Taking a lyft to downtown saved me a lot of money vs renting at the airport, but the downtown facility is in an old building. It wasn't as clean (the building... hertz was cleaned and a step up... but getting to it you walk through some ugly)Reviewed 9 Apr 2024

There are not enough words in this space to explain my horrible and beyond frustrating experience renting a car in Cleveland (airport area) through Hertz. The rental process via Kayak was fine. However, if you ever have a problem with a service booked through Kayak, there is no help from Kayak. Period. This will also be the last time I use Kayak due to their lack of customer service. From the Hertz standpoint, I was told three times by the phone rep that I had to pick up my car at the airport location, which was not near where I thought I had to pick it up (downtown). He insisted. So I went to the airport location to get the car only to be told I had to go downtown. I told them the phone rep insisted I come to the airport even though I was willing, and thought I would go to the downtown location. They said they can't rent a car to me unless I paid a nearly $700 additional fee because I had prepaid for my rental. What does that have to do with anything? Then I was told that I couldn't pick up downtown because their office is in fact closed. I asked why Hertz allowed me to book from an office that wouldn't be open the day I needed to get the car, and confirmed to me it would be available. I was told "It happens all the time and we don't know why." A very long, frustrating time later, and after speaking with two local counter reps and two phone reps, I was able to rent the car from the airport location but told I had to return it to the downtown location and not at the airport. When I returned it to the downtown location as instructed, the first thing out of the counter rep's mouth was "why didn't you just return it at the airport, it would be easier, you can do that you know." He did accept the return at his office and was pleasant. The biggest problem I had was at pick up and return with the phone reps, both who did not have very good English and didn't listen to me, or understand me, and were not willing to assist. No one ever answered a local office number. When I asked to speak to a manager on the national customer service line I was told there is no manager on duty because it was a Saturday. Really? Doubtful. Counter reps push the problem to the national call center, and vice versa. There is also a very big difference in how they treat pre-paid clients with on the spot bookings. Anyway, it was a really horrible experience and never again will I rent from Hertz. They don't know their head from their tail, and have no desire to rectify the problem THEY created, not me.Reviewed 14 Oct 2022

I thought I was picking up at the airport location but it turns out it was about 30 mins away. Seems like it would be a simple fix but I was told that because I booked through a third-party that Hertz couldn't do anything. Also, the vehicle had a strong smoke odor on the interior...not cool when you're traveling with family and small children.Reviewed 3 Jan 2022

Improper maintenance and safety checks on my rental car ruined my trip and required me to make more expensive travel arrangements. I picked up the car about noon the day before a 700 mile one way drive. The car looked generally OK, but there was damage and evidence of windshield replacement which looked poorly done--lots of adhesive sealant residue on the windshield and even the driver's dashboard area. It wasn't raining so I didn't test the wipers or washer fluid, which was my mistake. The day of departure was rainy and I left when it was still dark. I turned the wipers on and they immediately made it almost impossible to see through the windshield, especially on the driver's side. I don't know if the wipers were old, or if the windshield had adhesive on it, or both, but the windshield went almost opaque-white, and it was especially bad when passing under street lights. I stopped at first opportunity and thoroughly cleaned the windshield and wipers, and that made enough of a difference to proceed with the trip once it got a bit brighter outside. Unfortunately, about 2 hours into the trip, on the highway, another problem manifested--the washer fluid motor didn't work. I couldn't tell if it worked earlier, when I tried using it in the rain. Semi trucks were passing and creating clouds of mist and road grime which obscured the windshield, and without washer fluid, the wipers just made things worse. Ultimately, I returned the car having lost many hours of travel time, so I had to purchase last minute airfare and buy luggage. Hertz did give me a voucher for the cost of the rental.Reviewed 30 Dec 2021

The location closed before we could pick up the rental. We were not notified. We were not compensated. We had to pay for travel for that evening.Reviewed 29 Dec 2021

Spent multiple hours at the location. I was the only person waiting to pickup my car. I had two small children in 30degree weather. First the front desk didn’t even know what level car she was looking for and literally ran around outside for 30min trying to see which cars had a third row. Then provided me a decent car, that was satisfactorily clean. Had me walk out to a locker and grab car seats. The kids car seats were absolutely disgusting and damp because they are stored outside not in climate control. I pack all our luggage (5 bags and children items) and install the car seats in freezing weather (we are from Florida). We finally make it to the exit gate ready to go (we have family dinner plans). The exit gate teller explains that the vehicle provided was incorrect and belonged to another location? Then forced us to reverse back out of the exit (now other cars waiting to leave) and return to the desk. Upon return we are offered an upgrade, silly me for thinking it would be because of our inconvenience. The teller then attempted to have me sign for almost double the cost. I immediately refused and expressed my frustration. The teller then hastily grabbed another car (I was shocked she knew exactly what to grab this time) and parked it behind our existing vehicle, shouted the keys are in it, and went back inside without a single apology. I moved over all the luggage and dirty car seats to a now dirty vehicle she likely grabbed from the return line. Exterior and interior were clearly just returned. We are now significantly late for our dinner plans and my children are freezing and upset, We leave this location now after spending most of our afternoon here that should have taken 30min at most. Corporate tells us that only the individual location can help us with pricing since the car seats should be burned and trashed and the situation we dealt with. Surprise surprise the location has no direct number and just redirects back to the call center. We are now back in Florida and will NEVER rent from Hertz at the CLE airport ever again.Reviewed 15 Dec 2021

Signage for drop off very much needed. Twisty roads and unmarked turn off’s we’re confusing and we had to double back twice to find the right gate.Reviewed 3 Nov 2021

Pros:When I first arrived at the rental counter at Cleveland/Hopkins airport, the clerk informed me my rental had been made at another Cleveland location miles away. When I asked if there was anything she could do to help me she imphaticaly said no. A supervisor happened to be there and came to my rescue. She was wonderful. The first clerk was not going to even try to help or ask the supervisor if anything could be done. To her, the mistake and inconvenience didn't matter. Once the supervisor helped things went well and quick. My return person was great!Cons:Perhaps train clerks in regards to customer service. They appear to have NO desire to help solve problems. Thank goodness for a competent supervisor!Reviewed 21 May 2021
