The Kia assigned had a malfunction of the air conditioning system that likely had been noticed by an employee during cleaning. When I called the Hertz location, I got no answer multiple times. I then called another local Hertz that was actually closer at that moment and the same thing, no answer multiple times. I drove to that second location and they swapped the vehicle for the only thing they had available, a Jeep Wrangler. Much worse fuel, mileage, and noisier, but at least it worked. It had not been cleaned up at all and had around 3/4 of a tank of fuel. When I returned it, I noted the experience with the kind & concerned staff member (in another city,) and she kindly credited a good portion of the rental for all the mishaps, which I very much appreciated.Reviewed 6 Jun 2026

3 hour delay getting the car despite a reservation and checking in online. Ridiculous overbooking which is entirely the fault of Hertz. Reserved a car on the app, went to pick it up at Union Station (in sub-zero temperatures of Washington DC) and they told us they had no cars. We were told this happens all the time. How is this permitted to continue?Reviewed 16 Feb 2026

Hertz did not have a 12-passenger van available at reservation date/time. I had eight family members, two in car seats, waiting to be picked up at 9:00 am, and I was told to leave and to return at noon to see if a van had become available. Then, they changed to “we’ll call you when one becomes available”. Offered a minivan or a Suburban in lieu, even though I told them I had nine passengers. Did not seek a van from another location. Said they could not refund me because I had pre-paid. Found another rental agency with a 12-passenger van at IAD and paid a premium for the rental, but wasn’t going to make my family wait until Hertz bothered to find a van. Person at counter was unclear about getting a transponder. I asked him if only certain lanes required a transponder and he didn't reply. The Jeep got terrible fuel economy and had a small rear cargo space for such a big car. There was insufficient signage to understand where to park the car to return it.Reviewed 23 Oct 2025

They tried to cancel or adjust my reservation the same day, two hours before the pick up time. I requested a 12 seat van and after i pre-checked in 2 days before (through their website) a manager caled me 2 hours before my reservation letting me know that they do not have the vehicle in stock.Reviewed 30 Jun 2025
