Marmaris is a port town with its roots in ancient trade, its name derives from the old Turkish word for marble, as deposits around the area cemented its role in the Mediterranean trade. Two mountain ranges intersect here and have helped develop the stunning landscape that has proved popular with holidaymakers. An abundance of pine trees and long sandy beaches drove the tourist trade in the 1980's and now the once sleepy town is the centre of cuisine and nightlife on the Turkish Riviera.
The easiest way to get to Marmaris is to fly into Dalaman International Airport. With a number of all-inclusive package holidays offered in the region, it should be fairly easy to schedule an airport pick up with your hotel, however public transfers to and from the airport are popular and easy to arrange with transit time averaging around 90 minutes. Once you're there, you can rent a car and explore the region, or take minibuses, which are popular, cheap and easy. The best time for your Marmaris holidays is during May-October, when rainfall is at its lowest and the temperatures are nice and warm. The time zone is GMT+2.
With gorgeous beaches stretching along the coast, most holiday makers flock to the warm water for a myriad of activities. Swimming, diving and boating excursions are all popular and you'll find plenty on offer. A long beachfront walk full of cafes, restaurants and bars will also keep you occupied as you relax in the sun. On land, horse safaris, jeep safaris and day trips to Ephesus and Pamukkale are also quite popular. At night, though, is when your Marmaris holidays really come alive. Packed with clubs and bars, Marmaris offers dancing into the late hours. With so much to do, you'll often find yourself spoiled for choice on your Marmaris holidays.
