FAQs - booking Asia flights

  • What are some popular airports to fly in and out of Asia?

Popular airports in Asia include Doha’s Hamad International Airport, Singapore Changi Airport and Tokyo Haneda International Airport (HND), which are some of the largest hubs on the continent. UK flyers tend to enjoy flying to Dubai International Airport or Hong Kong International Airport, both as a destination and a layover airport for destinations further afield, such as Japan and Australia.

  • What’s a good way to find cheap flights to Asia?

If you want to find cheaper flights to Asia from the UK, you’ll generally find much cheaper tickets if you select a flight with at least one layover. For example, from London Heathrow Airport or Manchester Airport, you can grab flights to Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport (BOM) with Swiss Air or Lufthansa, while flights from Heathrow to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport with Malaysia Airlines stop in Kuala Lumpur; both are generally cheaper than the direct option. Furthermore, make sure you book it well in advance to possibly get a cheaper price.

  • What visa do I need to fly to Asia?

Asia is a huge continent with many different countries with different immigration policies when it comes to UK citizens. Depending on the country you are visiting, it is likely you will need some sort of visa, with places such as China, Mongolia and Iran to name a few all requiring UK citizens to have an approved visa in their passport prior to arrival.

  • What options are there for direct flights to Asia?

You can fly directly to most major cities in Asia, especially when flying with a national airline such as Thai Airways to Bangkok or Japan Airlines to Tokyo. You can also fly to Middle Eastern countries such as Jordan, United Arab Emirates and Qatar. However, these flights can prove to be expensive. A wise option is to find flights with a short layover, and this will reduce the price by a distance in some cases.

  • How long is the flight to Asia?

An average direct flight from the United Kingdom to Asia takes 12h 41m, covering a distance of 5461 miles. The most popular route is London - Bangkok with an average flight time of 11h 25m.

  • What is the cheapest flight to Asia?

The cheapest ticket to Asia from the United Kingdom found in the last 72 hours was £230 one-way, and £380 round-trip. The most popular route is London Heathrow to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and the cheapest round-trip airline ticket found on this route in the last 72 hours was £509.

  • Which airlines fly to Asia?

British Airways, American Airlines & Virgin Atlantic fly the most frequently from the United Kingdom to Asia. The most popular route is from London to Bangkok, and Thai Airways, Air Canada and EVA Air fly this route the most.

  • What are the most popular destinations in Asia?

The next most popular destinations are Tokyo (17%) and New Delhi (8%). Searches for flights to Mumbai (7%), to Hong Kong (6%) and to Kuala Lumpur (5%) are also popular.

  • How does KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

Pros: "comfort"

Pros: "comfort"
Cons: "veg food was mostly repeated and pizza wasn't great"
Pros: "Good food and comfortable seats"
Cons: "Boarding was confused and disorganized, but that seems to be a common problem with ground staff at all Indian airports"
Pros: "I had better experience with Emirates before...we had to wait ages for our food but maybe because we were the last one on the list. Food was nice and crew friendly."
Pros: "Nothing to say"
Cons: "See the comments for — the flight from Kochi to Dubai In reality — much worst"
Cons: "The seats are a little tight and I paid for a bit of a larger seat. Next time I will upgrade for more room."
Cons: "Info system is not that easy to navigate So hard to find a movie"
Pros: "I am tall and was very happy with the leg room in economy class. Food was tasty."
Cons: "Nothing really. Was completely satisfied."
Pros: "ICE is amazing, excellent food also in economy, comfortable seats."
Cons: "If you sit on the double seats in the back you have to wait a lot to get off the plane."
Pros: "Excellent food, entertainment options, staff was great with the exception of one. Plane entertainment technology varies from route to route."
Cons: "Dubai airport is highly disappointing. The bathroom situation is atrocious! I am not exaggerating when I say I waited in line of 25 and 35 women two different times! The men’s situation isn’t ideal but is no where near the problem that is the women’s restrooms. The boarding process is mildly confusing - there is no public drinking fountains but if you buy water you are not allowed to take it to your gate. This info isn’t posted anywhere and makes no sense bc you purchased the water after you were checked through security. Also this rule truly only applies to women. A stewardess showed preferential treatment to someone who looked more native than us and then didn’t apologize. I understood the customer was upset so the flight attendant was trying to pacify the lady/couple but at least apologize for being rude. Dubai airport very much favors men and I would never travel without my husband. I would fly Emirates again but it won’t be my top choice and I won’t be going back to the Dubai airport anytime soon."
Pros: "The in flight crew was friendly and helpful."
Cons: "The seat I have 41A is quite awkward, especially when 41B was a plus size person. The slanting profile of the wall also made it quite claustrophobic. But overall endurance."

Check-in staff were not very pleasing and sounded to be rude, even though I hold a platinum membership. The aircraft is brand new and good. As it's a short flight no other comments.

The seats did not have foot rest. If there is no foot rest you can’t sleep.

Bus from gate to plane waited more than 30 minutes in a freezing temperatures of a/c. Plane temperature was very cold .

Flight delayed, rerouted, communication extremely poor. Crew efficient but robotic, not supportive

Privacy and comfort of the QSuites is wonderful. The boarding process in Doha is cumbersome and confusing. As transfer passengers, traveling in Business Class, we went through security twice, including one at the gate requiring all electronic devices removed from bags and watches off, which are a great way to lose belongings as a few hundred people rush through to board the plane.

Cons: "Please review booking 33UZCS made through your app and costing $1493. I was blocked by Qatar airlines from boarding. I need help in getting the issue addressed"
Pros: "The crew were welcoming and accommodating, whether you wanted to sleep or to watch entertainment or eat/drink."
Pros: "Entertainment and food is always great with Qatar!"
Cons: "After I got in my seat an Islamic lady came and said that I was in her seat. I looked at her ticket and while it was the right seat number, she was on the wrong flight. I got a stewardess to help her. She had gone through 3 boarding pass checks and was still on the wrong flight. They let her fly!"
Pros: "Qatar Airways could not be described except a FIVE STARS airline. Great hospitality and respectful crew"
Cons: "Low cost airline so they charge you for everything. I had to pay $159 to check a bag for a 1.5 hour flight. That nearly doubled the cost of the original ticket. By the time they charge you for everything, you don't save any money. And they even weigh every purse, backpack, handbag, etc. at the gate and start charging customers for carry on. Don't fly with these guys. And because their customers are dissatisfied, all the employees I encountered were rude."

I travel business class because I like to lie flat on the flight and sleep. I achieved that on this flight, and I really do like BA's new cubicles. As regards the rest of the experience however, I could have been in Premium Economy. The lounge was crowded, and the food/ drink in it was nothing special. The in-flight food was also nothing special, and the in-flight service was pretty perfunctory. Sorry, BA - you need to provide a better service. Cheers

In the "old" configuration Club class, in an aisle seat you are literally sleeping in the aisle with no privacy at all. In addition, there is hardly any storage space, and it is hard to make sense of the seat controls.

Pros: "Very clean plane, comfortable seating, crew great, food actually delicious!"
Cons: "Flight was delayed more than an hour due to mishandling of baggage - was at runway for takeoff and was called back to the gate because a bag was loaded that should not have been."
Pros: "I liked the crew, they were friendly."
Cons: "The food was not that pleasant. They need to have a variety based on their takeoff location."
Pros: "Nothing"
Cons: "3 canceled flights and lost luggage.... bad communication by employers and absolutely no help ... we were sent all over the airport several times to the wrong places and felt that no body cared in this process .... I would like compensation and something to make this right ... we also lost our upgraded seats I lpaid for and the vegan meals we ordered in advance"
Pros: "When I left my wallet behind in my seat, it was returned quickly with everything intact. This was most likely due to quick action by the Bulgarian security personnel, but whoever did it, I am very grateful!"
Cons: "The cart delivering drinks was not capable of providing a simple glass of ordinary water. I waited 20-30 minutes for a small plastic glass to arrive. The effort to sell their expensive bottled water instead was obvious. Not very customer friendly."
Pros: "We got there safely..."
Cons: "Cabin crew were not very helpful. Onboard entertainment kept going off. The plane was very old and smelt. The aircon kept on dripping on me."
Pros: "NA"
Cons: "The transfer from T5 to T3 was chaotic. Queues to join queues to get the transfer bus. People were getting caught on a moving escalator because the crowd in front had nowhere they could go to make room. Extremely dangerous! It took longer to get from T5 to T3 than it did to get from Dublin to London. Boarding in T3 for the flight to Denver was almost as bad. Bodies everywhere, no organisation and no help. Then the aircraft itself was so old with uncomfortable seats and an almost unwatchable screen. I will never transit through LHR again."
Pros: "The plane was very comfortable!"
Cons: "British Airways boarding is very chaotic. Not unorganized at all. They don’t seem to care about economy passengers!"

Crew did not cooperate… I just asked water twice for one crew member and she didn’t get anything.. and when I asked other crew member he gave me water and he was not respectful.. I kept Hindu non veg meal chicken .. when I get my turn chicken was not provided and then they gave me veg paneer and green peas curry which I don’t like..

Pros: "The flight was on time. Food was reasonable."
Cons: "A bit more leg-room and there is some scope for improvement in the food. Also, the entertainement could have more south Indian content and also allow to access entertainement for more time."
Pros: "The crew made a bad decision concerning me and another passenger. I had extra leg room in front of him and he still insisted on crushing my knees with his reclining part of his seat. The stewardess choice to side with him because it was ok to crush my knees because he paid for a upgrade in seat,"
Cons: "I will be filing a complaint about this matter soon and request a refund for the total disrespect of me as a paying customer, which they did not value at all"
Cons: "Getting more minimal on the food service. Emirate have more and better quality"
Pros: "I flew economy Melbourne > Abu Dhabi and then Abu Dhabi to Melbourne. The first leg of the flight was great, the flight wasn’t full and I had a whole row to myself. The flight attendant even gave me some tips to ensure nobody sat there. This flight was on an A380 so the plane was large and it felt spacious."
Cons: "There are a number of things that Etihad do that just degrade the quality and experience of the flight and I probably wouldn’t fly with them again as a result. I’ve listed these below: 1) Entertainment system is poorly appointed and travel in two seperate months found that little had been refreshed on the in flight programs. 2) The entertainment system is deactivated until the seat belt sign is turned off, and is deactivated again about 30 minutes prior to landing. 3) You practically have to cut off your arm to get some water. I would always bring my own water on the flight, but Australian regulations prevent more than 100mls being carried on flight. 4) The service is inconsistent, some staff are just downright rude and others are incredibly friendly. The time waiting after pressing the call bell is excessive and in one case my drink never arrived. 5) Unlike other airlines, they don’t give you a “menu” to chose from for the inflight meal. Instead they just come around asking “Chicken, Lamb or vegetarian”, and lack any real understanding of what’s actually in the food. 6) When you order a drink, they open the can pour some into a cup but don’t give you the remainder in the can. 7) The inflight wifi is expensive. 19.95 USD for 180mb puts them at one of the most expensive. Overall, I would have expected a bit more from an airline such as Etihad."
Cons: "food was bad in taste ,they present us just like give to baggers there was no serving in trays .pictures show in add. are all falls we did not get that kind of food in our whole trip . for exps .in dinner they serve 2 small buns filled with 2 leave of spinch 1 bean barito 1small piece of chocolate for desert. for breakfast was lentel, with mashed patatos.when I asked for somthing else.reply was we do not have anything else.so i did not have anything in my 15 houre flight."
Pros: "The service onboard was great, the crew were attentive and looked after the passengers."
Cons: "The Boeing plane had very restrictive movement while seated. It was especially difficult when eating on the plane you could not cut your food due to the space restriction with fellow passengers."
Pros: "To be honest, the plane, crew, airport... everything was overall pretty nice."
Cons: "My checked luggage got delayed for this first trip, and I had to wait three hours at the airport security."
Pros: "We ended up being delayed on the flight for about 3 hours due to fog in Abu Dhabi— delays are always frustrating but the crew was absolutely fantastic. The head of cabin crew personally came by to explain the problem and made he passengers feel welcome. Excellent service all around, especially when the situation is unpleasant but not within anyone’s control."
Cons: "food was not up to standard. i pre ordered but they said they did not have. Also passengers do not have to freeze all the flight time. i told them 10 times to reduce the blower and increse the temp. People were getting jackets to cover them as it was very cold. NO NEED FOR SUCH LOW TEMP FO SO LONG TIME very discomforting"

Flight seats were broken . TV screens don't work. Remote don't work. It was a horrible experience. Felt like so risky flight. Plus my bags were lost and when we recovered the bags after 2 days items were missing inside

I did not like any thing . One of the worst flight in last 22 years of my foreign trips. In Average I have 2 trips from US to India

Pros: "Flight was able to reach on time inspite of late start"
Cons: "Food, service, entertainment system in flight were in despicable shape Staff not courteous at all"
Pros: "Nothing"
Cons: "It was like flying a crowded bus with push and shove!"
Cons: "Never ever travel by this airline. The flight was delayed by three hours and no one at the at airport was available from Air India to at least tell us when it going to fly.Despite having a business class ticket we were made to stand for three hours and no reason was given for the delay. No question"
Pros: "Nothing"
Cons: "Poor service, poor organization, no proper instructions for flight connection. No wheelchair despite being requested while booking and before departure."
Cons: "Air India randomly reassigned seats that we had selected while booking. Even after paying for new seat assignment (we were traveling with young kids so wanted to be together), they did not assign us the new seats due to a ‘system glitch’. My wife spent upwards of 3 hrs on phone for such a simple task. Very bad!!!"
Cons: "I don’t know yet. We had to miss the flight because of the earlier flight’s delay. Ridiculous planning by whoever is the in-charge of airline scheduling. I urge people to stay away from India. They charge competitively and the service stinks. No reason to use this airline."
Pros: "The staff were good"
Cons: "The flight was delayed No entertainment on flight No choice in food and drinks"
Pros: "Overall it wasn’t that bad"
Cons: "My entertainment set was broken so I was suffering for 15 hours"
