Visitors to Florida will often head straight for the big city thrills and Cuban beats of Miami, or if travelling with children, Walt Disney World in Orlando to eagerly have your photo taken with a man in a Mickey Mouse suit. The great state of Florida has so much more to offer, and those who crave a slice of nature can do no better than hopping onto Highway 1 and heading across the bridge to the town of Key Largo. At just under two hours drive from Miami; Key Largo holidays are a perfect opportunity to soak up the sun without the crowds.
While the island in Florida Keys is also called Key Largo, most visitors will head to the town of Key Largo, a sleepy seaside village with a population of just over 10,000 residents. It’s amazing that such a place is just a couple of hours from a major metropolis, and standing on the beach facing out to the Bahamas, you’ll feel a true sense of tranquillity. The town enjoys 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, and while the island's moderate size avoids overcrowding, June until August are the hotter months, and are therefore the most popular.
The town is popular with divers due to the coral reef, and the safe warm tropical waters are great for novices too. Key Largo holidays are also a great idea for animal lovers, and the Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge is just a short distance away, on the north of the island. Unsurprisingly, fine-dining features heavily on many Key Largo holidays with an abundance of fresh seafood pulled from local waters each day. The Fish House Restaurant on Overseas Highway has been in operation for decades and even has a fish market attached - perfect if you don’t feel like casting a line and catching your own dinner.
