Situated on Crete's stunning northwestern coast and set on a bay facing the dramatic Spinalonga Peninsula, Elounda is without doubt a truly breathtaking spot. With its evocative harbour full of colourful fishing boats and a town square replete with friendly tavernas, shops and bars, holidays in Elounda have something for everyone. Add to this the fact that Elounda's 200-metre stretch of beach has been distinguished as a Blue Flag beach and it's clear to see why so many people choose to return to this supremely charming up-and-coming resort town again and again.
While Crete's status as the the mildest place in Greece ensures visitors can expect good weather all year-round, most people choose to visit during the spring, summer or autumn months. Holidaymakers visiting in the high summer months of July and August can look forward to experiencing 12 hours of sunshine per day and temperature highs in the 30s. Most flights into Crete arrive and depart via Heraklion Airport. Flights to and from the UK are plentiful, and take around four hours. Transfers to and from the resort normally take somewhere between 2-2½ hours. Crete is on Eastern European Time (GMT+2) so British holidaymakers need to remember to change their watches by two hours upon landing.
Elounda holidays afford visitors a wide range of things to see and do. Those who don't want to veer too far from the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean will enjoy the parasols and watersports on hand at the sandy beach, as well as the snorkelling opportunities dotted around the rocky coves. Further afield there are the hauntingly surreal remains of the sunken city of Olous to explore on Spinalonga island, as well as the decadent delights of the Minoan Palace archaeological remains to take in at nearby Malia.
