Pros: Quiet, nice atmosphere. Check in was top rate. Gave us full details of the amenities and timings and helped with the luggage and checked that the room met our expectations. Photo is the view from our room
Cons: Dinner was served in the bar but as there was a full house it was rather cramped and offered no privacy.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent restaurant. Great quality food, great service. The room was very comfortable. The staff and team are really friendly and approachable. I would definitely stay there again.
Cons: Be aware that because it is an old building there aren't many power sockets in the bedroom.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was in a beautiful location on the edge of a loch so the views from our room were lovely. We were lucky enough to have a beautiful sunny afternoon so we enjoyed pre dinner drinks sitting outside on the loch’s edge watching the sunset. We had one of the best meals in five weeks of travelling in Scotland...their hand dived scallops were truly delicious! Not the flashiest of hotels we stayed in, but it had a lot of charm with happy, friendly staff, great food...all made for a memorable stay.
Cons: Rooms and bathrooms aren’t the most modern, but didn’t detract from our stay.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, friendly helpful staff, Evening meal was very good. Would stay certainly again.
Cons: Only small niggle was that breakfast was ok, but considering you had to pre order and the high standard of other meals it was a little underwhelming. Maybe being rather to critical.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Welcoming at midnight as I’d just got off the ferry and service bus stopped right outside. Simple, relaxing bedroom with comprehensive hospitality tray. Excellent choice at breakfast, looked after my luggage while I had a day exploring, before moving on.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was low-season, so nice and quiet. I was upgraded on arrival, very nice. I enjoyed the full breakfast option. A good place to stay, on the water and a 1 minute walk to the High Street. Kirkwall is easy to navigate on foot and by car. Close to so many historic and other places of interest (such as distilleries). On my last day at the hotel I had to depart before breakfast service, so the hotel fixed me a little take-away bag and dropped it off at my door, nice touch.

Overview Reviews
With a stay at The Orkney Hotel in Kirkwall, you'll be within a 5-minute walk of Mainland and Orkney Museum. Featured amenities include luggage storage and laundry facilities. Free self parking is available onsite.
6.7 Good
Pros: Staff were welcoming and helpful. Hotel is handily located in the centre of Kirkwall. Wonderful selection of whiskies in the bar with a knowledgeable barman. Kirkwall itself is a total joy.
Cons: Room had a rather quirky layout and felt like a corridor that had been turned into a room. Breakfasts were ok if a little greasy. Hotel feels a bit tired and in need of some cosmetic upgrading in the public areas.
7.5 Good
Pros: The staff were great - welcoming, helpful and friendly - I thought they were great. I only had breakfast, but it was lovely - the scrambled eggs were heavenly!
Cons: The hotel itself is a bit tired ... the room was okay but hadn’t been decorated or refurbished in years. But it was clean and warm. Given how busy this hotel is, it’s time the owners invested in an upgrade. Could take a lesson from The Ayre Hotel in Kirkwall - an old, traditional hotel with beautiful rooms.
7.0 Good
Pros: room OK, location good
Cons: breakfast one day very slow but food OK, evening meal not good didn't eat there again.
10.0 Excellent

Pros: Abliging, friendly manner.. Some of the hotel features.
Cons: Poor service at breakfast, remote car park, limited spots. Kettle did not work in room, one towel provided between two. Remote control on tv did not work.... Electric lights went out first day. Was moved to another room. Don't believe value for money.... Lots of stairs so not good for elderly or disabled. Wifi kept cutting in and out....
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Good central location, food in restaurant very good. Nice large room. Lovely atmosphere.
Cons: Only stairs to room no lifts and car park initially difficult to find. Also narrow lane and stairs from car park to hotel. Shower pressure low.
Overview Reviews
The Ferry Inn and Royal Hotel Stromness is centrally located in Stromness, a 2-minute walk from Piers Art Centre and 10 minutes by foot from Stromness Museum. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. Self parking (subject to charges) is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Upon booking, the staff from the Ferry Inn informed us that they would be closed for winter refurbishment and that we would be staying at their sister hotel located just 2 minutes walk away. Our stay at the Royal Stromness Hotel was absolutely perfect. Our family room was very big, with two separate bedrooms. It was impeccably clean, well-furnished and incredibly comfortable. The staff were from the Ferry Inn and they couldn’t have treated us better. When we arrived in Stromness the weather was exceptionally bad so we had to cancel the plans that we had originally made. They helped us make alternative plans and arranged for their regular summer tour guide to take us to some locations around the island so that we could make the most of our first day. Also because of the weather, we ended up spending a lot of time at the hotel pub, which is really friendly and cozy, and enjoyed exceptionally good food with some thoughtful and unusual options on the menu, including amazing vegetarian options, which we were afraid would be difficult to find. The breakfast was also amazing. We truly enjoyed our stay and are looking forward to visiting again soon.
Cons: There was nothing at all that we didn’t like, everything was absolutely great.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was superb, location great, staff were outstanding, really friendly and helpful. Food in the restaurant in the evening was very good too.
Cons: Beds were fairly comfortable, but headboards a bit loose and banged against the wall. The room had all we needed but was a bit small for twin beds
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Great place , food and staff
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely location. Room was a good size and well decorated. Bar and restaurant were good and breakfast was spot on.
Cons: Banging doors downstairs started at 05:50. I tried to find someone to suggest that staff (who I assume were making the noise) should try and be a bit quieter but had to leave before I got the chance.
8.5 Excellent
Pros: The location is great. Very helpful staffs. Nice bar. Good meals.
Cons: The bathroom was not en suite. The bed was too close to the door. Fire door in the corridor slams.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. This was my first stay at the Royal. (The Ferry Inn being closed for the winter). All good, thank you very much.
Cons: Nothing.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: We LOVED our stay at the Aviedale! Perfect for solo travellers or couples. It is so cosy and surrounded by beautiful landscape. The place is spotless and has everything you need from extra towels and kitchenware. The bed is super comfortable too. It was very easy to get to using the coordinates that were provided- thank you! Super hosts! We look forward to returning.
7.9 Good
Pros: Extras inside, like washer and dryer
Cons: Needed a comfortable chair or two
4.0 Okay
Pros: The breakfast was a complete fiction. The guest guide listed a wide range of breakfast food provided and included in the cost but NONE was provided. Only 2 coffee capsules on arrival.A bottle of red wine and additional coffee capsules were provided on 2nd day. We had to buy loo rolls as only one provided. Only 2 sheets of kitchen roll and no tea towels provided. No bin liners until 2nd day. Radiators controlled in adjacent property never came on so were cold and could only dry wet clothing using tumble dryer. Electric fan heater said to be in wardrobe not provided. Heating in kitchen using bizarre heated mirror...impossible to control and pretty useless even when on. Fridge so tiny that could hardly store anything and totally unsuitable for self-catering. Cooking facilities inappropriate for self-catering...only one hob portable induction hob. WC seat wouldn't stay up. Shower drain partially blocked so flooded when used
Cons: This is a fairly remote location which is good in some respects but makes it imperative that the unit is properly equipped for self-catering. This unit was manifestly not. Its a longish drive to the nearest supermarket in Kirkwall and so one wants to stock up but the fridge is so minuscule that it is impossible to store perishable items other than in tiny quantities. Cooking facilities are poor...a one place induction hob and a manky microwave which we didn't like to use.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Clean and comfy, nice touches (maps and leaflets, bathroom products, tea bags etc) really comfy bed, AMAZING view and garden. Super easy check in and out too.
Cons: Everything was lovely although couldn't for the life of me get the coffee to work.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We had a great time at the Aviedale Suite. It was exactly what we were expecting but more comfortable. All the facilities worked well and we were able to be completely self-sustainable. In the morning the views over the bay were lovely and it was a fairly short drive to all the locations we wanted to go to during our stay in Orkney.
Cons: Overall we had a great time although if we didn't have the car it would have been very difficult to stay here as there are no shops or restaurants nearby. If I was to nitpick, we brought some coffee to make in the morning but there as only a capsule machine, however about 8 capsules were provided at the start and this did us for the first few days.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Very clean, very comfortable bedroom.
Cons: A small welcome pack( e.g.milk ) would have been good as there were no shops close by.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything
Cons: Nothing
6.7 Good
Pros: Nice quiet location
Cons: Hot water controlled from main cottage - not good when they turn it off. Under the bed is not very clean. Could do with a dustpan and brush for spillages
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great communication and great facikities

4.0 Okay
Cons: there was no wifi, apparently it has been a problem for several weeks. the room was tiny, i put bags on the floor and there was no space to walk about, i would have had to fold my cat up to swing it...
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Great value for money with very friendly staff
Cons: The double bed being 2 singles pushed together with over lapping headboards was the only issue
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Such a lovely hotel, but it was the staff that made it! So helpful, polite, friendly, gladly helped us with any queries, and absolutely delicious food, yummy breakfast, they even made me a delicious vegan packed lunch for me as I was leaving early in the morning. Would definitely recommend and visit again!
Cons: There wasn't anything I'd improve. Everything was great!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff gave a very warm welcome, and were very pleasant to chat with.
Cons: Nothing of note. I was very happy with the hotel
8.8 Excellent
Pros: My friend accidentally left her jacket in the lounge bar but had not realised until the following morning. The staff went above and beyond to find it for her.
Cons: There was a bit of noise from the bar below the room but it did not go on late.
5.0 Okay
Pros: The hotel is right opposite the ferry terminal for the islands, and it had a nice en-suite bathroom.
Cons: The room was dark and dingy. All of the milk supplied with the tea and coffee was off - and there wasn't enough teas or coffees left to make ourselves a second cup when we discovered this. We had an early ferry to catch, so we skipped breakfast, but since this was extra and more than we'd usually pay for an evening meal, we didn't feel that we'd lost out particularly.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly efficient and helpful staff, I could not fault the St Ola, excellent hotel.

Cons: Bathroom was a bit basic
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly family run business.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Very modern rooms, each bunk bed with a USB port for charging stuff. This is the nicest hostel I have stayed at all week, not that the others weren’t nice, but this one has everything and uses the space in a dorm room very well!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: I was very happy with my stay here. I'd stayed somewhere nearby that was three times as expensive a few days earlier and it had been tiny, with poor wifi and very noisy. My single, private room here was clean, spacious, comfortable and quiet. I loved it and have already recommended it to friends.

Pros: Staff was quick to resolve any problems.
Cons: Single room was double booked. Unable to use Bike Shed: locked. Needed to leave Bike outdoors not secured to railings etc
8.3 Excellent
Pros: It was very quiet and the bed was comfy
Cons: It was a bit smelly in the corridors and the key would get stuck in the lock, make it harder to be quiet trying to get in and out the room
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location is great - it's a short walk into the center of town and to the bus station.
5.4 Okay
Pros: The staff were very lovely. Some very lovely guests too. Many of whom were in the same state of shock as I at the place! Sorry! Love YHA but this hostel is desperately in need of TLC and a little bit of personality. Great value but take extra blankets. Parking.
Cons: No heating on the night we stayed No warning that hot water takes forever to warm up Uncomfortable bed - springs poking us! Room smelt like men’s urinal plus detoll to cover it up! Broken toilets - some very malodorous No toilet roll/soap One of those places where you don’t want to touch door handles or walk barefoot!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staff are nice and very helpful. I love their huge kitchen. There are so many kitchenware for the guests and large space for storage. Of course, the hostel is very clean. They have two washing machines and two dryers. The guests can use them between 1700-0800 because the laundry room is far away from the rooms!
Cons: I stayed 5 nights in this hostel. The location is not bad but you have to walk from the tourist office or Tesco. I suggest you can take off the bus at Tesco and buy some food before going back the hostel. Because of the weather, there was some problem of WiFi signals. Although there are some disadvantage, I still love this place. :-D
7.5 Good
Pros: Absolutely good price for its value. Really nice staff! Good location for exploring the city and island. Very quiet and warm. I would come again!
Cons: very old carpets! no breakfast available because it was out of season.
7.9 Good
Pros: I have booked a 14 bed room but when I came it was 2 bed room, witch was great. Bed was very comfortable and clean. Room was also very clean.
Cons: I sent two messages through booking and one by email, no one replied. I had urgent question because check in was until 22 and I came at 23:50. Nobody was there but I have found an envelope with my name on it. It would just be nicer if I had some info before arriving :)

Pros: We received a warm, friendly reception from the lovely family that runs this B&B. They took the time to help us plan our site seeing while on Orkney. Immaculately clean rooms and sparkling bathrooms. There was even a den for us to share time with our traveling friends. A cold breakfast was available with hot breakfast individually ordered! We would return to this place again.
Cons: That we didn't schedule at least one more day there.
