FAQs - booking Zimbabwe flights

  • What currency exchange facilities are there at Robert Mugabe International Airport?

The currencies in Zimbabwe are the Real Time Gross Settlement or the US dollar. Worry not if flying to Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, as you will get access to currency exchange facilities. There are banks and foreign exchange points, easily accessible at the arrival areas and the departing terminal. Alternatively, you can withdraw your money at the airport and opt for exchange in other parts of Zimbabwe, as the rates may be slightly lower.

  • I'm travelling to Zimbabwe to visit Victoria Falls. Where should I fly to?

If you are flying to Zimbabwe for Victoria Falls, consider flying to Victoria Falls Airport (VFA), which is approximately 11 miles (18 km) from the falls. Taxis are an easy and fast transit option accessible within the airport terminal, and a quick route is via A8, arriving at Victoria Falls in about 18min.

  • What currency is used in Zimbabwe?

The Zimbabwean dollar has been suspended and replaced with RTGS dollars and the US dollar. You can exchange other currencies for RTGS dollars in Zimbabwe. It might be a good idea to bring US dollars to Zimbabwe, as the country can experience a shortage of cash. RTGS dollars are not worth anything outside Zimbabwe, so if you are given bond notes as change, make sure to spend them all before leaving. RTGS and US dollars both use the symbol $ in Zimbabwe, so do check if the price is quoted in RTGS or US dollar before paying.

  • How can I get to Mana Pools National Park?

The easy way to go to Mana Pools National Park is to get a flight to Harare or Victoria Falls (VFA) airports and arrange a transfer with a tour operator beforehand, but this can be expensive. If you want to travel on your own, you must arrange a 4x4 and access with a vehicle is only allowed during dry season.

  • How can I get to Hwange National Park?

To get to Hwange National Park, you should fly into Victoria Falls airport. From there you can charter private flights, arrange for road transfers or drive yourself. You need a 4x4 to reach some parts of the park.

  • What is the KAZA UniVisa and why do I need it?

The KAZA Univisa allows you to travel between Zimbabwe and Zambia and take day trips into Botswana. It costs around 50 USD (40 GBP) and is valid for 30 days. Sometimes, when visiting a tourist attraction, you may need to cross the border, for example at Victoria Falls, as there are parts that belong to Zambia and parts that belong to Zimbabwe.

  • How long is the flight to Zimbabwe?

An average direct flight from the United Kingdom to Zimbabwe takes 23h 23m, covering a distance of 5221 miles. The most popular route is London - Harare with an average flight time of 12h 25m.

  • What is the cheapest flight to Zimbabwe?

The cheapest ticket to Zimbabwe from the United Kingdom found in the last 72 hours was £505. The most popular route is London Heathrow to Harare and the cheapest round-trip airline ticket found on this route in the last 72 hours was £588.

  • What are the most popular destinations in Zimbabwe?

The next most popular destinations are Victoria Falls (10%) and Bulawayo (7%).

  • How does KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Zimbabwe

  • Book at least 1 week before departure in order to get a below-average price for flights to Zimbabwe.
  • High season is considered to be June, July and August. The cheapest month to fly from the United Kingdom is June.
  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Zimbabwe flight deals.
  • To find cheap flights to Zimbabwe, consider flying to Harare Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE), which is the country’s largest airport. The airport is the central hub connecting you to major cities, including Harare, Chitungwiza, Marondera and Norton. Shuttles and taxis are the primary transit options from the airport to other locations, as public transport is minimal.
  • If travelling with mobility limitations, you can be received by a member of the assistance team at the arrival gates of Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport; they will see you through any transfers and help with your luggage. The airport has mobility facilities too, including wheelchairs and wheelchair-accessible paths. Notify your airline or travel agent at least 48 hours before your flight.
  • Once you arrive at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, you can walk to an onsite lounge for a drink, snack or relax before you proceed to your final destination in Zimbabwe. One example is The Lounge, easily accessible on the ground floor of the terminal building.
  • There are rarely direct flights to Zimbabwe from the UK. The majority of routes involve flying to Johannesburg (South Africa) and then require a connecting flight to Harare, Victoria Falls or Bulawayo. Harare (HRE) is the easiest airport to fly into as it is serviced by many airlines.
  • Preferably, you should allow 3-5h of transit time in Johannesburg, so that you have ample time to catch your connecting flight. Transiting in Johannesburg is rather easy; simply follow the signs for ‘International Transit’. The flight from Johannesburg to Harare takes about 1h 30m.
  • Confirm with your airline(s) whether you have to leave the transit area upon arrival in South Africa. If so, note that you may need to present official documents if you are transiting in South Africa with children (under 18). You may need to present the child’s full unabridged birth certificate upon arrival if the child is travelling only with one parent or without either parent. Sometimes, even accompanied by both parents, a request to see the child’s full unabridged birth certificate may be made, especially if one parent bears a different surname from the child.
  • You should consider flying into Zimbabwe via South Africa. This is usually more affordable and gives you more options to choose from.
  • British citizens will need a visa to enter Zimbabwe. You can either obtain the visa online, at the Zimbabwean Embassy in London or upon arrival in Zimbabwe. The visa usually grants you up to 30 days in Zimbabwe. If you choose to get the visa upon arrival, please bring small change to pay for it. Your passport should have at least six months validity and three empty pages to allow you to enter Zimbabwe and exit via any of the neighbouring countries.

Pros: "Nada"
Cons: "Charged me 30 for allegedly overweight suitcase. The they proceed to lose it."
Cons: "WiFi down the entire flight, made worse by the crew continuously promising it was “about” to work. Wouldn’t recommend Emirates to any professionals traveling who rely on staying connected on such a long flight!"
Cons: "They ran out of non-vegetarian meals, which is not acceptable. The seats were rather narrow"
Cons: "It was my first flight ever. So it was perfect thank you Emirates"
Pros: "Everything"
Cons: "Too much children ob the plain and they are crying"
Pros: "Crew, food, drinks and seats in business class were fantastic."
Pros: "it was good, i like all the services from staff."
Pros: "Great service"
Cons: "The entertainment tv didn’t stay in the right position and the touchscreen didn’t respond all the time."
Cons: "Online Check-in didn't work properly, so we had to check in at the airport. They were understaffed and it took us over an hour to get through check in. The customer service was horrible, and we were only allowed to bring a backpack for a carry on, forcing us to check our one carry on bag. This made our two long flights uncomfortable with nothing to change into once we landed in Dubai and still had another 8 flight to Johannesburg. The flight itself was overbooked, and we then had to place our backpacks under the seats in front of us, giving us no leg room for 13 hrs."

Just snacks, could have more options.boarding was good. Everything else was good. We had a very bad experience with Qatar airways. We were deplaned a few minutes after boarding the flight. Had to wait 8 hours at the airport for the next replacement aircraft to take off. Had a harrowing experience. Were offered coupons for a small meal at the airport. Uncertainty caused a lot of stress and I got a cold and flu like symptoms.

Was worse than a low cost carrier. Experience needs to be better for the price paid.

Pros: "Crew friendly it's my son favorite"
Cons: "Seat selection and little needs comfortable for young kids with mothers"
Pros: "The flight crew/staff were professional and very helpful and accommodating to the passengers from check in to deboarding."
Cons: "Seats were a little close, especially for a long flight, with meals. Tight fit to be maneuvering, literally rubbing elbows."
Cons: "Catering load was poorly estimated. They'd run out of my first choice of brunch despite being in the first row (apparently pancakes are "really popular with the kids" but they don't load extra to account for this). Also ran out of my main choice."
Pros: "The plane was new and spotless, the crew did everything possible to make the flight great. Food service, and Wine and Cocktails were always served with a smiling face and it made you think of flying many years ago. Service cleanliness of the restrooms and staff were top notch"
Cons: "Nothing really."
Pros: "Great crew. Met every request and did a very professional, yet personal job."
Cons: "Overall meals were best I've had on flights. Did not care for last one but probably just a personal taste."
Pros: "Legroom was great Staff were great Bathrooms were very clean and cleaned often in the flight"
Pros: "Everything was great ,On time , comfortable seeds, Crew were very nice , boarding was quick Thank you Qatar Airways"
Cons: "Nothing"
Pros: "I had a slight problem with my visa to the country of my final destination but the check in counter crew and management were very polite, helpful and most of all empathetic. Problem was resolved and, All's well that ends wel."

The flight was delayed with no notice. No inflight entertainment. Communication is vital in any business.

Pros: "Seat reclining was good. Fleece blankets were warm"
Cons: "Blankets had a really bad smell Food options were very limited - even bread was eggless"
Pros: "Helpful friendly crew, reasonable ticket prices."
Cons: "Luggage was delayed by 24 hours, customer service desk in Johannesburg EXTREMELY helpful, in Kigali they were clueless. Transit area very crowded, humid and stuffy."
Pros: "Crew members are extremely polite and friendly. Flight was delayed leaving Kigali captain spoke to each passenger and apologise - great professionalism."
Cons: "Entertainment was limited."
Cons: "No vegetarian option Bad boarding procedures, no one gets direction and it was very slow"
Cons: "THERE WAS MEAT INSIDE MY "VEGETARIAN" MEAL!!! This is totally unacceptable!"
Pros: "I think that I appreciated all the details during the trip. As I get my kayak app in my IPhone, i firstly received a notice that the check in started.... At each step, I could see the time discounted through my phone"
Cons: "As I said, I liked everything. From the departure to the landing"
Pros: "The planes and shuttles are nice and clean, and the staff are pleasant. I had a long layover in Kigali and the airline gave me accommodation and a food voucher (totally unexpected). Will definitely fly RwandAir again."
Pros: "Food and free WiFi. Ample seating space."
Cons: "Rerouted through Dar-es-Salaam at last minute rather than being a direct flight as scheduled"
Pros: "That there were not many people on the second leg and that the plane was clean"
Cons: "The fact that we had an itinerary change with an extra stop (unannounced until 15 minutes before I boarded the flight) that delayed us by 1+ hours, that we were delayed from leaving Kigali by 1.5 hours and none of the crew could explain what was going on, that the rwandair staff was rude. I mean... It's Rwanda so I didn't expect much customer service (they are generally particularly bad by African, European, Asian or American standards) and I definitely wasn't impressed"
Pros: "When we were unable to travel due to Corona Virus restrictions, Ethiopian gave us a full refund even though we had a non-refundable ticket, and they were lovely about it when they did it. A+, hope I'll get a chance to actually fly with them soon."
Cons: "Flight was delayed and caused me to miss my connecting flight on another airline that had no other flights that day. As a result of the lack of communication and general lack of professionalism, staff refused to rectify the situation and take responsibility, and I was forced to stay overnight. Worst"
Pros: "The flight was four hours delayed in Djibouti and there was absolutely zero, NO communication, whatsoever, provided by the Djibouti Ethiopian Airlines staff what was going on, how long the flight was going to be delayed, or if it was actually complete canceled for that evening."
Cons: "Flight ET365 was scheduled to leave Djibouti at 19:00 but did not leave until 23:30, without any screen information or by the Ethiopian Airlines staff at JIB airport how long the delay would be or if the flight was completely cancelled. Extremely unprofessional and ignorant handling of the situation"
Pros: "Fast gate work."
Cons: "Lost luggage and the food and silent movie option (no headphones provided for overhead movie)"
Pros: "The airline was quick to give vouchers for food and hotel when flight was delayed by 5 hours. They were also efficient in rebooking missed connecting flight."
Cons: "On top of a five hour delay that got me to my arrival point 14 hours behind schedule, my two checked bags were also lost and have not been found up to two days later. The food was like being on a Delta flight, and the entertainment screens in my entire row would not work, nor did many others."
Pros: "The crew practically ignored my request for medical aid. They were not friendly and super occupied. The seats were too uncomfortable."
Cons: "The food could have been better and the crew attention and assistance to the passengers."
Pros: "The crew were ok but took ages to help you"
Cons: "faster service in the plane"
Pros: "It was perfect to me , im in so much pain spiritually and you guys makes me feel home."
Cons: "Everything was good"
Pros: "Comfortable because the plane wasn't full."
Cons: "Check in and boarding was atrocious. We were told that we wouldn't be allowed to go to the gate if we didn't get through the check in but it wasn't our fault that it was taking so long. There weren't anywhere near enough staff and so by the time we managed to check in we had to go straight to the gate. Same thing when boarding. Took far too long and there was an inevitable delay with no apology. Plane ok. One toilet out of order so had to walk the length of the plane. Games no good without a handset and very few new movies."
Pros: "The staff was very helpful and friendly. They provided a hotel, meals, and transportation on a long layover."
Cons: "Transportation from the aircraft to terminals."

Customer service not the greatest my bags were left behind at JFK

Pros: "The seat was comfortable ONLY because I am Platinum member ( and I was able to choose emergency exit seat ) otherwise it wouldn’t have been so comfortable"
Cons: "Food"
Pros: "The crew amazing"
Cons: "I was traveling with a child and an infant. Would have been given a priority. We were in the queue waiting."
Cons: "Flight was 4 hours late making for a tight connection in Nairobi and our luggage not making the connection! No matter how good your service, if you don’t get the luggage through, you fail!"
Pros: "Yes the crew was amazing"
Cons: "Provide food for kids first before even the special meals people"
Pros: "The pilot on the airlines updated us that we were running 15 minutes late and would try to make up some time in the air. He also apologized on behalf of the crew for our delay and communicated that it was because the aircraft arrived late from the previous flight. I appreciated that clarification."
Cons: "Our flight was delayed by 3:15 hours, and our gate wasn't listed on the monitors. Our gate location changed twice, and the only way I found out was by asking the "Kenya Airways Guest Services desk" twice. The overhead announcement of the gate change happened 15 minutes after the boarding time listed"
Pros: "nothing always delay on schedule and angry to them as i didn't receive all my parcel on arrival"
Cons: "KQ needs to review everything and being better like 4 years ago, it was really the proud of Africa"
Cons: "It was way too hot. Our child was uncomfortable from the heat the entire trip."
Pros: "The crew was fantastic. The food was good as well."
Cons: "The delay was painful."
Pros: "Fairly comfortable, good food. Good service, friendly boarding crew."
Cons: "My luggage was moved from the overhead compartment to another compartment much further from where I was seated. I was not informed of this and was not aware. I had to wait for all the passengers to leave while the cabin crew searched for the back. This was most unpleasant and stressful."
