FAQs - booking India flights

  • Can I fly indirectly to India at a better rate?

You can find cheap flights to India that stop over for plane changes out of most UK airports. These indirect flights often offer better value for money, particularly those that make two stopovers. As a good example, you can book a combination flight from Heathrow (LHR) with Wizz Air, changing aircraft in Bucharest (OTP) and then again in Abu Dhabi (AUH), where you'll switch to GoFirst. You'll land at New Delhi Airport (DEL).

  • Are there airlines flying to India that produce less CO2?

KLM makes a very good choice if you're environmentally conscious and want to reduce your carbon footprint when flying to India. The airline saves more than 50% in carbon emissions on most of its flights. Lufthansa and British Airways come next in line, reducing carbon emissions by about 48% and 47%, respectively.

  • Are child seats mandatory in India?

India has no laws mandating that young children need to travel in child seats, but it's a very good idea to hire one as a bookable extra if you're going to be driving around one of the larger cities like New Delhi or Mumbai. India's traffic conditions can be hectic, so you can expect to have to make sudden stops quite often. It pays to make sure your children are safely restrained. You can book these at the airport car hire desks through KAYAK.

  • Are there direct flights to India?

It depends which city you are flying to, but Air India and Virgin Air operate direct flights to New Delhi from London Heathrow (LHR) and British Airways have non-stop flights to Mumbai.

  • Can I carry duty free alcohol into India?

As it is forbidden to consume alcohol in some states in India, visitors who want to enjoy their favourite alcoholic beverage at sundown will be glad to know that if you are a non-resident, it is possible to take up to two litres of duty-free alcohol into the country. You can purchase this at your airport of departure or carry it in hold luggage if it has been purchased before you check in for your flight.

  • Where should I fly to in India if I want to see the Taj Mahal?

If you are going to see the Taj Mahal, you will need to get to the city of Agra. From the UK, it is advisable to book a flight into New Delhi and then arrange to take public transport from New Delhi to Agra.

  • I am only going to visit Goa, what is the best airport to use?

Goa has an airport that operates international flights during peak tourist times. However, as the airport is set up to receive mainly domestic flights, it might be more practical to fly into Mumbai and catch one of the many connecting flights to Goa.

  • How long is the flight to India?

An average direct flight from the United Kingdom to India takes 12h 54m, covering a distance of 4610 miles. The most popular route is London - New Delhi with an average flight time of 8h 10m.

  • What is the cheapest flight to India?

  • How does KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to India

  • Looking for cheap airfare to India? 25% of our users found tickets to India for the following prices or less: Cheap flights to India from London Heathrow £435 one-way - £526 round-trip, from London Gatwick £366 one-way - £564 round-trip, from Birmingham £418 one-way - £833 round-trip
  • Book at least 1 week before departure in order to get a below-average price for flights to India.
  • High season is considered to be January, November and December. The cheapest month to fly from the United Kingdom is September.
  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest India flight deals.
  • You'll find cheap flights to India that leave from most of the major cities in the UK, including those in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. The majority of flights originate from any one of London's airports, so you can choose any of them, depending where you're coming from.
  • To help you find cheap flights to India, use the filters on the KAYAK live flight schedules. On this route there's a very cost-effective direct flight from London Heathrow (LHR) to Indira Gandhi New Delhi Airport (DEL) on Virgin Atlantic.
  • Instead of using public transport in Indian cities, it's a better idea to organise a hire car. This is equally true whether you're staying in an urban area or planning to go sightseeing in the countryside. It will give you all the independence you need.
  • India has several international airports that provide onward connections to other destinations. Mumbai is a good central hub that has flight connections to both the north and south of the country. You could consider flights into New Delhi if your visit is focused mainly on the northern part of India or Chennai if you want to explore the southern part of the country.
  • If you are looking at flights to India so you can visit some of the less touristic states in the northeast of the country, you could consider flying into Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) in Kolkata. From here, you can take domestic flights to airports such as Pakyong (PYG), Jorhat (JRH) or Dimapur (DMU), and make your way into the mountainous states of Sikkim, Assam and Nagaland.
  • For visitors wanting to spend time in Kerala, there are two main cities with airports – Kochi and Trivandrum. If you want to spend your time at the beach, then Trivandrum Airport (TRV) is the best airport to fly into and Cochin Airport (COK) in Kochi will give you access to other areas of interest. From the UK, it is advisable to first fly into Bengaluru or Chennai and then take a domestic flight to one of these two airports in Kerala.
  • Visas are required for all visitors to India and it is necessary to obtain the visa before you fly. It is possible to obtain an e-Visa, which is valid for 60 days and can only be used for purposes of tourism, business, medical visits or visiting family. In order to obtain this e-Visa, UK passport holders will need to have a passport that is valid for 6 months after entering India and has two blank pages in it.
  • As visitors cannot enter India carrying Indian Rupees, it is necessary to have organised your currency requirements before you travel. It is possible to take foreign currency cash into the country, which you can then change at a bureau de change (each international airport has currency desks) into the local currency.

accomodating check in staff, friendly flight crew ( a crew member was speaking tactlessly and was overfamiliar with passengers

The Virgin seats in business are quite narrow and also don’t recline enough in a seated position. When you make them into a bed, it is quite hard, despite the thin cover and cannot be adjusted at all, in comparison to business seats in other airlines. Virgin need to upgrade the quality of their seats. The food on this flight, I had an AVML was not good, normally though I have found the food to be good. Other than that, the staff were very attentive and pleasant during this long 14 hour flight.

If I could fly Virgin Atlantic airlines to every place, I need to go, I would. Leaving Heathrow through the special virgin air entrance, security is completely white glove service. I love this airline. From ticketing agents to flight staff everyone tries to make it a wonderful & happy flight experience. I wish other airlines copied the positive culture of Virgin Airlines.

Pros: "Nice crew"
Cons: "Comfort. Seats were very uncomfortable with absolutely NO leg room. I fly a lot and this was one of the WORST leg room experiences I had."
Pros: "Excellent airline"
Cons: "The business seats could have been wider. I have sat on business class other airlines and the seat was a bit wider but overall still great experience"
Pros: "The crew were really nice and seemed to genuinely care about the passengers, were approachable and were very happy to chat with passengers and help them out."
Cons: "The food options always seem to run out by the back of the plane and this time didn't match the menu they gave me at the start of the flight, not that I minded because the option I was given was pretty tasty."
Pros: "crew was nice"
Cons: "First time flying with a partner through Delta, so they stuck us on a Virgin Atlantic flight meaning I didn't get my free Delta check in bag (a fee of $60 each way) when I have gotten it every other flight I have ever taken with them. It was also 2 whole hours late in boarding."
Cons: "The food is not very good at all. One mediocre meal served soon after take-off, then for the rest of the flight tasteless, cardboard pasties and wraps."
Pros: "Super friendly and helpful crew, food etc was fantastic very enjoyable flight. Thank you"
Pros: "This flight is the best I’ve been on! Boarding was easy, the seats were comfortable, the film choice was excellent and I enjoyed everything I ate. I really felt I was being treated well by all the staff on board."
Cons: "Nothing"
Pros: "Loaded passengers quickly with so many issues at the airport"
Cons: "No thought to seating and how they change and scatter families in different places not too far from each other. Plus seats were confirmed."
Pros: "Once we were in the air (see below), everything was very good."
Cons: "Poor organisation at the airport (maybe notGulfAir's fault). Flight slightly delayed. Gate changed at last minute, board said "Boarding now", but we then waited something like 30 minutes at the new gate to actually start boarding."
Pros: "I' not sure which flight this relates to. I've taken economy and business class and clearly the business class is better but economy is fine. The crew were good in both classes and whilst the food in business was better I didn't have a problem in economy either."
Cons: "Check in was fine and very friendly but boarding could be better particularly in business. At Heathrow it was a bit chaotic as all classes seemed to be mixed up so it was difficult for priority passengers such as disabled to get through everyone crowded up to the desks and the same applied for business class as well. The IFE wasn't too bad but it could be better. Bahrain airport is a mess and the boarding gates seem to be more like corridors with seats in them so it's difficult again when they call for business class passengers as unless you are already at the front you have to try to work your way through. I believe the airport is being rebuilt. If so then things will probably improve. I'm not sure why there needs to be 2 security checks within a few yards of each other when transiting between flights. they don't have this problem in Doha."
Pros: "Seat was not comfortable TV and the hand set was not used friendly Scrambled eggs on the breakfast was really not good ...., sorry !!! Finally the smell of the J class area was bad Like old shoes smell !!!!! Sorry to say that but it was like that Next time please take care of this"
Pros: "They are not as bad as their reputation states"
Cons: "Gulf air staff at cairo airport refused to give me the boarding pass of the 2nd flight while i was returning from cairo, while in dubai they gave me both boarding passes Although i told them the layover is under an hour Luckily bahrain airport accepts mobile check in and i barely caught the flight"
Cons: "The boarding process could have been more smooth. The flight wasn’t comfortable. The crew wasn’t courteous and more rude. The food was not good at all."
Pros: "prices, efficiency, helpful crew"
Cons: "they did not give out headphones and mine did not fit the aircraft. It would've been nice if I was able to watch something to pass the time."
Pros: "Friendly and helpful flight crew Good food Free movies to warch"
Pros: "I got a business class upgrade and it was amazing!"
Pros: "Food was pretty good"
Cons: "The aircraft left an hr late with passengers waiting on board ..no alcohol on the flight which to be fair I knew was their policy..Then they couldnt get the doors open at the destination Airport leaving us onboard for 45 minuutes at the gate..I also found the cabin unbearably hot with no individual air con controls..the crew were also nowhere to be seen most of the flight so had to get up frequently for water and inconveniencing the passenger next to me"

BA once again made it even worse. Crew arrived almost 1 hour late in São Paulo delaying the flight, food (in Business / Club) was simply horrible and our luggages were lost in London. It is just amazing the effort made by BA to irritate and make the life of its frequent flyers miserable ! Congrats BA !

Cons: "Customer Service is Dead with British Airways!!! I will make every effort not to fly with BA again"
Pros: "seat was not comfortable as it was economy. staff was decent."
Cons: "friendlier staff, better food options"
Cons: "We were delayed for an hour in London and then immigration and customs in Chicago were awful"
Pros: "Crew were helpful. Food was OK. I had Hindu meal and it was hot and tasty but salty."
Cons: "Seats could have been more comfortable. I am not a tall person so seat spacing was not an issue, but for any one more than 5'8'' tall, seat spacing may be uncomfortable."
Pros: "Seats were nice"
Cons: "Complementary water... It was a decently long fly not to offer anything."
Cons: "You have to pay for food, snacks and water on this flight. there were no complimentary snacks or drinks given."
Pros: "the crew was accommodating"
Cons: "i was asked to pay to check in my luggage :("
Pros: "There was a good selection of very different movies to watch. I found four that I wanted to see."
Cons: "There were not enough chairs in the waiting area. There was a long wait, first, just to get on the plane, then, instead of letting us stay in the waiting area, we were all seated, and left waiting for at least an hour, most of that time without explanation, sitting in a stifling plane at the gate, without being allowed to get up and move around. Also, the ratio of carbohydrates to protein in the main meal was way out of kilter. I don't want rice + potatoes + bread + crackers all in one meal, with zero vegetables. The tiny piece of cheese helped."
Pros: "My first domestic flight with BA for years yet the service imo has got even slicker and better. From check-in to boarding to disembarking and all ahead of schedule, I doubt if I would fly domestically with anyone else."
Pros: "Crew was nice and friendly. Food came in a paper bag but still was good and plenty. The plane was an Airbus-330, it's a smaller plane for shorter routes but the seats were actually more comfortable than the newest Boeing 787-9 they use for long hauls."
Cons: "Don't bus the passengers to the plane and make them climb the stairs. It's almost 2020."
Pros: "On-ground customer service of Ethiad, Fatima. She was professional and understanding."
Cons: "Don’t overlook international flights and penalize travelers who don’t have a seat selection but checked in on time."
Pros: "Nothing about this airline"
Cons: "I requested for a aisle seat as I was travelling with 2 yrs old but they put me in the middle with other two people on th side . Very horrible ."
Pros: "On time, confortable flight. Love the A330 seat arrangement."
Cons: "Boarding a bit chaotic at Abu Dhabi airport and there was no electronic display indication at the gate that it was the flight to Beirut."
Pros: "Smooth ride"
Cons: "The food wasn't great specially the breakfast vegetarian option . The staff should be more friendly and the options have a long layover"
Pros: "Aircraft wasn’t too full and crew were happy for us to spread out a bit."
Pros: "Great cabin staff"
Cons: "Uncomfortable. Entertainment was unwatchable. In physical pain from poor seating."
Pros: "They didn't let me n my sister fly. Plus they took 3 hours to give our bags back."
Cons: "The attitude of the airline n everyone was poor. No help nothing from anyone."
Pros: "Almost everything. Lovely staff....good seats.....plenty of recent movie options. Made 7 hours fly by!"
Pros: "I liked the wider seats and slightly more leg-room on the Abu Dhabi/London leg of the flight, the food was good and the staff pleasant."
Cons: "I was randomly picked for an "extra security check" at the Heathrow check-in in Abu Dhabi, which seemed ridiculous after going through the Johannesburg security and x-ray check as well as the Abu Dhabi one, and then having to switch on all of my electronic equipment and be swabbed for what I assume was drugs felt a bit over-the-top."

Our flight was cancelled due to technical issues. Air India staff caused each one of us to go through nightmare before finally placing us in a hotel by 2 am. I was asked to share a single room with a stranger. I insisted that I cannot share the room as I needed privacy due to my vulnerable medical situation (Heart issues, High blood pressure, High Cholesterol and Type 2 diabetics). Even after explaining my medical situation and the need for privacy, Air India instructed the hotel to charge me Rs 4000 for the room and I was forced to pay the amount at 2 am (roughly $49). Air India should refund the amount I paid for my hotel room, at the minimum. Air India didn't have any Standard Operating Procedure to do what/how/when/by whom under this situation. Mom with babies, Elderly people and people with medical condition like me were forced to wander from here to there and talk to each person right from 10pm all the way till 2am. The Air India staff didn't have PA system to give a consistent announcement, instead they were murmuring on a one-o-one basis with more than 200 passengers. It was a sight of utter mismanagement and lack of commonsense. I will not ever, I MEAN EVER TRAVEL an Air India flight even if it is free, and will not recommend Air India to anyone I care.

Contrary to popular belief, Air India is no longer the armpit of the aviation transport industry. It’s a world class change from the TATA’s to privatize & rejuvenate the previously government run airline.

Pros: "with 23 years old aircraft, I expected the seats are not comfortable. Same with the entertainment screen, it did not work for almost half the flight and after that, it started working like 1990s PC. The meal okay compared to other flights. From Ahmedabad to Delhi, there was no meal."
Cons: "The attitude of check-in staff. The Check-in lady was rude to talk, felt like she does not want to help me, answered my question after repeating it 3 times. Also, at the boarding gate, same staff."
Pros: "The timings were the best"
Cons: "Crew can be more friendly and interact work smile, food was stale and lot of scope for improvement and the entertainment consoles werent working"
Pros: "Crew were great!"
Cons: "Delaying the flight by 35 minutes meant I would likely miss my connection. I booked another flight just in case for an hour and a half later. Then delays departing mean that I almost missed my second flight. Thanks to lead cabin crew's assistance and the ground crew at HKIA I made the connection to Shanghai by a minute or two. Boarding was a bit disorganized."
Pros: "Food was good."
Cons: "Seating could be better. I was stuffed to the middle seat."
Cons: "They had not reserved my vegetarian meal and crew was very rude about not being able to serve my meal. Prabir"
Pros: "Normal check in process. Allow a bit longer to get through security as numerous checks. Need itinerary and passport to get into the airport! Keep your boarding pass as need this at the other end to get through customs... for some reason we had to go through international departures for a domestic flight."
Cons: "Entertainment system not working and some of the seats needed repair."
Pros: "Ground and flight crew personnel were friendly and efficient"
Cons: "Many entertainment monitors were inoperative. Seat arm was falling apart. My seat mate's audio did not work. My monitor did not work at all along with many others. My seat cushion was partially detached Food was lousy."
Pros: "The crew was helpful"
Cons: "The aircraft seemed old. The window shutters/dimmers didn’t work so there was no way to avoid the bright sunlight coming in my face. The entertainment touch screen was also not functioning properly."
