Let KAYAK do the searching
For those seeking to escape the freeways and crowded pavements of Los Angeles, there are a few different options, and many Los Angelinos will head down the coast to find an isolated stretch of beach, or even to the more relaxed pace of San Diego. Those in the know, however, will head just over 90 miles up the coast to Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara holidays are a good option for those who want to enjoy the Californian experience without wanting to base themselves in a big city.
This seaside town is easily accessed from neighbouring Los Angeles, but if you’re planning your Santa Barbara holidays without a car, then not to worry- there are multiple train services each day from Los Angeles, and you’ll get to arrive at the Spanish Mission style Santa Barbara Train Station. Once you’ve arrived, you can catch public transport to all the spots of interest, or if you’re feeling energetic- hire a bike. Many stores rent bikes to visitors and the city has endless miles of dedicated cycling paths. Since there are a fair few hills around the town, be careful about slopes.
Santa Barbara holidays are all about the sun, and this part of California enjoys almost year round sunshine, although the summer months of June until August are the most popular. Head up the Santa Ynez Mountains for the best view of the town and the Pacific Ocean and to take a look at the hilltop mansions in the area. Heading towards the ocean, you’ll pass through the relatively compact downtown area, arriving at Santa Barbara Harbour. Next to the harbour, you’ll find Steams Wharf- an old wooden pier where you can watch the sun go down before choosing where to go for dinner.
