Scores according to KAYAK customer reviews
Pros: "Comfy seat"
Cons: "Less salt in the food"
Pros: "The Xiamen reps at the SGN airport was insensitive and arrogant. We were not able to board because of a misunderstanding on the China visa-free program. I still fully believe they are wrong. I had to book 2 new one way tickets with China Southern and wait all day at the airport."
Cons: "Helpful, courteous, and well-informed Xiamen representatives."
Pros: "Great airplane (787 Dreamliner), comfortable seats, lots of meals, no charge for beer & wine"
Cons: "IMO, the flight attendants should understand better english. It was clear they didn't understand much. I had to claim checked bags and recheck every flight segment. No abilty to reserve seats unless it was more than 72 hours before departing!"
Pros: "The plane was very new. Good movies and tv shows."
Cons: "The pineapple went bad...and it was just served. Also a tiny pastry, it had a flavor that the nuts had been sitting for a while."
Pros: "Crew was amazing. Welcoming, helpful and caroming to passengers needs."
Cons: "Replace worn out seats."
Pros: "Very responsible and kind cabin crew. We were delayed by maybe 8-10 hours because of weather. The crew would have to work all night, but were very kind about the situation."
Cons: "Short flight; so there was no real in-flight entertainment. That's really alright though."
Cons: "The seats don't even recline, so I could not lie back to rest. The entertainment system was very bad, didn't provide earphones and could barely see the screen. I would not choose to fly this airline again."
Cons: "The flight left before we get there. I had to book a train ticket to my final destination because I have to be in Fuzhou that day. I was told by the airline that I would be reimbursed the air fare from Xiamen to Fuzhou."
Pros: "I liked playing tetris and pacman with a controller that was like that of a console. My flight had a lot of empty seats, and I noticed they staggered the seating so that there was nobody in front of me or behind me. Flight crew was genuinely nice and helpful even though we didn't speak the same language. The little cup holder was actually pretty cool. There even seemed to be ample leg room compared to other Chinese international flights I've been on. I've flown previously with china southern and China eastern, so that is my basis for comparison."
Cons: "They didn't give me boarding passes for both flights (had a long layover in china). Other airlines printed both at the start of trip. This added quite a bit of confusion for me, seemingly unnecessarily. Also, I'm a bit disappointed in their free hotel room deal for long layovers. When I had a long layover previously with either china southern or china easter (can't remember which one), I got my own free hotel room, a free meal, and a free ride to and from the hotel. That was a real perk for my 12 hour layover. The deal with xiaman is you get a free hotel room, but you have to share it with a stranger of the same gender, and you have to pay for taxi to and from the hotel. Although you do supposedly get a free meal, I chose not to take them up on the hotel offer. Instead I took them up on their transfers lounge. This is a dark, quiet room full of dingy, dirty padded chairs and people sprawled out and snoring. I would have stayed more than 15 minutes if there were more phone charging plugs, but instead I went and ate mcdonalds and found a plug in at the kfc. Aside from all that, I would suggest getting some better Hollywood movies to choose from, as xiamen's competition has them beat there as well, in my opinion."
Cons: "The flights got delayed. One of the flights got delayed without a notice in advance."
Pros: "Finally getting a flight the next day"
Cons: "My seat was given to someone even though I still had time to make the connection."
Pros: "crew was nice"
Cons: "food was dry"
Pros: "Empty seats"
Cons: "Everything else. Staff was rude and did not speak English, food was terrible, and the airport was very confusing. We had a 4 hour layover at Xiamen airport and instead of going straight to our gate, they made us go through immigration, then transfer services, then back through immigration. We landed at 5am, the transfer services open at 6, then check in opens at 6:50, but we weren’t allowed to check in until 8am because our flight was at 10am. We basically stood in line without anyone giving clear instructions and waited at different line ups for 1 hour each. Horrible airplane, horrible airport. Never transferring here again."
Cons: "Airplane was loud not with crying babies but passengers yelling over one another. Food was mediocre, and plane had no entertainment consoles."
Pros: "Plane was new and clean. Flight crew was very friendly. Liked the mood lighting during the flight. Good selection of films to watch during the long flight."
Cons: "The food was okay but they ran out of selection a couple of times so I had no choice what to eat. But that’s it nothing else I didn’t like. Really good airline."
Pros: "Very good service. I have a bad knee and they did a good job of helping. Long layover is ok, they offer free hotel. Side benefit you can be a tourist for a short time."
Cons: "Lounge could be improved. Does not compare to other Airlines Lounges."
Pros: "Price and flight were great. Communicating was small problem. 5 am arrival nothing open so couldn't change money for food, taxi etc. Finally found an ATM that worked. People used their cell phones to try and communicate."
Cons: "Some obstacles with early morning arrival and communications"
Pros: "The flight crew was kind..really hard working.."
Cons: "I was not informed before hand I needed a visa to enter China..Xiamen international airport does not have transit lounge...so leaving on the 6 December from Lax to Xiamen ..I was denied to fly Xiamen so they scrambled last minute an put me on China southern airlines...upon return from Singapore I had to pay for Chinese visa since I was to return through Xiamen...it was a nightmare"
Pros: "I liked the plane. 787’s are the smoothest rides."
Cons: "Xiamen Airlines should be applauded for having a direct flight from LA to Qingdao. But they have a lot to learn about the proper service and materials in business class. Not surprisingly, they have gone for the cheapest way to service the customer. Lot to learn."
Pros: "Nice wide seats, well run flight. Lots of food served, though very mixed quality. The unfortunate experiences described in the negatives of this review, do not repeat on the return flight."
Cons: "In the fine print is the fact that the flight includes a stop in Shenzen. On the outbound flight this was a nightmare experience with Chinese immigration. Exhausted from a 14 hour flight, passengers had their passports taken away; were put through a bizarre 45 minute finger printing process using machines that did not work; and then left to wait for an hour or more with no information. The continuation flight was in another part of the airport - a very long walk; and it turned out not to be at the departing gate that was displayed on the monitors. We arrived at the indicated (wrong) gate with no guidance. Very nearly missed the continuation flight. Once in Xiamen, our arrival was late enough that the second floor of the airport was closed. There were no ATMs on the first floor; no way to get the Chinese cash needed to take a taxi to the airport. Fortunately a kind citizen agreed to exchange some cash, using mental calculations and sign language about the exchange rate."
Pros: "Crew from lax to xiamen were good they took care of my meal from xiamen to bkk . They offered me their food which was pretty generous of them"
Cons: "I called 24 hrs prior to my flight to ask for Vegetarian meal but that was not available... There was so much problem with food . And the toilets were very very dirty :("
Pros: "The food was surprisingly good. I would have expected some of it from a restaurant, not an airline. The in-seat entertainment was functional and had a lot of things to watch and games to play."
Cons: "Nothing really. We have to keep in mind that an airline can only do so much to help us get through flights that are many hours long. This Xiamen flight was about as good as I can imagine a long international flight could be."
Pros: "The food was good and staff was friendly"
Cons: "I was denied a boarding pass and was not allowed to transit through China, because of a visa that was needed I was not told about by Kayak.com. Therefore, being the last day I was allowed to stay in Thailand, I had to scramble to find an outbound flight the same day, including paying almost double the cost of the original flight. The Thai check-in agent told me to never transit through mainland China again, because the visa requirement information that is not provided."
Pros: "no regards for customers"
Cons: "no regards for customers"
Pros: "Crew was super friendly, professional and excellent!"
Cons: "The 10 hour layover :("
Cons: "I missed the connecting flight and was rerouted on a Nov 2, 8:35am China Southern flight from Guangzhou to Manila"
Pros: "Crew was friendly."
Cons: "couldn't book through from Shenzhen yp Guilin. Had to check-in again at Fuzhou and go through security again."
Pros: "all of the Xiamen staff were really great."
Cons: "Nothing that I disliked."
Pros: "Flight Attendants were nice a professional Seats comfortable Meal size was quite large for economy Domestic"
Cons: "Check In Agent said my ticket was incorrect? Had to go to about three different desks with very limited English. Had a baggage overage that I was happy to pay for but would have had to go to another desk to pay. Would have missed my flight. Hand carried 8 pieces of dry cleaning through the Airport. Not customer saavy or friendly."
Pros: "They redirected me to other carriers"
Cons: "Show up and the flight was delayed 4 hours. No reason given. My layover in Xiamen was only 2 hours. They kept wanting me to fly the next day. When I complained loud enough they finally yielded and found an alternative to LAX."
Pros: "Service in flight was great ! Meals were surprisingly tast and the seatback entertainment was well equipped for the 13 hour journey"
Cons: "Since the airline is so small, they don't schedule agents for check-in prior to a couple hours before boarding. That was a bit frustrating when we wanted to be at the gate early."
Pros: "In-flight service were adequate. Not much offer for alcoholic beverages. Staff not much English speaking."
Cons: "Xiamen is very bad for transit passenger. 3 immigration check points 3 security baggage checks Has to pick up boarding pass with long lines. Cannot reserve seat on line."
Pros: "on time food"
Cons: "no movies"
Pros: "Their price"
Cons: "Delays, delays and more delays. Then cancellations after!!!"
Cons: "The staff was rude and the flight was delayed twice."
Pros: "The entertainment system the company provides for international flights is very nice. Movies and games keep you entertained."
Cons: "Flight was Shanghai to Fuzhou, 10 hour layover and Fuzhou to JFK. Our flight from Shanghai to Fuzhou was delayed for 3 hours for "inclement weather" - it was clear in Shanghai. Flight company communicated to progressive, who the flight was booked through, that the flight would be an hour late, so I received a text saying new departure time would be an hour later. This was false. After that hour the only messages we were getting at the airport were "flight is delayed, new departure time will be announced later". We arrived in Fuzhou 3 hours later, at 0300. The bus ride to the hotel provided by the airline is one hour each way, and our connecting flight was 0900, so it was a waste of time to try to get to the hotel. This means we just stayed in the airport all night and boarded our next 15 hour flight with no sleep, no shower and nothing to eat. Customer service for flight would announce turbulence every 3 minutes, even after plane was having turbulence for 10-15 minutes. This freezes entertainment. Etc etc. many other small disorganized things as well."
Cons: "Was just a bit warm"
Pros: "The flight from JFK to Fuzhou was enjoyable. Plenty of leg room and the entertainment kept me occupied throughout the flight. The food was excellent. They provide 2 full meals, 1 half meal and a snack, where I wasn't hungry at all throughout the 14+ hr flight."
Cons: "It was almost impossible to get in touch with an English speaking representative. I tried to call to confirm my booking that I made through kayak.com. When I got in touch, the rep from an overseas office barely spoke English and didn't help at all. Thankfully everything worked out at the airport. Found out that JFK-FOC is only 2 months old. Hopefully they"
Pros: "The company that Kayak use for my ticket (Yayama) had some random passport number on my reservation. The ticket agent told me that I had to call to travel agent to get it changed. I tried to call three times (from China) and all three time I was put on hold to 10 to 15 minutes then disconnected. I finally got someone at the service desk to call the airline and get the passport number correct. This added over an hour to my check in process. Luckily, I arrive early and was able to make the flight, no help from Yayama. Terrible!!!!"
Pros: "Airline was great, staff was nice and attentive. Entertainment was great although the airline will not let you use your cell phone even on airplane mode. I couldn't listen to a book I had downloaded."
Cons: "Bathrooms needed to be cleaned. Changing flights in China was stressful and confusing. You have to go through immigration and my experience was stressful."
Cons: "The fact that I was not able to get on my flight because I didn't have a visa after I called the airline over a week before my flight to ask about it and they told me I didn't need one. They told me I would get a temporary 72 visa upon arrival in Fuzhou but when I went to check in this was not the case. Now they won't give me any money back for that flight or the one I had to buy to get home. It was their fault I was not on the flight and they won't own up to it. I will never fly with them and I will do my best to let others know that they shouldn't either"
Pros: "I liked how much space I had when I was on the plane, the meal and thw drink was good."
Cons: "There was no automatic check in online or no place to check where to flight to, for exampleT3 or T4 to the building. For foreigners, this is a big deal because I felt lost and uncomfortable. And there was not a very good reminder of the flight. The ususal reminder should be send out within 24 hours, however, it didn't show on the first trip and it popped up when return but 4 or 5 hours to the flight. This need to be changed!!!"
Pros: "For as complicates as the process is, they make it very easy for you! There are representatives at every turn to make sure you get through customs and on to your next flight. I also got lucky with all 4 flights I had. I had my own row on one and never had someone next to me in the middle seat. Pretty nice for such long flights! I also kept quite entertained playing Texas Hold 'em on the entertainment system."
Cons: "Food was so-so Most flight attendants spoke English well, but not all - there was some confusion about wine vs. water."
Pros: "Great service, frequent meals and beverage services. Constantly checked in with me to see if I needed anything, comfortable seats, and plenty of movies available for lengthy flights. Xiamen airlines does offer a free hotel service for people that are experiencing their 12+ hour layover, but this is always based on double occupancy and the passenger needs to pay for the taxi fair to and from."
Cons: "When flying to Xiamen, we had to have a quick layover in Shenzen for some reason, that didn't seem necessary. This airline plans on getting rid of this stop, but on top of that the layover in Xiamen is a bit excessive. Besides that, great airlines."
