Top tips for hiring a car at Monterey Regional airport

  • Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) offers both commercial and general airline travel. From the airport, you can get to downtown Monterey and the surrounding Salinas communities by bus or taxi. The bus will get you to downtown Monterey in about 10 minutes. From the main station, however, you'll have to switch buses to go to other destinations. The taxi is another option but there is an airport surcharge both ways which makes this form of travel less cost-effective. If you rent a car at the airport, you can start sightseeing around the Monterey Bay area immediately.
  • The rental car counters are conveniently located in the main terminal on the first floor of the Monterey Regional Airport. They are close together and right next to baggage claim. The rental car lot is adjacent to and within walking distance of the terminal making it easy to get to your rental car. The car rental desks at Monterey Regional Airport are open when most flights arrive. That is from about 8 am to 10:30 pm.
  • Use KAYAK to find a great deal for car rentals at Monterey Regional Airport. You can use the search feature to find the perfect car for your budget. Rental car agencies with offices at this location include Avis, Alamo, Hertz, Enterprise, Budget, and National. You can also upgrade your car rental contract with add-ons like GPS, Toll Pass, roadside assistance, and refueling service.
  • Do you have special needs? The Monterey Regional Airport offers an array of amenities for disabled travelers. For example, if you need wheelchair assistance getting from your gate to the car rental center, you should make this arrangement with your airline. Passengers with special needs can also benefit from the airport's handicap-accessible restrooms and elevators to take you from one level of the airport to another.
  • Book your car hire at Monterey Regional airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

  • How can I pay for my car rental at Monterey Regional Airport?

The most common form of payment requested for car rentals at this location is a major credit card. This includes cards from American Express, MasterCard, Visa, Diner's Club, or Discover. Although some rental car agencies accept debit cards, you might only be able to use them at the end of your contract. In some other cases, you can use a debit card, however, you might be limited to renting a certain size or type of car. Other restrictions might also apply.

  • What documentation do I need for a car rental at Monterey Regional Airport?

For starters, you'll need to show a valid driver's license in order to rent a car at Monterey Regional Airport. If you're a foreign driver, an international driver's license might be required. You must also present the credit card that you used to book your reservation through KAYAK. The rental car agent might also ask you to show your return flight ticket or another form of identification such as a military id.

  • Can I pick up or return my rental car during off hours?

The Monterey Regional Airport closes at midnight and reopens at 4 am. However, the staff at the car rental agencies will not come in until a few hours later. If your flight lands at MRY at 6 am, you might need to make arrangements for an early pickup. Some car rental agencies will let you pick up your rental car outside of their standard business hours. However, you will have to make arrangements with the car rental agency for this service. Being at the Monterey Regional Airport makes it easy to return your rental car when the agency is closed. To return your rental car, you can park it in the rental car lot and return your keys to the car rental return counter dropbox.

We paid for a Honda Accord or similar, and when we arrived, we were told we were to get a Corolla. Not a "similar" vehicle. When pressed, we were offered a Nissan Altima. Again, not a reasonable comparison. We should have been offered an "upgrade" to a full-size or, at very least, something more premium. Anyway, the staff were nice.

Car was damaged at pickup. Tried to report to agent at counter but they disappeared to wash a car. Tried calling customer service number on receipt but they said they could only manage reservations. Tried emailing customer service with images of the damage and never heard back.

When I got into the vehicle, the windshield and every window of the car were covered with water on the inside. The windows were all closed, so it seems like someone may have cleaned off the entire inside and not dried any of it. I had to wipe everything down with some spare clothes, then blast the heat until the windshield finished drying off. It took ages and I ended up with some wet clothes. Was completely unacceptable.

I made the reservation through Kayak, they called me 1 hour before the pick up time and told me they don’t have the car. The person I talked to was very rude, refused to let me talk to his manager, refused to tell me his full name, and at the end told me his is not going to do anything for me.
