Pros: Been to Haydens lots of times now and one thing I will say is they are consistent with everything, staff have been there a long time always greet with a smile and nothing is too much trouble. The complimentary cake (I had coffee & walnut & my husband had carrot cake) all made in house is such a lovely touch. The breakfast is fantastic and quite substantial. The rooms are immaculately clean. It’s the only place we will stay when visiting Rye.

Pros: The room interior is amazing, the location is quiet and the bed is solid and comfy :) . Me and my gf travel through the England for a week, I've been upgraded twice - but this has been the best place. Great breakfast too (english breakfast + benedict eggs).

The Mermaid Inn - Rye - Outdoor view
3
9.0 Excellent (1,441 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at The Mermaid Inn in Rye, you'll be within a 10-minute drive of Camber Sands and Lamb House. Featured amenities include complimentary newspapers in the lobby, dry cleaning/laundry services, and a 24-hour front desk. This hotel has 2 meeting rooms available for events. Free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Having stayed at the Mermaid many times before it did not disappoint. The room was comfortable and very well appointed, all comforts provided. The ambiance of the entire hotel is unbeatable and the food absolutely first rate. With efficient, polite and friendly staff what s not to like ?
Cons: There was not a single thing I did not like. Although it has many staircases, all have sensible handrails. Perhaps the one thing I did miss on this occasion was a ghost although on a previous visit I did indeed hear ghostly footsteps cross the room TWICE !
9.0 Excellent
Cons: This was suppose to be a dog friendly hotel but we were only allowed to have the dog in our room. The bar was small so I could understand the dog not being allowed in there, however, not to be allowed in the two lounges was absurd. We had to keep going out to find other bars which allowed dogs! This really spoilt the stay in the Mermaid as we paid a lot of money for the hotel which we couldn’t spend the time in there! I suggest that the hotel does not advertise themselves as a ‘dog friendly’ hotel.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was lovely.
Cons: It was all good.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel was just stunning. We loved the quaint feel and the multiple relaxation areas. The board games and papers are also a lovely touch - we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Cons: Reception area staff were not overly welcoming or attentive on some occasions. General waiting staff were lovely - although order taking for breakfast and roast was a little slow, but food did arrive quite quickly.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I think I had the best battered cod and chips for dinner I've ever tasted - it was really superb, and I ate it in the cosy lounge. I loved the feel of the place, with its fireplaces and wooden beams, and the history of it. How cool to be able to stay in an inn that has secret smuggler passageways etc. It was also located just around the corner from the Kino cinema, the picture perfect church and also Henry James' house. The breakfast was amazing too - I had the cinnamon toast, which was delicious, and I'm sure the full English would have been amazing too.
Cons: I had a really good time, but the reception staff could've been friendlier. I also didn't manage to get a seat in the bar as it was always busy, but I just needed to be quicker off the mark. The bartenders were friendly and helpful.

7.5 Good
Pros: Lovely design
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was lovely - seemed that all produce was sourced locally which I loved. Unfortunately a lot of the food they had available, I wasn't able to eat. This was partly my fault though as I didn't make the hotel aware of my dietary requirements beforehand. The reception/lounge area had a lovely atmosphere, my partner and I sat by the log fire for hours playing various games.
Cons: It's a shame the spa treatments were so expensive - would have loved a massage but prices were too high! There were no tea/coffee facilities in our room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: very comfortable, location next to the beach fabulous.
Cons: i would have loved coffee making facilities in the bedroom.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Good breakfast and cosy vibes throughout our whole stay. Loved the bath, dressing gown and bathroom supplies. Also the 2 minute walk to the sandy beach was perfect.
Cons: The walls/doors weren't very sound proof. Would have liked a yoga/pilates session in the afternoon as well as 8am start is a bit earlier when on holiday.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The Gallivant is an exceptional unusual hotel - close to the beautiful Camber sands - modelled on a motel - but no motel was ever this beautiful or comfortable. Food is amazing and staff extraordinarily charming.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The pre-arrival online check in saved time. The hotel is in a fabulous location with amazing Camber Sands beach just across the road, and although Camber itself is not appealing, the hotel is within easy driving distance of beautiful Rye with its antique shops and ancient ale houses. We loved the decor in the rooms and bar/restaurant, and the fabulous square bar. Loved the eco-friendliness and locally sources produce. Loved our room (room 3) with enclosed terrance ideal for the dog who was with us - this room was a lot cheaper than the superior rooms which open out onto a communal garden which would not have been so good for the dog as would have to have been on lead in the garden. The staff were very friendly and made us and the dog feel very welcome.
Cons: When I rang the day before arrival no-one answered the phone, so I had to email . The service on the first night and first morning was a bit slow. We think this was because meals for guests with dogs are taken in the bar area, rather than the main restaurant, so our arrival was not noticed. It would help if waiting staff regularly check whether guests have arrived and sat down in the bar area. We felt that full English or at least eggs shoudl be included in the room rate - we had to pay £4.50 for two poached eggs for breakfast. The bar drinks and food were good, but not exceptional, and the prices too high as a result (£14 for a champagne cocktail, £9 for a glass of wine, £22 for a pork chop, £29 for a Dover sole) especially as potatoes and veg had to be ordered and paid for separately (small bowl of chips or of kale £4.50). We stayed for 2 nights and the dinner menu did not change and there were no specials. That said, we would recommend this place, especially for a break for a couple with a dog, though we would go out for a meal somewhere else on one night if we came for the weekend again.

Pros: The breakfast was fresh and tasty. An excellent location right in the middle of Rye but with a car park opposite if you drive in. The hosts were very welcoming and friendly.

Pros: The staff were very attentive. Kitchen is brilliant, producing wonderful food.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location. Our room and bathroom were very nice and spacious. Our breaskfasts were gorgeous.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The excellent decor and ambience of Saltcote coupled with the delightful owners’ continued attention to detail, along with their kind and humorous general approach made the Saltcote visit truly memorable:)
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The two owners seemed like old friends from the moment we met Nothing is too much trouble. We came back from eating out to a torrential downpour. The minute we attempted to get out of the car Paul (joint owner) rushed across in the pouring rain with two umbrellas What service indeed!!!
Cons: Absolutely nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: One of the most welcoming hospitable places I have ever stayed in. The hosts are just fantastic and the whole premises is spotless. Very comfortable and good location. Great views from our room and lovely grounds. Breakfast was exceptional.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We had a lovely large suite with a very comfortable bed and sofa. We appreciated the turn down service and the glass of liqueur awaiting us on our return from dinner. The owners were very friendly and welcoming and gave helpful recommendations on places to eat and the breakfast was superb. We were even offered a glass of champagne to celebrate my husband's birthday!
Cons: Difficult to find anything to complain about! the water could have been hotter in our bathroom but this was a temporary problem and easily fixed. The external staircase that we were asked to use was a fire escape and was a bit steep for those with mobility issues.

Pros: Great stay. Lovely hotel - swimming pool was lovely - brilliant location and staff were fantastic.
Cons: The breakfast was average - Sausages and bacon were really good though. Better Eggs and Bread would go a long way.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Really peaceful and relaxing break. Lovely friendly and helpful staff, great location to access local pubs and restaurants. Right next to the high street with a nice selection of little shops. Nice big car park around the back of the hotel which did at times get busy, but we were lucky to have a spot. Breakfast was nice and they were happy to accommodate adapting the menu. We enjoyed the spa area. Overall a really enjoyable break.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff lovely. Breakfast excellent. Nice warm atmosphere.
Cons: bit cobwebby in the windows and balance stained.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Staff: Super friendly, really helpful and it was a very nice environment. Breakfast: The breakfast was delicious and very filling! Great service. Location: Perfect location. Big car park and it was a lovely stay. The interior of the hotel is beautiful.
Cons: A few minor complaints: As the building is old - it was very noisy. Every window and door rattled from the wind. All night we kept being woken up by the banging/rattling noises of the wind blowing in between the gaps of the door/windows. They need to be sealed/adjusted to prevent the rattling sounds. The blankets for us were too heavy and thick. The bed and pillows were comfortable. It was too hot so I'm glad we found a fan in the room. The spa unfortunately was disappointing - jacuzzi same temperate as the pool was not very exciting. It looks a lot nicer than it is in person. For the location it's pretty great however I believe it's a bit over priced for the overall experience.
10.0 Excellent

Cons: There wasn’t anything wrong with the property
10.0 Excellent

Cons: Some areas could possibly benefit from updating decor wise but it didn’t bother me and the hotel generally had a warm, cosy feel.

7.0 Good
Pros: Very Good
Cons: N/A
7.0 Good
Pros: Breakfast was very good. As we were there for Valentine's Weekend the menu for dinner was the same for the 2 nights - as a vegetarian that gave me no choice for the second night. As the weather was very stormy we decided to go home on the Saturday afternoon and did not stay for the second night. The nature reserve is quite close by and would be lovely later in the year.
Cons: More choice for vegetarians!!!! Same old story - just 1 choice - OK if you only want to stay 1 night.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Great value small hotel for a business stay in Rye. Check-in was managed by a very friendly and helpful lady. My rom over looked the river and whilst a little worn around the edges, was perfectly comfortable, clean and quiet. Breakfast was very good with enough choice and unlimited. I would stay here again, it's a good 3 star hotel.
Cons: Nothing really for the money I paid to stay here.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Really friendly and helpful staff. Good location with a 2 minute walk into Rye. Comfortable room and good breakfast. Ample parking on site.
Cons: Our only quibble is that the room was really warm and we couldn't find a way to turn down the heat. Adjusting the room thermostat (even turning it down completely) didn't seem to have any effect and neither did turning off the radiator valve. However, given we were staying during a cold February it would have been a much bigger problem if the the room had been too cold.

Cons: Poor food quality, no atmosphere in dining room
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Great breakfast nice room Lovely
7.5 Good
Pros: Staff were very attentive and happy.
Cons: Facilities need to be updated, we lost power to the sockets late one night but had no phone to call reception. Also the swimming pool was a bit cool
5.0 Okay
Pros: The breakfast staff were polite, the breakfast was plentiful and fresh. Generally, the staff were friendly, if a bit absent minded. The housekeeping in the rooms is efficient and non-intrusive. We aren't pet owners, but could see that the welcoming pet policy must attract loyal pet-loving customers and the pets were well provided for by the hotel.
Cons: We had to send a dinner plate back as it tasted as if the grill had deposited cleaning product on the steak. (It was replaced straight away.) The carpets throughout the corridors and in the room smelled dirty. The cushions/pillows in the bedroom were a bit smelly. The bathroom looked like it hadn't had an update since about 1985. Considering the (considerable) price, we were pretty astonished by the standard of upkeep (or lack of it). Decor in the room dated and old; stains on the wall. Staff were overly relaxed and in some cases undertrained; we witnessed a conversation between a receptionist and a young barman where it became clear that neither of them knew the difference between tonic water and soda water. Although amusing, it's not classy and certainly not in front of paying customers. When coming to the bar for a drink, we consistently had to clear the table ourselves in order to sit down at it. We also had to seek out a willing bartender, as they were often busy doing something else.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved our stay over the Valentine's weekend. Spa was lovely and the staff were friendly and professional. Would highly recommend this hotel...lovely place!
4.0 Okay
Pros: Staff were very friendly
