FAQs - booking Sri Lanka flights

  • Can I fly directly from London to Sri Lanka?

SriLankan Airlines flies directly from London to Sri Lanka daily. These flights leave in the mid evening from Heathrow Airport and land at Colombo International Airport after an overnight flight of about 10h 45min. The fastest one-stop flight is on Qatar Airways, which flies between the same airports, stopping in Doha on the way, taking about 12h 30min.

  • How do I get from Colombo Airport to the city centre?

Colombo Airport is some way outside the centre of Colombo. You can even catch a 15min Cinnamon Air single-prop Cessna flight there, but that’s probably overkill. Instead, board a Sri Lanka Transport Board bus that leaves every 30min from Katunayake Airport Bus Station, taking about 45min to central Colombo. Otherwise it’s about a 25min drive.

  • What other towns or cities can I reach from Colombo?

Colombo is roughly in the middle of Sri Lanka’s east coast. To explore more of the island, you can travel inland to Kandy, another of the country’s main cities, pretty much in the centre of the island. To the south, you can visit Galle and Matale, both coastal resorts. Towns worth visiting on the west coast of Sri Lanka include Batticaloa and Kalmunai.

  • Are there child seat laws in Sri Lanka?

There aren’t any official laws regarding child seats in Sri Lanka, but the government together with private road safety organisations has a strong public safety initiative encouraging people to use them. It can sometimes be difficult to get a child seat on short notice if you hire a car on arrival, so it’s best to book one in advance.

  • Will I need a visa to visit Sri Lanka?

As a UK citizen, you won’t need a visa to enter Sri Lanka, but you will require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). It’s best to apply for this online before you leave to avoid unforeseen delays on arrival. The ETA allows you to enter Sri Lanka twice, for up to 30 days in total.

  • How does KAYAK find such low prices on flights from London to Sri Lanka?

KAYAK is a travel search engine. That means we look across the web to find the best prices we can find for our users. With over 2 billion flight queries processed yearly, we are able to display a variety of prices and options on flights from London to Sri Lanka.

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from London to Sri Lanka?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a flight from London to Sri Lanka is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from London to Sri Lanka?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional return ticket. You could then fly from London to Sri Lanka with an airline and back with another airline.

  • What is the cheapest time of day to fly to Sri Lanka?

The cheapest time of day to fly to Sri Lanka is generally at night, when retur flights cost £953 on average. The most expensive time of day to fly to Sri Lanka is generally in the morning, which is peak travel time and where the average cost of a ticket is £993.

  • After your long flight, you can enjoy a recuperative massage in the airport spa and salon when you arrive at Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), for a small fee .

Over - amazing. The aircraft is somewhat old on this route.

Boarding for business class passengers can be improved. Also, when debarking the aircraft, Economy passengers are let off first due the way the configuration of the cabin upstairs.

Excellent comfort and entertainment. Service poor..Food average with little choice.

Comfort good. Service as usual poor. Cabin temperature as usual too cold, about 15 degrees

Seat 💺 was all the way on last row. Food was okay .

Boarding, seats, entertainment and service were all great. Food was great except for the fact that there were too many sweet items.

everything was great. I don't use on-board entertainment at all (I just read or sleep), but I appreciate that I couldn't hear anyone else's!

Delayed, Bad American style food (not tasty, horrible cheese for a flight to France). Incompetent cabin crew (I asked how to connect by cable my headphones and the flight attendant suggested me Bluetooth which is not available). Good space

The service was excellent. We flew coach on this leg of our trip and it was still very pleasant.

The space was tight, hardly any leg room and the crew surprisingly were busy and did not take the time to attend to passengers, felt rushed. There was a delay for check in since the systems were down the airport staffs were accommodating

I recently travelled with Qatar Airways from Doha to Dulles in the QSuite, and the experience was nothing short of exceptional. The QSuite truly feels like a First-Class experience, with its luxurious design, privacy, and comfort. The cabin crew, especially the lady in charge of the cabin, was remarkable—professional, attentive, and genuinely kind. The food was excellent, and the comfort of the seat was absolutely first-class, making the journey smooth and enjoyable. While the in-flight experience was outstanding, I have a few points of feedback. Firstly, the content available in the in-flight entertainment system could be expanded and upgraded to include a more diverse and updated collection. This would elevate the entertainment experience to match the premium standards of the QSuite. Secondly, regarding the Wi-Fi service: while QSuite passengers receive one hour of complimentary Wi-Fi, any additional usage requires a fee of USD 10. Considering the premium pricing of QSuite, it would be more fitting to include unlimited Wi-Fi as part of the experience, further enhancing the luxury offered to passengers. Lastly, I must highlight an issue with luggage handling. Unfortunately, my luggage did not make it through the transit, which was disappointing. While the ground crew assured me that it would be delivered to my home on the same day as it was arriving on the next flight, this promise was not fulfilled, and the delay added unnecessary inconvenience to an otherwise excellent experience. Overall, the QSuite experience was exceptional, but addressing these areas would further solidify Qatar Airways’ position as a leader in luxury air travel.

The food is not good and also if you ask crew to bring something they say ok I will bring but you will never get it. Please they should listen good to passengers

There was not enough food for everybody. Some dishes were missing.

Boston to Doha was great but Doha to Dhaka was the worst experience.

Do not overbook flights and kick out confirmed ticketed passengers :-(

The rows of seats in economy class are seriously close to one another making eating and resting just about impossible - there is hardly any legroom. Anyone larger than average size would have an incredibly uncomfortable flight. I had to basically share my seat with the lady passenger next to me as she was too big to fit into her allotted seat.

My carry on bag was taken by Alaska Air as we boarded in LAX! She said there was not room. There was plenty of room. I told her that my meds and personal items were in it. She did not care. She said it would be sent to my final destination, Nairobi. Well it got to Nairobi the day I was to fly home. The handle of my bag was crushed so could not retract. So I had to remove it. I had to buy converters, malaria medication. personal items. I filled out the missing form at the Nairobi airport. I asked that it be shipped to the Kisumu airport. When it was obviously not going to make it for my time in Kenya. I asked that it be sent to John Wayne Airport. NONE of that happened. I only knew it was at Nairobi because my air tag indicated it was finally in Nairobi the day I was leaving Kenya! Now I need to purchase a new carry on bag!!!

Overall experience was OK. Seats were truly uncomfortable for such a long flight. Food quality was mediocre at best. The staff was great though!

Food was good, attendants were friendly. Seats were not comfortable. Did not receive any amenities such as eyemask or earplugs that would have helped sleep. Additionally a large group of passengers boarded very late into boarding and were a disruption for almost the whole flight. Flight attendants did their best but the kids were making so much noise, kicking seats, and half the time no adult was sat with them so they weren’t being managed.

second leg was more comfortable. Customer service in Abu Dhabi is okay.

Crew Check-In – Kolkata (CCU) The crew handling check-in in Kolkata was outstanding—efficient, courteous, and highly organized. Flight Segment – CCU to Abu Dhabi (AUH) A standard flight overall. Notably, only one in-flight meal option—a vegetarian curry—was available, which seemed unsuitable for a red-eye journey. The crew offered no alternatives, which was unexpected. Flight Segment – Abu Dhabi to Rome (AUH-FCO) Comfort improved on this leg, but service quality was average, falling short of Etihad’s premium standards. Crew attention was heavily absorbed by a difficult couple in Row 15 (port side), resulting in disproportionate focus. It was concerning that a steward had to personally return to apologize, a task better suited for supervisory staff. This highlights a development opportunity for supervisors Anna and Quashim in managing guest escalation professionally.

Certainly! Horrible. After paying for seats, I was cramped, my daughters legs kept hitting the seat in front, I had no overhead bin space and no help from stewards on board, the food was served cold, when asked for snacks was told to wait and never received any, the flight was cold with no temperature controls. Entertainment was outdated. I booked this through partnership with American Airlines but will avoid in the future.

Took a long time for boarding. The flight was comfortable.

Flight was delayed due to slow boarding process by etihad. Update food options and movies as well.

Extremely bad food, they never gave our bags in time, the online check-in did not let us check in because we had Indian OCI not sure why we were given the option to check in then, because we couldn’t check in online we had to go in person and we were not able to change our seats and sit with our family

Likes: on time departure, new plane Didn’t like:very poor quality food, very limited entertainment.no amenity kit etc.

The seat was like there is no leg space....there were no proper option for food in the airline. It seemed like the airline was at brink of bankruptcy. The crew was helpful except for a few.

The flight was delayed which cause me to miss my connecting flight in AbuDhsbi airport.

From the checking, ground handlimg was very poor.seems new personal on duty, people qho suppose to be teaching them didnt see around.new people may mislead passenger, as of flt info boards, not give proper info.even informatiin counter people dont get uptodate info.makin big ques, totally disaster.guests were not happy about it.even boarding to aircraft some BC class pax sent to aft staircase, some aft pasx sent to front door.poor ground handling.may need to improove.

Nice crew.flight delay fromBKK for some ground prep issue I guess, crew serve well to guest, and respect to guest as well. As usual AC is old,and nt much comert in compare to other rehional airliners.other than that.all good

All good, on time, depart.only bad side was, airxraft is too old to be in business.hope ailine will manage somethinv somewhat.all good

Flight was on time.food is as usual good.Aircraft is old.old A320, seats aithout any display.crew serve well

Was good, comparatively. A330, with good crew set.on time depature. And crew try there best, to make thing efficient.

Spesific ,Crew and cabin manager, look after all pax on board despite being in a old A320 equipment.Got free seat upgrade as well, but old style seats, no much comfert on it.But food and the spesific crew, was amazing.maintain airlanka standerd.the cabin manager, who was so much keen, keen operate as per SOP.

Was got free upgrade, on old A320.aircraft is out dated kind of.bt service ,cabin manager, tried there best.and food was excelent.

When flying from Indian Sector, should be more prepared with Indian food

KAYAK Real time status update is not accurate.the flight inbound rejected and go around.and came back and land. Delay abt 30 min.still shows ontime.track ur self if u wana real time.and cabin crew s are nicer. Aircraft is jst ok.old airplane.and in midflight ,seems have some compressor issue.airconditioning was nt work properly either.I could litarary see guests were cheking if AC is working.bt on landing it start to gv cool.which probably some one intentionaly kept .which was so bad.even breathing was bit difficult.otjer than that.for me all ok.

This leg of the trip was smoother than compared to the initial trip. Sri Lankan Airlines still have much work to do to improve the overall travel experience.

I didn’t have food and they don’t include entertainment. Not much leg room at all. Staff were great.

Better synchronizing the boarding processes. The audio announcements, the personnel and the digital signage were not saying the same thing. All confusion.

Business class was nothing more than Economy with middle seat empty. Uncomfortable seat and leg room. A mom behind me had a 18 month/2 yr old on her lap, who had his feet on my back all the time- while middle seat remained empty. Pretty much not worth the fare. Very disappointed.

The first class seats were unusable, mine at the end of the flight, my husband's in the middle of the flight, and the one next to me was unusable either, they had to move the person to another seat.

charging port did not work, no entertainment system. Other than that the flight was good and safe.

Last minute gate change. Didn’t put our TSA global on our trip even though we asked multiple times to confirm. Did not help with food when could not eat what was served.

When Stephen arrived with our wheel chairs - we were in excellent hands! He was such great help with getting our rental car and then reporting our missing luggage. When you are exhausted from traveling for too many hours, he was just what we needed to navigate everything! Give that guy a raise!

The cabin was bit colder than I like but the crew members looked after us very well. They did even offer hot water bottle and hot chocolate. I cannot rate the crew enough excellent is not good enough. They really were wonderful.

Boarding is always a challenge as folks in al groups crowd around for no reason, but crew handled it well. I once again applaud the LHR ground baggage staff as they got our bags from a flight at Terminal 5A to a flight in Terminal 5C within 40 minutes...amazing!

Gate information deliberately delayed to only one hour B4 flight, lack of info finding gate.
