Sanibel is a city in Florida on Sanibel Island which is east of the Lee County. As it is a barrier island it is renowned for its shell beaches. The Gulfside City Park also has beaches along its nature trails, and includes tables and barbecue grills for picnics.
To reach Sanibel cross the Sanibel Causeway at Punta Rassa. Sanibel Island does not have any airport or ferry connections. The nearest airport to land at for Sanibel holidays is Southwest Florida International Airport which is about 25 away. Sanibel is five hours behind GMT, and has a tropical climate. As such, there is plenty of sunshine; but the summer months also have the most rainfall. In addition, tropical cyclones begin in the summer. Consequently, late spring is perhaps the best season for Sanibel holidays.
Sanibel has sandy beaches with an abundance of shells. Bowman's Beach is the place where the Lighthouse Beach & Fishing Pier, and a historic lighthouse are located at the eastern tip of Sanibel. From there travellers can follow a boardwalk nature trail through the wetlands. Tarpon Bay Beach is one with high sands and good shelling. It is also the ideal beach for windsurfing. Causeway Beaches are a good spot for fishing and picnics.
Aside from the beaches, check out the J.N. (Ding) Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Spread acorss 5,200 acres, the reserve includes a multitude of birds. At the Sanibel Moorings Botanical Gardens there is an ever-expanding collection of tropical plants exploding with colour.
