FAQs - booking Kathmandu flights

  • Which airlines fly to Kathmandu?

Many major airlines serve Kathmandu, including Emirates, Qatar Airways, KLM, Air India and Turkish Airlines. As there are no direct flights to Kathmandu available from the UK, your journey will include a layover in your airline’s hub city, for example Dubai, Qatar or Istanbul.

  • What kind of services does Kathmandu Tribhuvan Airport offer?

Kathmandu Airport is quite small and basic in the services it offers, the majority of which are in the Departures zone. Besides a few snack bars, you will find one duty-free shop and some stalls selling local handicrafts, souvenirs and postcards. There is a post office in the International Terminal (landside) and a few charging stations in the International Departures zone. As in all other airports, you will find toilet facilities, however you may need to provide your own toilet paper and soap.

  • Is there a lounge I can access at Kathmandu Airport?

Travellers on flights to Kathmandu who are looking for a place to relax away from the bustle of the airport can do so in the Executive Lounge, located landside on the 2nd Floor of the International Terminal. The lounge offers meals, snacks, drinks, newspapers and a television and is open daily from 06:00 to 23:00. Economy passengers may access the lounge by pre-booking a pass online or paying a fee on the door if there is space.

  • How much is a taxi from Kathmandu Tribhuvan Airport to the city centre?

Pre-paid, metered and non-metered taxis are available round the clock at Kathmandu Airport, all with varying rates. To get to the city centre, you can expect to pay around 550-1000 NPR (3.50-6.50 GBP) in a pre-paid taxi or 400-600 NPR (2.50-4 GBP) in a metered taxi. If you choose a non-metered taxi, you will need to negotiate a fare with the driver before getting in.

  • Can I exchange currency at Kathmandu Airport?

If you need some local currency after your flight to Kathmandu – a good idea if you plan to use a taxi or public transport to complete your journey – you will find a currency exchange counter downstairs in the International Arrivals Hall. An ATM is also available just outside the airport, to the right-hand side as you exit the terminal.

  • Are direct flights to Kathmandu available from the UK?

Direct flights to Kathmandu are not available from UK airports. Instead, Kathmandu flights usually involve a single layover, often in the United Arab Emirates. If you fly to Kathmandu from Manchester Airport with Qatar Airways, you will change planes at Doha International Airport. Meanwhile, if you fly from London Gatwick or from Birmingham Airport with Emirates, you will stopover at Dubai Airport.

  • Can I reduce my carbon emissions on Kathmandu flights?

If you’re concerned about your carbon footprint, you can cut your emissions by more than 50% if you fly to Kathmandu from London Heathrow with Air India. This route involves a single layover in Delhi. You can also lower your emissions by flying from Manchester Airport with multiple airlines. However, this will require you to make several stops before you land in Kathmandu and may be slightly more expensive than more direct routes.

  • What is the cheapest flight to Kathmandu?

In the last 5 days, the cheapest flight deal to Kathmandu was found on the route from Manchester, at £623 return. The most popular connection is from London to Kathmandu, while KAYAK users have found return deals for as low as £682 in the last 5 days.

  • What is the name of Kathmandu’s airport?

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket to Kathmandu?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a flight to Kathmandu is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights to Kathmandu?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket. You could then fly to Kathmandu with an airline and back with another airline.

  • What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight to Kathmandu?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying to Kathmandu up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Kathmandu

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Kathmandu flight deals.
  • The first thing that you will notice when arriving at Kathmandu Tribhuvan Airport (KTM) is the mountainous scenery surrounding it. Travellers on flights to Kathmandu from Europe and countries to the West will usually find the best views from the left-hand side of the plane.
  • Kathmandu Tribhuvan Airport is divided into two terminals: International and Domestic. Situated side by side, it is easy to walk between the two (even with luggage), although some porter touts may try to claim that it isn’t.
  • When claiming your baggage at Kathmandu Airport, you will need to show the portion of your luggage tag that was attached to your boarding pass – make sure you don’t throw this away before you have left the terminal building! Luggage trolleys are available at baggage reclaim and free to use.
  • Feeling hungry when you arrive at Kathmandu Tribhuvan Airport? The majority of food outlets at the airport – largely limited to snack bars – are in the Departures section, but there is one Airport Restaurant in the terminal building. Some shops also sell sandwiches, tea and coffee.
  • Weary travellers arriving on long flights to Kathmandu may want nothing more than to sleep and fortunately, there are several hotels more or less opposite the airport. The Hotel Meridian Suite, the Regal Airport Hotel, the Summit Residency and the Palagya Hotel are all 2min drive away from Kathmandu Tribhuvan Airport – it is worth booking a free shuttle transfer to avoid crossing a busy major road on foot.
  • If you are travelling further into the city and prefer using public transport, green public buses connect the airport to the city centre at irregular intervals. The price for a one-way ticket is 20 NPR (0.15 GBP).
  • If you’re booked on flights to Kathmandu, make sure that you have checked the country’s up-to-date visa requirements with Nepal’s Department of Immigration. You can get a visa on arrival in Nepal by filling out a Tourist Visa form at Kathmandu Airport and an Arrival Card, which will be given to you during your flight. You must also have a valid British Passport with more than 6 months of ongoing validity.
  • Charging stations for phones and other devices are available in the Arrivals area at Kathmandu Airport. These stations have universal plug sockets so you don’t need to search through your bags for an adaptor.
  • If you want quick flights to Kathmandu from UK airports, it is advisable to fly from London Heathrow with Air India. Flights on this route take just under 12h. If you want quick flights that are slightly cheaper, you could also fly from Manchester Airport or from London Heathrow Airport with Qatar Airways. Flights on this route usually take just over 13h and include one layover.

The quality of food is going down comparing with old history of excellent food. It was cold and a bad quality. The crew is always excellent and caring.

The journey was nice, all the crews were very good and services are excellent

Great flight - Clubhouse met our needs, and the staff provided good service. Boarding felt a little chaotic, but given the size of the aircraft, it's always going to be challenging. Whilst the crew were friendly, the number of passengers meant that we received our breakfast items, but had finished breakfast before we were served a drink. Lunch was much better organised, and throughout the flight, the crew were attentive. Found the seats and ICE to be excellent. Disembarkation was fine, and everything possible to expedite the process was being done.

We loved flying with Emirates in business class, the staff were fabulous, going above & beyond

The seating is spaced out nicely, The crew could have offer more drinks.

Excellent comfort and entertainment. Service poor..Food average with little choice.

Comfort good. Service as usual poor. Cabin temperature as usual too cold, about 15 degrees

Fresh energetic and friendly crew, great food, brand new plane and non stop entertainment

The food was pretty good and the crew were excellent. It would have been excellent all round but for screaming children. Six hours at least of a 10 hr flight. Mostly 1 child clearly on the spectrum and probably ADHD but I really felt for the parents and grandparents who were obviously struggling and doing the best they could under the circumstances. No reflection on the airline of course and we all need to be more tolerant with these challenges . Slept for 15 hrs when I got home.

No entertainment u less you pay. Wish there were some free movies

Food could of been a bit more premium, but everything was excellent. LOVED the innovative boarding drinks and terrific service!

Staff could have been friendlier and offered drinks more often

They have adopted a crazy "no paper boarding passes at all cost policy". We spent half an our at the checkin stall – my elderly mother and her grandchildren were flying. She had no phone reception for some reason (besides being an inexperienced smartphone user), the kids had dumbphones, And they still won't issue a paper boarding pass. We had to do a lengthy dance with getting the boarding pass SMS on my phone and transferring them to her phone via WiFi. This was horrible, honestly. I can't imagine how they could manage it without me being there. Trees (and airline profits) should be less important than people.

Staff friendly. Business class but issue with flat bed. Incoming Turkish flight delayed. Made connection due to fast buggy but luggage did not make it. Confusion at Delhi airport

With a 4 hour delay its was a very basic flight which was just bearable. We were offered food vouchers for the delay and then they didnt work, so that was annoying. Also poor communication about the delay which got pushed out 3 times.

Very good overall.... apart from the cost of extra check ed in luggage where they charge £17 per kg, and no option to just buy an extra bag allowance (at least on the route I took)

Very old plane on the Istanbul to Bangkok flight, had an emergency exit isle row, no where to put anything, on a plus point loads of leg room. Food was the best I have had in 39 years of flying.

It was a nightmare. I booked business class ticket from Ediburgh to Beirut via Istanbul to attend a funeral. I had a wonderful experience flying to Istanbul from Edinburgh. Then I could not get a boarding pass issued to Beirut. It seems that although they booked me and I had a reservation number, I had no seat allocated and the flight was full. I was asked to go from one desk to another and made to wait for 2 hours. I missed my flight as I did not have a seat assigned and it was full. The only option was to put me on the next flight, 6 hours later, for a fee of over $400. They said that was the best they can do to 'help me' and to 'take it or leave it'. Well, I was not about to be bullied; I stood my ground. I booked and paid premium for the journey, which was confirmed. The eventually accepted to not charge me extra and i waited a total of over 8 hours in the airport with no compensation. On top of my grief with the risk of missing the funeral service, I had to put up with their indifference and condescending attitude. They spoke about me in Turkish thinking I would not understand (I hold a British passport) in front of me. When they eventually handed my passport and boarding pass back to me, I showed them I was born in Istanbul and that I understood everything and said a condescending 'thank you' back to them in Turkish. You should have seen their faces. I said that consumers have rights and it is a shame that Turkish Airlines does not have good customer service to at least acknowledge and apologize for errors committed by the airline. Blaming the me, the client, for such an error and placing unreasonable ultimatums, rudeness and dismissiveness to be rid of me, particularly when I was vulnerable and visibly grieving was really shocking... The airline taints the city of Istanbul and the people of Türkiye. Such a shame.

A good airline, but at checking in, they allocated seats for my wife, and I far away from each other, and to change them, they wanted a payment, such a bad policy, it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth All was good on the plane, good food, but the air hostess was abrupt and a bit rough dealing with the passengers, but one has to find excuses for staff working under pressure

I found it okay. Did not think the food was that great. And the service could have been better. Seat was a little cramped. Delay getting to Istanbul made me rush all the way across the airport to get to the connection. This was a not good experience.

Terrible experience resolving missed connection after flight was delayed. 3 hour queue at transit desk, not enough staff, no organisation, worst ever flying experience.

The rows of seats in economy class are seriously close to one another making eating and resting just about impossible - there is hardly any legroom. Anyone larger than average size would have an incredibly uncomfortable flight. I had to basically share my seat with the lady passenger next to me as she was too big to fit into her allotted seat.

Food was good, attendants were friendly. Seats were not comfortable. Did not receive any amenities such as eyemask or earplugs that would have helped sleep. Additionally a large group of passengers boarded very late into boarding and were a disruption for almost the whole flight. Flight attendants did their best but the kids were making so much noise, kicking seats, and half the time no adult was sat with them so they weren’t being managed.

I staff or crew they were very friendly and humbly, they done theirs service very well, I appreciate them and thank you to the company or Qatar 🇶🇦 Government for providing as good service in their flight ,once again, thank you 😊 🙏 😀 😉 👍

Crews are very rude and unhelpful. Cramped seats in economy. Foods are useless

Lovely aircraft and I flight entertainment. Good leg room. Full flight crew struggled a bit

The flight was quite comfortable for a 12 hour flight! Food was excellent. The service was good, the entertainment was fine. All in all, one of the better long-haul flights I’ve experienced.

Food not good as good as last time flew with them

Seats very uncomfortable, impossible to sleep. Food average, bakery items not fresh. Pockets in seats not large enough to hold a book and a few other items. Cabin temperature too cold, even with blanket. Good selection of movies. Other than that 12 hours of torture!

Didn't have internet connection, and the flight was over booked.

Kuwait Airways is one of the airlines that has entered into competition with other carriers and has become distinguished in the quality of its services. However, it still requires further development, particularly in its digital services related to airport operations and in-flight entertainment. I believe that over the coming years, Kuwait Airways may reach a highly competitive level in terms of the services it provides.

Are you KIDDING RIGHT NOW?!? SENDING OUT SURVEYS FOR CANCELED FLIGHTS IN A CONFLICT ZONE?!? ARE YOU FEELING OK???

Food is terrible, service is not good. Staff were not personable and rushed food service.

The onboarding was extremely confusing. Had to climb the stairs to plan from tarmac with carryon bags in hand. No apologies for inconvenience. Overall not quite pleasant experience.

Next time im going to use Kuwait air lines, hopefully

Comfortable seats. Be aware there is no alcohol on this airline.

It was very nice flight only suggestions to upload recent videos and English subtitles. Thanks

Everybody was so nice to treat me good all the workers When I came to Bangladesh there was just a little problem with the luggage but I got my luggage it took like two hours Other than that everything is good

Everything was great specially the seats was comfortable even I was in the economy and the food was really Great👍

The crew was attentive and kind. The business class cabin wasn’t very full during the flight so the service was catered to your specific needs.

Very old aircraft. Business class seats don’t work right. No way to get out my tray table. Crew didn’t seem surprised about the aircraft and didn’t have any real answers. Old 777 seems to not have been updated ever.

Aircraft condition poor, no inflight entertainment, broken seats, seats worn, split armrests, flat seat cushions and seat would recline. Aircraft needs refitting completely!

Poor hygiene in the lavatories. Limited control of passengers who often were up standing around my seat talking loudly with their friends.

Flight got delayed by 3 hours but no compensation or anything

The crew on the flight was great and the food was good. The flight was on time and in fact arrived earlier than scheduled. The boarding process however was not great. I had a business class ticket but I had to stand in line for about 20 minutes at the gate before I could board. The bottleneck is that at the gate they check the boarding pass and passport all over again and there is no separate lane for business class and there were only 1 agent. The aircraft is very old . The entertainment system is antiquated and the programming is sub par.

I did not expect from Tata group like this worst experience food is too worst

Best flight I have taken so far between US and India. Air India service was surprisingly amazing.. had a low expectation, but the new Air India exceeded it.

Things have improved still cleanliness of aircraft and maintenance of flights, still needs attention. Crew members have become more welcoming, which is indeed a welcomed change.

Chaotic/Crowded check in. Delayed departure from LHR, resulting in a very delayed Dinner service. Since takeover by the TATAs, Air-India has become Uber commercial and not in a good way, but more like Ryanair. Most seats are now sold and at too high prices (£24 add on for a single windows seat). The promised transformation into a better (clean), efficient and professional airline is nowhere in sight ☹️ Thanks

Horrible flight conditions. Entertainment system not working. Charging points not working.
