyscrapers, the city is marked by a mix of the cosmopolitan downtown area and sprawling network of historic districts and neighbourhoods which offer a wide range of excellent shopping, restaurants, culture and events.
Excellent indoor attractions and continuous events mean Detroit holidays can be enjoyed at any time of the year, though late spring and summer's warm weather often make them the best times to visit, whilst those enjoying Detroit holidays during the winter months should be prepared for colder weather and snowfall. The city can be reached via the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, located 25 minutes from downtown Detroit by car or 75 minutes by public transport. As the city is spread over a large area, a car is useful to reach more remote points of interest, though visitors can walk or use the overhead rail "People Mover" to get around downtown. Detroit is in the Eastern Time Zone (GMT-5).
Detroit has many of the country's 'bests'; some of the best history, an impressive zoo, art museums, and many more excellent attractions. Every visitor should visit the Detroit Institute of Arts; go early and give yourself a few hours to explore the vast range of art. For a fun family outing try the Detroit Zoo, home to animals from all continents and the largest polar bear exhibit in North America. Elsewhere, a trip to see the Red Wings or Tigers play a game is a must; locals are fanatic about their teams and the atmosphere is electric. In the evening visit Greektown for some fantastic restaurants and a vibrant nightlife scene. Whether for a family vacation or singles trip, Detriot has something for everyone.
