When we arrived at the hotel the girl at the reception told us that they had to cancel our reservation (already paid for). I give her credit for coming with us to a different hotel in the area and arranging for a room for us. The reason I booked Carmo Boutique was its location in the 'safe' side of Pelhourino. Although the hotel we ended up in wasn't bad, the location wasn't as good, so we spent the evening in the room, not brave enough to venture in the hood too late after dark. After reading other reviews on trip advisor, it seems that there is a good chance that Carmo Boutique will cancel your reservation. Also, their transfer fee of R$ 100 from the airport is overpriced: I got an offer from another hotel in the area for $R 90. The actual taxi fare, on the meter, is probably around $R 60.
Pros: Nothing - they cancelled the reservation (already paid for) when we got to the hotel.
Cons: The fact that the reservation was cancelled.

Pros: Very clean and right on the beach in the Barra neighborhood. Within easy walking distance of lots of shops, restaurants, the mall and a supermarket. We had a spectacular view of the beach and the lighthouse from our balcony. Breakfast each morning had a ton of options and was delicious. Staff really went above and beyond for customer service - one of our bags never made it to our destination and was stuck in the São Paulo airport, and staff helped us call the airlines multiple times to figure out the situation. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.
When you stay at this Barra hotel, you'll be right across from the beautiful stretch of beach between the Christ statue and the Farol da Barra lighthouse. Pros: The rooms and the breakfast were good and the lobby was very good (spacious and well maintained).
They had a viewing room for the World Cup games.
The view of the beach was good.
Cons: When I booked, the booking said Wifi was available everywhere and free. When I got there it wasn't free in the rooms (only in the lobby) but I was told that since I used Booking.com (via Kayak), it would be free. I had to go every night and have them give me access to wifi in the room (instead of providing it for my 5 days in one shot). They tried to charge me for it at the end of the stay but I didn't pay for it writing a note explaining that my booking confirmation stated it was for free.
The location was not too safe at night.
