Give yourself time as the car rental agencies are way away from the airport and you have to shuttle to and from them.
Verified travelerJul 2026
Allow some extra time to rent a car in Cleveland. One must take a shuttle over to the rental center and it can get backed up/be slow.
DerekJul 2026
Make sure you inspect the car, and document any problems in their electronic system. They may try and charge you with causing the pre-existing problems.
Verified travelerAug 2025
Plan for extra fees to be included when you go to pick up the vehicle you Reserve. Also plan for them to jack up the prices if anything is going on special in the city.
MikeSept 2024
Book at least a month in advance or it gets VERY expensive.
Verified travelerJun 2024
Please note that the rental car facility for the Cleveland airport is 5 miles away!

Buying insurance at the rental car counter and prepare gas is with the peace of mind that comes with it.

It’s good driving in Cleveland. Recommend using wazes or Google maps as Apple Maps isn’t as reliable. Parking in downtown Cleveland and the suburbs can be tricky, so give yourself extra time for that.

Go to Enterprise in Lakewood. Don't try and rent a car in downtown Cleveland or from the airport.
AshokJul 2023
liked it extra time in returning should be on hourly basis
MelanieJul 2023
It takes a bit of time ride the free shuttle back and forth from the rental car facility to the airport terminal. Prepare for at least 15 minutes extra travel time.

Pick up and drop off a little far from the terminal. Give yourself extra time.

KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Cleveland

  • Cleveland is a fantastic working class American city, steeped in history and with a gritty authentic atmosphere. What lies beyond the downtown district, however, is truly magical: Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio’s Amish countryside, and the Cedar Point Amusement Park all lie within a short drive of Cleveland, making renting a car during your stay a fantastic idea. If you’re a cheese lover, make sure you also make the drive out to Heini’s Cheese Chalet in Millersburg and Broad Run Cheese & Swiss Heritage Winery in Sugarcreek, both located a little over an hour south of the downtown district.
  • Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is located 9 miles away from the center of town, and the drive will only take about 20 minutes. Explore the best available deals using KAYAK, with major hire companies such as Alamo, Enterprise, Avis, and Budget to choose from. The car hire facility at the airport is easily accessed via a free shuttle, which leaves regularly from the door outside Baggage Claim 7.
  • Some major highways in the state of Ohio operate as tollways, so it is best to familiarize yourself with which ones you drive on and the specific conditions of your hire agreement. The I-90, I-80, and I-76 Highways come together to make the Ohio Turnpike, a major tollway that connects Cleveland with Toledo to the west and Pittsburgh to the east.
  • Northeast Ohio is renowned for its snowfall, experiencing the heaviest months of downfall between December and March. During this period, it is particularly important to tune in to local weather reports and apply extra caution while driving on icy roads. The primary rule for snow driving is to provide additional space to the car in front of you, as braking distances increase due to icy roads.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire in Cleveland for £39 or less
  • Small hire cars in Cleveland are around 19% cheaper than other car types, on average

The car I received had been used by a smoker, even though all Hertz cars are supposed to be non-smoking. It was turned over to me with the front seat passenger's seatbelt wrapped around the headrest. The Hertz employee spent about three minutes trying to release the seatbelt, and then told me, "You will have to YouTube it." The passenger's seat could not be used. It took me about an hour and a half to free the seatbelt, including YouTube and other web research. Regarding the smell of smoking, I called Hertz after I arrived at my destination. They recorded my complaint, and suggested that I buy a container of spray deodorizer. This did not solve the problem. The day after I returned the car, I received an updated invoice, charging me $400 as a smoking fee. It took about an hour on the phone to get this charge removed, including the holding time and the many minutes necessary to get through the AI customer service preventer.

Hands-down the worst experience I've ever had with car rental. Booked the car in the morning from my hotel room. Took a $35 Uber ride over to the location. There's no one there. Sat around for 10 minutes until someone showed up, took my name and told me there are "no cars available". Even though I had literally just booked one an hour ago through the website. He said it would probably be at least a couple of hours before they got any cars. Suggested I try moving my reservation to the airport location instead. OK.... Could he do that for me? No -- apparently I have to call the 800 number. Call the number. Get stuck speaking to AI, which refuses to let me speak to a person, no matter what I do. Eventually the AI bot tells me I can't change my reservation because it's past the cutoff time. So I hang up. I then ask the guy at the desk if I can just cancel. He says, sure, but you have to call the 800 number, because he can't cancel for me. (Apparently Hertz has never heard of this thing called computers). So I call the 800 number again. I ask the AI bot to cancel the booking. It tells me that it can't because it's past the cutoff. Eventually get through to a person, who cancels it for me. Then have to take ANOTHER $35 Uber ride to the airport, to see if I can rent from another company. Total waste of an hour and a half of my time and a lot of my money.

It drove like n old vehicle I tried to change at the airport location since the downtown had close early. Thrvtrest ent I experir ce was horrible from an agent and Lala. She was unprofessional told me I had to wait.30 minutes. An hour sent by and she refuse to give me service. She kept bfudhing me off told me I was not platinum and get seek g everyone but ne. There are 2 other agrnts they told me I had to see her but she refuse to give md service. After back and forth another agent sas me and gave the exchange. It took over 2 hours to exchange a csr with no long line. This ssx a terrible experienceand I don't hnink I will ever rent from Hertz agsin . Just because I was not platinum I cold not get service? I had hold ststid which ghry claim hsd expired. So now we don't see individuals as customers? All shod be treated with dignity and respect. The Maplewood Cleveland airport was beyond horrible. We waited in line for over an hour... there was 1 customer service agent and about 30 people in line. We reserved an intermediate SUV but were given a compact SUV, then told the compact SUV was in the same category as the intermediate. The reason I reserved the intermediate SUV is because I need a blindspot indicator and that is something that has always come standard with an intermediate SUV. The compact SUV category does not have this. Anyway, I tried to get a different car and they refused. The customer service agents were unhelpful. I called Avis, who acquired Budget and they basically told me to get lost over the phone. It was a disappointing experience to say the least so I won't be renting from Budget/Avis again if I can help it.

Ten customers in line to rent the car only one person behind the desk with a very poor attitude. Took a very long time. No one in parking lot to help u find the car. Once we found it we couldn’t get the trunk open finally after we were there for awhile someone came and helped us. Returning the car was a total nightmare. A bunch of cars were stacked up like there was no one working to move them. We pulled in line and a car to the side of us was damaged so I left a space in front of me because I didn’t want to scratch our car. The attendant hollered at us three time at the top of his voice with a very demeaning attitude to pull the car up and we ditto it and he was very angry with us. Overall u r in the people business and your people failed u. Very low class and poor tone and didn’t want to be there.

You lied on Kayak. Dollar doesn’t rent Ford Transit Vans. Illegal and false advertising which cost us money and time.

When I arrived to the airport to pick up my car they added so many extra fees I couldn’t afford the vehicle I had reserved.

The total cost was to be $177. Had me sign in early but did not have car available online so I did not pick up car till Thursday 7:42 as one was NOT available at the promised noon. The return was supposed to be returned to Hertz. At this point I have been charged: $263 8/22; $350 on 8/22 and $422.98 on 8/25. Can you PLEASE reverse these charges to the agreed amount $177?

Until the rental car industry drastically shortens the time from the time one walks up to the rental counter until pickup of the vehicle, I for one will not be happy with the pickup procedure. The return was quick and excellent. I was not aware of understood the breakdown of the final bill.

The car is a hatchback, but does not have a rear wiper. It made it very dangerous driving when it was outside. Cannot see how the back. Also if Avis is gonna require people to return a rental at 70% charge and they should send it out at 100%. I only got 85% to start.

This car has major alignment issues and the tire pressure was off. It should have been properly serviced prior to pickup!
