Monterey is a central, Californian costal city at the southern tip of Monterey Bay. The bay contains many conservation areas and sanctuaries. Sand dunes and forests surround historic Monterey. The American flag was first raised in California in Monterey and it was also the site of many other firsts in the state including the first theatre, newspaper, public library and school.

Monterey's proximity to the Pacific Ocean creates a cool summer Mediterranean climate. The ideal time for a Monterey holiday is between May and September when there is little to no precipitation and the temperate is pleasant. The nearest international airport is two hours north in San Francisco. Monterey is connected to nearby cities by coach, rail, flights and highways. A trolley bus runs through the downtown area during the summer. Monterey is in the Pacific timezone (GMT-8:00).

Follow the Path of History's sidewalk plaques through Monterey State Historic Park or Old Monterey, where all the city's historical buildings are located. The oldest of these is the Custom House. It once collected taxes from goods that passed through the port, now it houses the Maritime Museum that features Monterey's fishing history. Native marine species including jellyfish, stingrays and sea otters can be viewed at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Shops, open air dining and sea lions are found at Fisherman's Wharf. From here one can join a fishing trip, sailboat ride or whale watching tour or simply enjoy the nearby beaches, parks and bike paths.Cannery Row is lined with tasting rooms from the vineyards that surround Monterey. At night visit the many bars and pubs on Alvardo Street. Each September Monterey hosts the longest running jazz festival in the country.
