9.4 Excellent (58 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Hydrangea Inn in Eureka, you'll be within a 15-minute drive of Humboldt State University and Morris Graves Museum of Art. Free self parking is available onsite.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The hospitality was excellent! She gave us excellent recommendations. The bed was really comfortable.
Cons: I really liked the entire experience. No complaints.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I could’ve stayed talking to our host Renée for days! Not only did she provide us with the most exquisite little bungalow to stay in she was a fund of information, fun and insight into a vast array of subjects. Renée had masterminded every aspect of the interior of the bungalow in which we stayed. In fact, bungalow seems such an inadequate word to describe the little haven of luxury which she had created for us. The breakfast which she provided was a true delight. I relished every mouthful and the conversation we had whilst consuming it. Thank you so much Renée for a wonderful experience.
Cons: Absolutely nothing
7.5 Good
Pros: It is a comfortable B@B, clean and soaciousy
Cons: To know in advance it is a B&B rather than hotel. Also we were told breakfast had two serving times, one at 8:30 and one at 9:00 which is much more typical of a B&B rather than a hotel which offers breakfast on a continuous basis over two or three hours and where there is a buffet type choice
10.0 Excellent
Pros: comfy bed, well appointed, clean, beautiful setting, excellent host, full service housekeeping,
Cons: check in is only 4-6pm which is a limited window for travelers.
6.8 Good
Pros: The facilities were ok. Nice to have the use of the garden and chimera. Shower worked well, comfortable bed.
Cons: The room was just not big enough so nowhere to put 2 suitcases and the shower room was not that close to the bedroom. Too much crammed into a small area. Also the wood store was right outside the bedroom window so other guests could see in as they went for wood for the fire. Not a problem once I realised why they were there but a bit of a shock the first time it happened. We had what was called the bungalow. Better to have a room in the main house.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our family of five stayed here for two nights while visiting the Redwoods National Park area. The accommodations were immaculate, and the owner was simply wonderful. Breakfast was delicious and her recommendations for places to visit and eat while in the area were spot on. Fern Canyon was magical. Thank you!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Pleasant welcome, well equipped and very clean accommodation.
Cons: A little cramped, but otherwise all good. Parking in the street OK, but on site would be better.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Renee' was a wonderful host. Very accommodating and knowledgeable of the area. Her home is furnished in lovely antiques and very comfortable. We stayed in the upstairs apartment which included a kitchen, eating area, sitting area, separate bedroom and bath. She also has a beautifully landscaped backyard where you can sit and enjoy a glass of wine! Her breakfast was delicious which included baked apple pancake, ham and fruit. We will stay again!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Best night sleep in a long time. Most comfortable bed. Nicest owner. Great location and good restaurants. Clean and everything you could want. Had the bungaloo with full kitchen and towel warmer in the bath.

Pros: Liked it all!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Good location. Clean rooms with comfortable bed.
Cons: The breakfast. Nothing healthy to choose from.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I have stayed in many Holiday Inn Express locations around the country. This is absolutely the most beautiful hotel. When compared with others in the chain, there simply is no comparison. The lobby is gorgeous with an abundance of design details. Kind of takes your breath away as you enter the lobby. We are staying in an accessible room that is superb. I give this location a 10 on a scale of 1 to 5!!!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I wish all the HIE were like this. Brand new, remodeled and clean.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great, staff, breakfast and hotel and property was very very good.
Cons: Not a thing
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Clean and updated. Food closet in lobby for snacking great for kids. Breakfast better than expected.
Cons: Eureka. Not much of a city but this hotel made the stay one of the good parts of it. Lots of drifters and homeless in the area. Old Downtown had a faded glory feel to it mostly empty.
6.8 Good
Pros: The breakfast was good.
Cons: Very expensive for what you get.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Nicest Holiday Inn I ever stayed at!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: New and nice!
7.5 Good

Cons: No issues with this property.
6.8 Good
Pros: Great location, parking and environment.
Cons: The staff wasn't engaging. Example, my wife and I walked past the front desk on our way to the gym. There were 3 front desk personnel who did say hello or smile as we walked by. People add to the hotel experience. More
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great breakfast, great staff, great accommodation. Congratulations!

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff at check in were great and very helpful
Cons: Friends had been here and heightened our expectations too high. Were expecting to see ocean views
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Great centrally located hotel. It's located off the main highway and has a more secured feeling to the hotel and my car while parked overnight.
Cons: Lots of noise from the highway during the night.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very clean!
Cons: Toilet seat!
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was huge and has mirrors and counter space
Cons: The location and view although raised above the main thoroughfare was a little seedy. The view of the bay was obscured by industrial site.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: It's a beautiful room, very well cared for and exceptionally clean. You can tell the owners care about the facility and their guest. If I'm in the area again I will definitely stay here.
Cons: I knew when booking the hotel it had a view of the bay and was not on the beach but after spending the previous 6 nights on beaches having a bay view was not the same. The motel is really a wonderful place to stay its just not on the beach.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff was so friendly and welcoming. Room was spacious and sparkling clean. Every room has a view.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: rooms were big, quiet, and so very clean...staff was very nice as well
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Clean, beautiful rooms and a great staff
10.0 Excellent
Pros: really nice place, everything worked
Cons: na
6.5 Good
Cons: They pictures on the website made the hotel look yellow that’s why I went there
5.0 Okay
Cons: Getting to off highway. Compared to other places I have stayed during the last 4 weeks it it was very overpriced for the condition and location. Would not recommend.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was perfect for our family. We had 4 adults and 2 children. There were 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, a must have with children. The caretakers of the property were extremely nice and helped us get settled.
Carter House Inns - Eureka - Building
4
8.8 Excellent (394 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Carter House Inns in Eureka (Downtown), you'll be within a 15-minute drive of Humboldt State University and Carson Mansion. Featured amenities include express check-out, complimentary newspapers in the lobby, and dry cleaning/laundry services. Free self parking is available onsite.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: great location and breakfast. walking distance to a vibrant old town and great restaurants
Cons: The bed wasn't very comfortable
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was wonderful, but the dinner menu was limited. It felt more like a dinner that you would get on a cruise. Also, the meat and fish was underdone and after requesting them to cook more, the fish came back seared, but frozen in the middle. Not fresh. The breakfast made up for dinner.
Cons: The restaurant for dinner
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was great!
Cons: That my car was ransacked and things stolen. There were homeless lying on the sidewalk in many places.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast is divine. The dining room is sun filled, great views to the harbor and beyond. One of my favs! They have a very enjoyable lounge area in front of a fireplace where guests gather for wine and light appetizers in the late afternoon/evening. It is all so genteel and classy!
Cons: Since I was travelling for work, it would have been nice to have less stuff on the desk so I had more room to work. But not a big deal.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The cottage was clean and well equipped.
Cons: The service in the restaurant was a little slow. They seemed to be distracted and were not too attentive. Also, the food was good but the portions small. Simply put, it was overpriced.
5.8 Okay
Pros: The staff were friendly and helpful. The place was clean and had the softest towels.
Cons: To say they are in the historical district is a stretch, I technically it's at the end of it. While the basic room is nice, to get the rooms you see on the webpage thats a upgrade. The included breakfast is eggs and some kind of meat, with a selection of pastry. Anything else is a upgrade, even orange juice. None of the rooms have air conditioning, normally not a issue in Eureka, but we caught a heat wave. This is something to consider when picking a place during the summer months.
5.5 Okay
Pros: The welcome champagne was nice, and the bar
Cons: Paper thin walls, hair pressed linen, no water bottle
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were exceptional
Cons: No air conditioning was tough, we were there on hot days and it was miserable.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: I love the feel of the Carter house. I like that if we want we can have a cocktail in the bar and dinner in the restaurant without leaving the property. The staff has always been great and we love that so many local folks come in for happy hour. We have met some great people at happy hour!
Cons: This is something they cannot fix. The homeless situation in Eureka. Eureka is so charming I wish there was a way to infuse it with what those homeless folks need and to clean up the city. It has so much charm and history.
5.4 Okay
Cons: We am very displeased with our one night stay. The main reason that will cause us to not stay again is a person. The female blonde manager was so unwelcoming, cold, rude, short and unhelpful that she put a bad taste in my mouth. She had an blank bitchy look on her face as if she was doing you a favor just to acknowledge your presence. The man who worked the evening shift was quite the opposite - gracious, upbeat and welcoming. The female manager should get laid off - or not be allowed any interaction with the guests and he should be the face of the Carter House.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Lovely staff. Great breakfast. Safe neighborhood.
Cons: My room was very cold - the thermostat wasn’t working. I was offered blankets or a space heater, which is very kind, but I would have preferred a working thermostat. I stayed two nights and was surprised to see that my room wasn’t tidied up after the first night. It wasn’t necessary, but for the price paid, I would have expected that level of service.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was a great family place.
7.0 Good
Pros: The amenities such as breakfast, limo, and pools/ hot tub were amazing and beautiful. The staff kept everything stocked and were willing to help us through anything they could.
Cons: I didn't like that there was paper with my information on it like my room number and name where a tweaker got it and tried to take my room while my family and I were there.
8.0 Excellent
Cons: the soundproof of the room is horrible.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The room was clean and nice. We also liked the fitness center and the beautiful spa area outside. The included breakfast was ok but not more.
Cons: The WiFi was very slow and didn't work good.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely loved the "Oasis" pool area. Heated outdoor pool and the largest hot tub we have ever seen!
Cons: The neighborhood was very sketchy. Walked a few blocks to dinner before realizing it was a poor decision. Did not feel safe at all! Uber driver said he would not walk anywhere at night in that area!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, facilities, and staff. Loved the complimentary limo rides to dinner and back!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Hotel staff was very nice and helpful. This hotel was close to 101 and had a beautiful pool and hot tub.
Cons: Traffic was a little loud in the morning.
7.0 Good
Pros: The bed was comfortable
Cons: Noisy fridge and noisy aircon. Needs updating
7.0 Good
Pros: Place has been recently updated so rooms are modern, amenities like pool, lounge and gym are recent and not worn out. They did a good job with the renovation to make it as modern as possible. Like seven power outlets and two usb charge ports in the room.
Cons: Our room was across from the office on the ground floor. Very noisy from office and roadway traffic. In the renovation they could have installed sound absorbing curtains in the rooms close to the roadway. Then we had elephants upstairs auditioning for the Dumbo movie. Constant noise filtered through from them plus the traffic. Since you go to the place to sleep and it was noisy so sleep was poor. Hence the lower rating despite the amenities.
7.0 Good
Pros: Hot tube & swimming pool are nice
Cons: Location of this hotel is not optimal, outside the touristic area, in an hugly surrounding No bar in hotel
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a great experience in this place. Wonderful hot tub
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The pool area with huge beautiful spa and pool table and basketball hoop in the large pool. Also limousine ride to dinner.

Cons: The desk clerk was awful he had terrible manners his name is Connor I was crying by the time I checked Inn was driving on my way up from Sacramento I’ve been staying there for 10 years often on the only place I ever stay when I go to visit my family I was asking for early check in he was rude he was obnoxious he was talking over me he wouldn’t listen to me he would let me explain told me there’s no way you’re getting an early check-in is not gonna argue with me on the phone I need to learn to listen it was terrible I will never return to this property again I was in tears by the time I checked into my room
6.8 Good
Pros: Room was clean and adequate for a one night stay. Cleaning ladies and young woman managing breakfast area were pleasant.
Cons: I would have liked it to be closer to the charm of Old aTown. Reception desk staff were not warm and welcoming. I felt it was too expensive, not good value for the money. Breakfast was just okay.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was an excellent motel, clean, comfortable bed. It was on hwy 101, I didn’t hear any street noise where I was at the back of the motel. Parking was great and I appreciated breakfast!
Cons: The only problem I noted was the carpet in my room was sticky and damp. I suspect that someone is a little heavy handed with the rug cleaner. I bet if it was cleaned with copious amt of water it would not be sticky!

3.3 Mediocre
Pros: The kitchen staff were very friendly and helpful. They worked really hard to appease a variety of travelers.
Cons: I did not like the condition of my two rooms and the response I received from the front desk about the condition of the two rooms. The manager was not available and the front desk refused to give me the manager’s business card.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Good carpark, clean room. Staff is very nice
6.3 Good
Pros: The Koi pond and surrounding garden were very nice.
Cons: We were there three days and the elevator was not working. It had been out of service before we got there. So luggage etc had to be carried up several flights of stairs. There was no urgency to fix it. Breakfast was mediocre. Mostly unhealthy foods. The price was high considering all factors.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was really, really good. Lots of options. The room seemed clean aside from the smell. The staff was friendly.
Cons: Our room had a strange, sweaty odor to it. (May have just been our room from the people before us, but it wasn't pleasant. Seems odd to have this when it's a more expensive hotel.)
6.0 Good
Cons: hotel greet staff with the neck tatoo was about as unfriendly as you can get...a real turnoff. Main jucuzzi was out of order and had been for a long time. Overpriced.
7.0 Good
Pros: Room was clean and quiet. Hot tub enjoyable! Great Mexican food available within walking distatce.
Cons: Room was not ready when we arrived. We were very tired after traveling and had to wait in the lobby for almost an hour. No hot breakfast due to remodeling. Very disappointed as the breakfast was one reason we booked here.
5.5 Okay
Pros: The room is spacious. Staffs are friendly
8.3 Excellent
Pros: I was not thrilled with the breakfast. I liked it better when you made your own waffles and the hard boiled eggs were rubbery.
9.3 Excellent
Cons: WIFI didn’t work and the person at the front desk said she couldn’t help.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: One of the most comfortable beds I’ve slept in from a hotel. The breakfast was exceptional for being a free breakfast as well. Great location, not too loud but also close to stores and restaurants.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The room was quiet and clean. The inn is a block away from the Elk River Split a fish and wildlife preserve of Humboldt Bay. A walking, running, and biking path is adjacent to this waterway. Eureka Mall was just across the street and our room looked out on the parking lot. It was the weekend but not noisy.
Cons: High season pricing.
5.0 Okay
Pros: Clean, comfortable bed, The staff was accommodating when we asked for a rollout bed for our kids. They brought them right away.
Cons: Our room, room 147, did not have hot water the evening we checked in nor the following morning. I called the front desk that evening, they said they were fixing it, but the water never got hot. I called again in the morning, but nothing.

Overview Reviews

7.0 Good
Pros: Beautiful old hotel.
Cons: No air conditioning! Very warm in room but we asked for a fan and we did one from staff!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Enjoyed the wood work of an old house.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Charming old hotel. The lobby was really pretty and the pairings of all the famous people who stayed there were cool
Cons: The hotel is located in the downtown area and the location left a lot to be desired. They had a beautiful outdoor pool that wasn't heated and was 63 degrees at the end of July. Too cold for us to swim in.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is well situated on a hill in Eureka. The building is large and the furniture in the lobby is comfy and well placed around the fireplace and other areas with good configurations for conversations There is a bar/restaurant on the first floor. A good sized pool is outside and within the four walls of the building. There are many chairs and tables poolside. The room was clean and large with a comfy bed.
Cons: The Direct TV was malfunctioning in all rooms. ESPN, MTV, Cartoons and TNT were the only stations available. Also, the Wi-Fi was not working in the rooms farthest from the desk. I had to move rooms to check email and stream a movie since I didn’t want to do all that in the lobby. The bar/restaurant was dated as well as the menu. The bar was missing a few standard ingredients for drinks (ex. Manhattans). Breakfast was unimaginative. There was no coffee machine in the room.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The ambience and history of the hotel makes it a must see/stay. You just have to take in account it was built in 1922, and things were different in that time. But it is such a regal property, the few things modern hotels have that this one doesn't just fade away.
Cons: The bathroom was so small the door hits the toilet, and the sink was the smallest we have ever seem. And they could improve the breakfast to what you see at most places these days, but these are the only reasons I didn't mark everything excellent.
6.3 Good
Pros: The lobby and property overall are lovely, and the bar is great. We enjoyed some live blues with lots of people dancing. The location is good, just a short walk from the water and down town.
Cons: Although the decor is special, the practical issues make this hotel a bit worse than others. There is no air conditioning or good ventilation in the rooms. We asked at the front desk, and they quickly produced an electric fan, which did help. But the management of the hotel generally is just not that good. There was no soap in our room, and the sink had not been rinsed completely! And the paint on the bathroom door was peeling in a kind of gross way.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: My 14 year old daughter and I entered the empty hotel from a bygone era...the young women at the desk was almost ghostlike hereself. I noticed the old fashioned room key boxes on the wall with all the keys in place. I asked if anyone else was staying? 11 people she said. We didn’t see a soul. I giggled how it felt kind of ghostly to no response from the women. We went to the 3rd floor, empty hallway all the way to the back. Very creepy...same as the shining. We were nervous. We went out for the afternoon. Came back. Forgot something in the car. Came back to the room and the nightstand drawer was ajar. I didn’t want to scare my daughter. We went to bed. There was loud banging on the wall next to us. We thought oh good there are other people here. We left early in the morning. On our drive we started to talk and realized there wasn’t a guest room next to us. We called the front desk from the car and asked the gal if anyone was next to us lastnight? She said in her calm manner there was no one next to us. Also, when we left the room in the morning the doorknob lock was unlocked. Both locks need a key. They door knob is the key we were given. The second lock was still locked. The room can’t be completely secure. My daughter was up longer than I was. She said she had a sensation something dropped she looked around and saw nothing. Definitely a creepy place. Worth the experience. Sheets and bedding were very clean. Comfortable bed and pillows. No hot water, lukewarm, TV channels didn’t work. Pleasant staff. We read later about the place being haunted. We were clueless.
Cons: It felt like everyone left 50 years ago and the time is standing still. Very bizarre atmosphere.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very clean & comfortable! Loved the ambience & the history of the Inn!
Cons: Bathrooms are VERY small, but a great shower!
7.5 Good
Pros: Enjoyed our stay. The bed was comfortable for an older hotel. Lots of history in the decor.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The location in town was excellent. The history and decor were interesting and fun to engage with. The room was clean and comfortable and the staff were super helpful.
Cons: The food left much to be desired - the continental breakfast was alright, though a bit slim. We had dinner at the hotel and the gnocchi was good but the fish and chips were a bit soggy and the fries were cold. Thankfully there are tons of great places to eat nearby! The jacuzzi is still under remodel, but I'd love to come back when it's open.
6.0 Good
Pros: It's history
Cons: Bedside light no where to plug it to in No coffees facility in the room
5.5 Okay
Pros: Historical part of it
Cons: Only one trash can in the room, no hot tub, more tp, breakfast sucked.

Also the pool wasn’t working all day I had been telling my granddaughters they would be able to go swimming at the hotel. Luckily the man at the front desk gave us a room with a big bathtub so my granddaughters were able to play in the big soaking tub. Thank you for the soaking tub.

6.3 Good
Pros: Good choice of breakfast. Great location, helpful staff. Comfortable bed.
Cons: When we first arrived we got to the room and I noticed the balcony door was unlocked, lock was broken and due to staying a few nights I didn’t feel that our personal belongings would be safe, the room smelt of cannabis smoke. We complained and were given another room (helpful receptionist) although the lock on the second room wasn’t working well we managed to lock it but decided to leave it locked, meaning we couldn’t use the balcony. Breakfast room was small for the amount of people there, good choice of breakfast but isn’t “manned” by staff therefor tables aren’t clean and items run low meaning you have to call to get the receptionist up to sort it, unfair on them if they are dealing with a reception matter.

There was a locked doorway that was not totally sealed off so we could not tell what or who could be on the other side and might be able to peek through and see us.. There was no towel bar in the bathroom. Frayed blackout curtain. Other guests left their room doors open while they were using their bathroom. Sketcy neighborhood
