FAQs - booking Cape Verde flights

  • Are there non-stop flights to Cape Verde?

You can take non-stop flights to Cape Verde from Gatwick Airport (LGW) in London, with there being direct routes to both Espargos Airport (SID) and Rabil Airport (BVC). You can also fly to San Pedro Airport (VXE) and Praia Nelson Mandela Airport (RAI), but these flights will require a stopover along the way. This transfer is often at Lisbon Airport (LIS).

  • Where can I find the car hire desks at Praia Nelson Mandela Airport?

Most car hire companies at Praia Nelson Mandela Airport have their offices conveniently located near the Baggage Claim area. You can book online with KAYAK, so that after you've collected your bags, all you have to do is head to the desk and present your paperwork. Vehicles are generally located on-site at the car park, which is within walking distance of the terminal.

  • Can I reduce my carbon emissions when flying?

You can reduce your impact on the environment when you fly by choosing an airline that emits less carbon dioxide during the flight. For instance, if you are flying from London to Espargos Airport (SID), then you could fly with TAP AIR Portugal, which operates this route producing 26% less CO2 than the industry standard. Rather than emitting 965 kg CO2 per passenger, it emits 714 kg CO2 per passenger.

  • Are there taxis available at Praia Nelson Mandela Airport?

You will usually find plenty of taxis available at the airport, and can expect to pay around CVE 1000 (about GBP 7.80) to get from the airport to the city centre. This is generally the standard fare, regardless of where in the city you’re heading. There may also be an additional charge for luggage.

  • Which UK airports have a fast-track service?

If you are flying from a UK airport to Cape Verde, you can skip the queues ahead of your flight. This tends to cost £5 at all airports apart from at Heathrow Airport where it is about £12.50.

  • Are there buses at Praia Nelson Mandela Airport?

Unfortunately, there is no official public transport service offering buses from the airport to Praia. However, there are sometimes informal transport services, similar to buses, which carry larger groups of people. These are usually less expensive than taxis, with a minimum fare of roughly CVE 100 (approximately GBP 0.78). Your hotel may also offer a complimentary shuttle.

Maio doesn't have an international airport, so if you're flying from the UK, you'll need to arrive at Praia Nelson Mandela Airport. From here, you can take a connecting domestic flight to Maio Airport (MMO), which takes around 20 minutes. These flights are usually operated by Bestfly Cabo Verde. Alternatively, you can take a ferry between Praia and Maio which takes roughly 2 h 30 min.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Cape Verde

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Cape Verde flight deals.
  • British citizens do not need a visa to travel to Cape Verde as they will be granted a 30-day tourist visa upon arrival. You will need to pay the airport security tax before you arrive though, which can be done online. This costs in the region of 3400Esc (£30). Your passport also needs to be valid for at least six months from when you enter the country.
  • Turnhouse Airport (EDI) and Manchester Airport (MAN) both offer one-stop flights to multiple Cape Verde Airports including Sal, Praia Nelson Mandela Airport (RAI) and San Vicente. Most other major UK airports involve at least two stops and may involve self-transfers.
  • For those that are heading to Cape Verde for carnival, then you will find that flight costs tend to increase around this time. Held on the same day as Shrove Tuesday each year, the week prior to this date also tends to be full of festivities. If you are not planning on attending the event, then it is probably better to travel during an alternative week to save money.
  • As Cape Verde was a Portuguese colony between 1462 and 1975, Portugal's flag carrier TAP Air operates frequent flights between Portugal and Cape Verde. There are relatively few direct flights between the UK and Cape Verde, so you'll often find the cheapest flights offered by TAP Air, as they also frequently operate flights between the UK and Portugal. These flights frequently stop at their main hub, Lisbon Airport (LIS) and depart from London Heathrow (LHR), London Gatwick (LGW), Manchester and Edinburgh.
  • If you’re planning on hiring a car once you arrive at an airport in Cape Verde, then you need to make sure that you’re up-to-date with the rules of the road. For instance, everyone in the car needs to wear a seat belt. Whilst there are no rules for children, it is advised that any child under the age of 12 or smaller than 150cm is in a suitable child seat, especially if in the front seat.
  • TAP Air, Royal Air Maroc and TUI Airways allow passengers to bring 10 kg of cabin luggage for this route. TAP Air includes up to 23 kg of checked luggage on Basic Economy fare. If you fly with TUI checked luggage must be booked separately. Royal Maroc Air usually allows two pieces of checked luggage that weigh up to 23 kg each.
  • If you want to visit the tourist attraction of Shark Bay in Sal, Cape Verde, then you should fly to Espargos Airport (SID). From the terminal building it is only about a 13min drive to the shark conservation area.

The plane was so hot upon boarding. Their boarding process was so unnecessarily long. Service was subpar.

Flight was delayed for 4 hours and they misplaced my luggage too. Appalling.

Horrible experience. I was apparently picked at random for a security screening - that was the most demeaning experience I have had in my life with a guy poking and prodding and having me take off my shoes, move up my pants so he could swab my legs - telling me I couldn't bring more than some quantity of cookies - I had 3 boxes of cookies in my luggage. In the end he did let me keep them but that was really uncalled for. Harrassment in the name of security.

Everything was on time and efficient - expected from a Swiss crew. But the entertainment system was pretty bad - the display was old. Food was pretty bad and a couple of times they started serving drinks and then just skipped past my row (and likely several others)

They went out of their way. It was very clean and friendly.

I was pleasantly surprised with the whole experience. Thank you

Swiss Air rerouted me at the last minute and lost my luggage. At this time they still have not been able to locate it.

Cons: "Reckless and inconsiderate airline. The only carrier refusing to modify travel due to Covid-19 pandemic"
Cons: "A solution to the seat problem. If the seat only reclined 1/2 the distance they do now, the flight would be enjoyable."
Pros: "Seats were comfortable"
Cons: "Please make an announcement to passengers to not be dismissive if their surroundings. Passenger in front of me was has no regard for people behind him. Kept throwing himself in seat aggressively which cause water/food on trail to fall over. Thanks"

Perfect although it took an hour to board the plane but other than that it was great

O comissário não nos serviu bebida no jantar. Quando voltou somente serviu água.

Very little space between chairs, making any long travel very uncomfortable. Food is also very basic.

The flight was good, but not entertainment or free food or drinks were offered.

Of course food only if you pay and no entertainment. As always with TAP they collected hand luggage and you must check in. This happens mostly with TAP and is not acceptable because others are having three pieces or more. TAP should be consequent and collect hand luggage only from those who have more than one piece.

Cons: "The flight wasn't full but still had some people seated next to each other. Flights should allow for social distancing right now"
Cons: "Business class food is a disgrace. On the way to Lisbon they had at least some warm meal, skipped now and just got a box with bad, cold food. The crew was apologetic."
Cons: "It was delayed on our way to destination. Also wish it was a direct flight to ponta delgado instead of going through lisbon. It was too much back and forth."
Pros: "TAP always has great team members and crew. They are polite, professional and helpful. The flight itself is comfortable and relaxing; very enjoyable."
Cons: "TAP does not check your bags all the way through if you are having a layover. This makes NO SENSE and requires that you retrieve your luggage from baggage claim, and then check in once more and then another trip through security once again! This never happens in the US - one of the few things we get right. Also, I have never had to board a plan from the tarmac since 1970 in the US - why do we have to always wait for and take buses from our check in gate out to the flight line? And how is this ever considered, "Premium Boarding?" It's like a cattle car. Fix these things and I will sing the praises of TAP forever."
Pros: "TAP is great to fly, friendly, safe and solid, nice crew"

Flight was ok. Food on way there great a pork dish way back tuna and pasta was not good. Flight attendants were great. Wish they had more soda options like ginger ale seltzer water. Good experience overall. Worst part of trip was car rental Klass company car broke down we were on side of road late night 4 hours awful awful experience all they wanted was 500 euros for help to come absolutely horrible experience we were scared side of highway they offered zero help!

Coming from USA it was nice to be treated nice for a change. Even though our flight was pretty short we were served breakfast. On time flight with very caring staff. Please teach American carriers how to treat people.

More space between seats and in bathroom. I don’t think there was any entertainment offered. If there was, I wasn’t aware.

Every meal/snack included something with ham/pork - even the cookies had "swine fat" (which we only knew because we thoroughly checked the ingredients). There were no vegetarian options, and we had not been given the option of pre-selecting a meal when purchasing our tickets or checking in. That made for a VERY long flight. We were fortunate that we had brought our own snacks as back-up.

Waited in line for hours just to get a boarding pass which would not print at the kiosk or load on my iPhone. Waiting again for about 45 minutes to get through passport control. Poorly managed airport. The flight and crew were great and the flight was very comfortable.

I booked and paid for my original flight with E-Dreams. Also made seat selections. Got an email a few days later saying my return flight had be cancelled?? Called E-Dreams and they said it was the airline that cancelled (Sato)? Told to rebook the return flight myself? Cost was double the original flight and was booking me on the same flight as I originally booked?? Called back, the agent agreed to cancel my flight to the Azores and AGREED to a full REFUND. The agent advised me to re-book the flight on my own. Did so and ended up with the EXACT same flights as originally booked?? Have only received a PARTIAL REFUND. Still out approximately $300 dollars?? Is this a SCAM. How do I get the remaining REFUND?? Regards, Brett Parry

I wasn't able to log into the onboard wifi entertainment, but I fell asleep on the flight anyway.

Cons: "Paid for business and Seats did not recline, not was there any entertainment provided from a flight from Lisbon Portugal to Boston. This was not a business international flight although it was sold and advertised as one. Awful."
Cons: "I paid for business and there were no TVs or any entertainments from Portugal to Boston on Airbus 321. The seats barely reclined so basically I was charged for business and got a premium economy seat. They do not have a business section, never flying with them again."
Pros: "Cheap aitfare"
Cons: "On time takeoff Better food Television screens to watch movies Better selection of movies"

The flight was delayed over 2 hours, we should off left the plane2 late passengers as it’s not fair on everyone who’s followed the rules.

Dreamliner. Yes great if maintained. I didn't see anyones screen work consistently during either of our flights. Worse was their ability to not only dump you out of premium but separate couples and seat someone's carer at the opposite end of the aircraft. This poor gentleman had no hand so his partner who assists him, being seated at the other end of the aircraft, well that really showed us all what Tui think :( It was fairly dire all in all, they advertise all the perks of the dreamliner only in reality you don't have the features and they change the windows and colours to suit their constant sales pitches. Ironically they were so low on stock for the return flight that all their sales pitches were a waste of time! Their contract only favours them and 'operational changes' well they cover every excuse and Tui use it. Surprisingly we haven't reinstalled the Tui app or booked with them since. It's a shame as I rated them highly during the pandemic.

One flight attendant not wearing a mask over nose, 50% of passengers not either, and no effort to correct. Boarding was very late with no information - lots of standing around waiting.

Good but your male staff should be more appreciative of customers. After all you are making a lot of monies from Nigerians.

The head of the flight attendants was very rude and impolite and insisted to know my nationality on flight while I had my Can passeport! against all rules!

Really was disappointed in flying in business class starting from lounge which was the worst lounge every Flight almost 6 hours flight the airplane is sooooooo old not comfortable at all food was awful no tv seats was uncomfortable can’t even charge your phone to play any entertainment

I spent 4 hours untill get my bags no food no entertainment on the flight

Adequate. Served our purpose of getting there safely. Nothing to rave about. Decent value for the amount paid

Bad service in la RAM from beginning to end. The crew ladies are impolite and rude and insensitive to passengers requests. I do not recommend traveling with Royal Air Maroc (La RAM) - worst service.

Nothing. Everything, the service the delayed plane and communications to passengers, the boarding, the food access before flight, no aircon on the plane until high altitudes and super long wait for baggage claim with no direction on tv signs.

Pros: "I liked nothing about this airline. Lucky I am life… Just when we took off , the pilot announced an engine failure, we returned to Marrakech airport waiting for information instead we were walked around the another from gate to gate, yet still no information. At 3:30 PM we were told that there is no flight that day. They put us in hotel at 8:30 PM. I am at the hotel at this time without information regarding the next flight . This is the worst airline I ever used in my life, not even some sort of customer service."
Cons: "Expel ROYAL AIR MAROC from your list of offers Punish them for treating travelers like garbage. I expect a refund from the price I paid"
Pros: "The flight was on time. Luggage was handled well. Coach seats were okay with decent space. I had read some negative reviews but our experience was satisfactory."
Cons: "Customer service could have been better but they did do their job getting us there."
Cons: "Flight was delayed by an hour and a half and no announcements were made"
