Heritance Tea Factory - Nuwara Eliya - Building
1
8.9 Excellent (1,641 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Where else in the world can you stay in a converted tea factory, pluck your own tea and take it home with you as a souvenir? At 2km above sea level, the views over our lush green organic plantations as the sun mingles with the mist are truly unforgettable. Enjoy them as you tuck into high tea on the terrace or a delicious tea-themed menu in the restaurant. Welcome to Heritance Tea Factory, where the kettle is always on.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Best hotel I have ever stayed in , blending modern with traditional
Cons: Tea could be served a little warmer ,but I drink it boiling hot so just a personal preference
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Deep in the jungle, the road to this place, and generally Nuwara Ellia is a nightmare, the Hotel itself is about 10km from Nuwara in "junk" neigborhoods, the final 4km are detour in tea field on a bumpy road, 2m wide... Food is typical Sri Lankan, spicy and kind of "no taste" for Europeans...
Cons: The staff are a bit lofty/snooty, try to be nice, but somehow you didn't really feel welcome, and more like you are here for couple of days, we wait you go... We paid extra for Full board, and end up paying for late lunch, or any request of my kid, at this isolated location...
7.0 Good
Pros: view , atmosphere,room comfort,hotel staff
Cons: Only one key per room. Far away
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This place is just amazing, from the beautiful facilities to the staff friendliness. It was our mid-trip stop and it was just the perfect place to relax and get some energy. We went to the Spa, which was also very nice. I'd recommend doing the mini-tea factory tour. Food was great too!
5.4 Okay
Pros: Location was good. Few of the Staff were helpful.
Cons: Noisy old building. We could hear every step. No sound proofing. Bathroom require a bit more attention. Security check at the gate was terrible. Personally had a very bad experience. Especially with the cake I ordered for our 10th wedding anniversary. And the hotel management knows why!
6.7 Good
Pros: The tea tasting and processing experience was a lovely excursion and educational. We thoroughly enjoyed it and can recommend. The afternoon high tea was also excellent and very good value. The staff were all very helpful and accommodating.
Cons: Our one meal ordered from the menu was inedible but the staff dealt with our complaint in a manner which was acceptable to us. The hotel is a little bit run down in some areas and could do with a facelift.

6.0 Good
Pros: Its one of the best scenic views I have ever seen.
Cons: Rooms and areas needs to be more cleaned. Rooms should have at least fans because there is no AC. When the sun starts going down the sun light directly shines on to the rooms and it was quite warm.
1.0 Poor
Pros: ONLY THE VIEW which i can easily access 2 meters away from hotel
Cons: I asked for tissue box 3 times in a row with no respond. Food was bad in breakfast , obvious that it was presented from last day because its free.. room full of ants. Bath is not working. So in general the view was good thats it. I advise all people to stand near the hotel for 2 hours for the view ans leave intead of sitting in a room full of ants. No ac and it was hot. And room has no wifi and its written free wifi. Write next time that free wifi in lobby Area!!

Pros: This place was recommended to me prior to our stay. And I can see why! It is absolutely beautiful, comfortable with awesome staff! My family and I stayed there for 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it - from the wonderful gardens, view out to the surrounding land and mountains as well as the fantastic staff that looked after us in the restaurant. My 7 year old daughter even had a drawing personally created for her by one of the guys there..... I can thoroughly recommend this place to anyone looking for something cosy, clean and with colonial charm.

Cons: Nothing really.
7.0 Good
Pros: The view was awesome.
Cons: Wasn't that clean
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast buffet was very good selection i.e. English, Sri Lankan, European . Location was great, the heart of Nuwara Eliya is right over the hill and the hotel is basically in the middle of a rural farming community. Don’t miss the look out point that’s about a 3min walk up the hill, you can take in the whole valley.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The Hotel was great - it was luxurious and eco friendly at the same time. The buffet breakfast was great. We had dinner there a couple of times and it was good also. We asked for a cake for my child's birthday and the staff went over and above!
Cons: The 'hot water pool' is solar powered and therefore is not warm at all. Other than that, the place was great.

5.8 Okay
Pros: It was an old school colonial hotel. It was a break from the normal places so that was good.
Cons: The real elephant leg that was used as an umbrella stand. It should be burned, along with any reference to the a.hole that shot 1000 elephants.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Proper old school and quirky: rather a luxury boarding school. Great location and very comfortable rooms. Recommend making friends with Croos who is an excellent barman who now know how to make Springboks.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful large room. Very atmospheric and historic. Grand common rooms such as a reading room, billiards, bar, restaurants. To use the formal restaurant you had to wear smart dress ie jacket and tie for a man. Hot water bottles placed in beds at night. Roaring fire in lounge. Excellent service. Very good breakfast and dinner in restaurant.
Cons: A small refrigerator needed in the room. It is very expensive and you are paying quite a lot for an experience of the past.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Peaceful location, quiet and secluded garden. Close to town but isolated. A glimpse of a past colonial existence.
Cons: Great to have a dress code for a dining experience, and disappointing that other guests do not always comply with this code. Likewise, lack of respect and adherence to the no mobile devices at dinner policy.
5.4 Okay
Pros: Location in the heart of the town. The exterior of hotel and the garden , very charming ,old. British style. Breakfast was nice
Cons: The bed is horrible 100 year old, each movement I made it cause terrible noise. Mastress and pillows are horrible. I could not sleep. Zéro insonorision I heard everything, dogs ware barking all night long. The old wood floor makes too much noise . Go for takeing picture but don’t sleep there. All my body was hurt after sleeping in that room
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room and bathroom are clean and comfortable. Staff are friendly and attentive, food was delicious.
3.0 Mediocre
Pros: The fire in the fireplace was nice, and the staff was very obliging.
Cons: Such a shame to let such a lovely building go to rack and ruin. It is all so very dull, dark and a bit dirty around the edges.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: History and tradition are alive and well in this lovely old colonial retreat. The formal dining was fun and the staff were mot attentive and helpful.
Cons: I liked my double bed and hot water bottle but the space between the end of the bed and the fireplace was quite small. There were bigger rooms I noted but were probably allocated to couples. Such is life for the single traveller.

5.0 Okay
Pros: However, the staff was very welcoming and friendly. They made sure we have everything we need.
Cons: The room was quite basic, it was clearly made for a one night stay as it wasn't very cozy or comfortable. It was overpriced, maybe due to the location, but it obviously wasn't worth the money.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Close to the starting point of Adams Peak.
6.0 Good
Pros: Close to the Adams peak, they provide lunch bags if you wish. Clean rooms, and staff are helpful and nice, but should learn to tell customers when something cost extra.
Cons: Basic rooms. Bathroom with shower, but no shower curtain, so the whole room get soaked! But the price reflects the standard. Because of food allergies i could not eat the toast for breakfast. The waiter offered me some rice & curry that for me was a good alternative, but failed to inform me of the extra cost!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Next to the location, the fact that it is easy to connect with other travellers and the friendliness and hospitality it was great to be able to jump in the pool after coming back from the Sri Pada hike! Would definitely go again
Cons: Mattress and bedlinen was not that comfortable (but you will not be sleeping long anyways if you do the climb early morning)
5.0 Okay
Pros: The Location is good for them, who come for climbing to Adam´s Paek. There is no other reason to stay in this small place. The view from the balcony was nice.
Cons: There was no real bedding, just a synthetic sheet and no blanket duvet cover. It means, every gast covered directly by duvet. The restaurant was expensive.

Cons: Room temperature control
8.0 Excellent
Pros: We arrived in the evening and left the next morning on the train so we weren't there for any length of time, but we had a good stay. The bed was huge and the shower was very good. Mix of things available at breakfast, which was buffet-style.
6.3 Good
Pros: Staff were nice. Breakfast was good. The hotel design was fun. It’s near enough in the centre of town.
Cons: The noise!!! Wow, if someone is playing pool in the lobby you can hear every ball. If your neighbour turns on their bathroom light, (they left it on for a couple of hours) the extractor starts and then it hums so loudly that the tea cups start to vibrate! Our view was a concrete wall. They have no licence or refuse to sell alcohol, which was a little annoying.
7.9 Good
Pros: Centrally located , Friendly staff
Cons: Our room had basically no window, just a small one without any view, but a wall in front of it.

Pros: It was superb and staff was very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this place .
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly and helpful staff!
6.0 Good
Pros: The place is in a cute old house and my room was nice. It can get cold but they provide a space heater. Extra blankets would be nice! The location is excellent, walking distance from the town.
Cons: The staff didn't have the best English skills although they were very nice. I had a hard time communicating. I asked for recommendations of things to do and they couldn't answer. The food at the restaurant was just meh. They had me preorder my breakfast by selecting choices on a piece of paper but then they still didn't get it right. I didn't complain because I didn't think the waiter would understand me. I also noticed some drops of orange-yellow liquid on my toilet seat. Not sure if it was some sort of cleanser or urine. Again, I just cleaned it myself and didn't complain but...ew. For the price they charge, I think it's not worth it to stay here.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff very friendly and helpful . Lovely cups of tea and breakfast . Comfortable mattress .
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The manager Amal and the team at the villa were exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The villa is just a 10-minute drive from the center of Nuwara Eliya town, and the team at the villa were happy to arrange a tuk tuk (fees to be paid directly to the driver based on the hire) for us when required. Amal also personally accompanied us on a walk around the tea estate, which I thought was a lovely addition to our stay.
Cons: The bathrooms need to be updated - a fresh could of paint should be fine. Amal was happy to hear my feedback at the property, but I must say that the bathrooms were very clean, as was our room.
7.9 Good
Pros: Beautiful views over the tea fields. Helpful, friendly staff who arranged transport to Horton plains and also served us pots of tea on the balcony several times a day. Pleasant bath with reliable hot water.
Cons: It’s a few kilometres out of town without nearby options for dinner, so we ended up ordering home delivery. The villa is not sound proofed, so we were conscious of trying to stop our kids making a racquet and disturbing other guests.

6.3 Good
Pros: Friendly staff
Cons: The television was not supported usb. There was a delay in suppling food.
2.5 Mediocre
Pros: Nothing
Cons: Not worth for the money in facylitys and so far from the city they say the luxeary hotel staff and looks like trainers
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely setting on an old tea estate with a very “little England” feel. The accommodation is very beautiful, from the antique furnishings, rose landscaped gardens and onsite activities such as golf putting green, grass tennis courts and beautiful pool area. All the staff were so lovely and accommodating and went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. It’s a 30 min or so tuk tuk ride to Nuwara Eliya but it’s only around 15 minutes tuk tuk from main train station, overall tuk tuk is cheap and if you’re willing to do as the locals do, it’s on the main bus route into town. Would definitely recommend
Cons: Water pressure in the shower could be better but by far not the worst we’ve had in our travels
1.0 Poor
Cons: They had overbooked the hotel and didn’t have enough rooms so downgraded us. The rooms were not clean, someone’s hair was left in chunks by the bed.
2.0 Mediocre

9.6 Excellent
Pros: The homely feel, character and beautiful garden setting
Cons: We liked all aspects of the property
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Pretty and well cared for with attentive staff and nice food
Cons: Nothing

8.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was quite good. They wanted prior intimation for Sri Lankan food, which is fully understandable. The location is excellent, with easy access to all key places around; at the same time, it is generally quiet. The Grand Indian Restaurant and the Araliya Food Court are immediate neighbours! The garden is beautiful and well maintained.
Cons: The building badly needs maintenance, of course maintaining the old world charm. The bathrooms need a lot of improvement.
7.0 Good
Pros: Bed was good and comfy..
Cons: With high rate charge they should better to give breakfast even..for us they charge 11500 for one night. But didnt serve our breakfast..we came without bed tea even..they should provide breakfast with these type of high charge rooms..because in nuwaraeliya town area we couldn't find a good restaurant to take our breakfast...somehow we highly disappointed about that..

Pros: Good location.
Cons: The facility is too old.

Cons: We had planned the stay for a birthday celebration on Christmas Eve but it was very disappointing. The family room was really cold and uncomfortable. The space was adequate but dark and dingy. The service in the breakfast room was really bad and we felt sorry for the few overworked staff. The management should provide extra staff for the busy season.

Pros: Bernard and his staff were friendly, helpful and made our short stay so welcoming. The roaring fire in the dining room was lovely and Bernard even put hot water bottles into our beds! Alot of effort went into the dinner. Unfortunately we had a rather filling lunch so we couldn't fully do justice to dinner. But we will return as we enjoyed our stay so much.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Amazing hotel and old building. Chef Dinesh takes amazing care with his team and makes sure everything is alright. We really felt like at a family. Food also amazing and we even got breakfast at 5am before our departure to words end. Can only recommend this place.
Cons: Nothing at all only watch out that prepayment is stated at booking but they don’t charge in advance and you have to pay at check out
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staying at Fern cliff was like stepping back in time and staying with colonial friends. Behind secure gates, our taxi swung into the driveway pulling up in front of a covered porch which was just as well as it was pouring with rain. Bernard, the Manager, welcomed us with ginger tea and homemade biscuits in front of a roaring fire. Our room was huge and comfortable. The highlight was however dinner in the elegant dining room. Again in front of a roaring fire. A delicious choice of either western or Sri Lankan home cooked cuisine. Breakfast was similarly delicious. The perfect place to break your journey between Kandy and the highlands.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Whoever restored this heritage house deserves an award; the building is charmingly old world with all the perks of present day and an immaculate garden. The food was top notch as well. Ask for a surprise dessert!
Cons: The credit card reader was broken and I barely had enough cash to cover the slightly high prices. Also, none of the rooms were ready on time and we had to wait a while at check in.
