Flights from Los Angeles: the best tips from KAYAK users' own experiences

Insights shared by verified travellers who flew from Los Angeles to anywhere
BenFlew with Austrian Airlines-Sept 2026
Be prepared for a prolonged journey from the new car rental center to the terminal. Shuttle buses are a mess, it takes a long time to get on one and they don’t take you directly to the part of the terminal you need. Also LAX still has old on-board luggage scanners which means no liquids in carry-ons.
JaeFlew with Cathay Pacific-Jun 2026
Book a window or isle seat and fly economy plus if possible.
JulianFlew with Delta-Jun 2026
Be prepared for new screening processes including dog sniffing. You're asked to walk in group of 2 for about a 15 foot stretch while a sniffing dog follows just behind.
DadeFlew with Japan Airlines-Jun 2026
Lax airport was confusing and took forever to get around in. You need lots of time to get where you need to go. So give yourself lots of time
ArturoFlew with Royal Air Maroc-Jul 2026
Bring a good set of wired earphones to access the onboard entertainment system. The airline provides a set that is less than ok.
LorynFlew with Philippine Airlines-Jul 2026
In economy, the movies did not work only watching series. Be sure to charge electronics for any media entertainment.
RoyaFlew with Lufthansa-Jun 2026
Give yourself enough time if you have connecting flight cause emigration takes about 1 hr by itself
Verified travelerFlew with JetBlue-Aug 2026
The seats at JetBlue are old and uncomfortable. Make sure that you check that your assigned seat can recline if you have health issues or spine pain.
Verified travelerFlew with Fiji Airways-Mar 2026
Make sure to walk around at least once or twice for your circulation. If you have a large appetite make sure to eat before flying and bring extra snacks or something to eat because meals are served at the beginning of the final third of the flight.
NicoleFlew with JetBlue-Apr 2026
Bring your own snacks/food. Extra legroom is nice but not really worth the extra money, unless you want free alcohol.
Verified travelerFlew with Spirit Airlines-Mar 2026
Charge all of your devices before boarding as there will won’t be any places to charge while on the aircraft.
CharlesFlew with Delta-Mar 2026
It's a long trip. Get up and move around if you can.
Verified travelerFlew with United Airlines-Apr 2026
Bring your own entertainment. Prepare for cramped seating.
Verified travelerFlew with Japan Airlines-Mar 2026
Don’t fly through LAX. It is a rundown airport and we had to park at a remote area and the bussed to the main terminal. This added 20 minutes to our transfer time.
SoosnataFlew with Delta-Feb 2026
I prepaid my baggage fee through the Delta App during web check-in; however, I was unable to locate the receipt afterward. It would be helpful if prepaid baggage receipts were clearly linked within the trip details section and/or accessible under the traveler profile for easy retrieval. This added visibility would enhance transparency and provide greater convenience for customers managing their travel documentation. Overall, a small enhancement that could further elevate the digital experience.
BrandyiFlew with American Airlines-Dec 2025
LAX on Christmas Eve around 9am was a breeze. No passengers were in line to print bag tags, bag drop, or security. Made it through from entry to the concourse (for American Airlines) in under 12 minutes. Boarding process at gate 159 used turnstiles, which I prefer.
VirginiaFlew with Alaska Airlines-Dec 2025
I get a little motion sickness even in a car and wasn’t sure if i needed for flight, lesson learned. so Even if you have a little bit of motion sickness, take your medicine before flight…
KhahnieFlew with United Airlines-Jan 2026
Give yourself plenty of time. Bring a lot of patience and practice kindness. Also bring a portable charger
Verified travelerFlew with ANA-Dec 2025
LAX checking in was quick and the connecting flight was the adjacent gate so it was very convenient.
SunnyFlew with Finnair-Jan 2026
Pack comfortably, read the baggage guidelines, and order in flight amenities ahead of time if you can.
SharonFlew with Air New Zealand-Feb 2026
Book directly with the airline to maximize your ability to modify your booking online.
GraceFlew with Delta-Feb 2026
We were early arriving so had to sit on the runway for a bit. Remember that you aren’t really supposed to use the lavatories in those situations as it’s an “active runway” situation, so plan to use the bathroom if you need to prior to descent.
Verified travelerFlew with Spirit Airlines-Jan 2026
With Spirit at LAX you check in at Terminal 2, go thru security in terminal 1, then you have to take a bus to the gate. When you return, you have to take the bus back to terminal 1 to get your luggage.
Verified travelerFlew with ANA-Feb 2026
Check the "true" costs of a flight with the actual carrier versus the many add on charges of a discount fare and subpar performance. To see if the difference is worth the pain..
AlanFlew with Turkish Airlines-Dec 2025
try to pay for a seat instead of waiting as you will end up in the back and the seats back there have less space it seems like.
ShilpaFlew with TAP AIR PORTUGAL-Dec 2025
Seats were comfortable- vegetarian meal was pretty mehhh- maybe pack your own meal
Verified travelerFlew with Cathay Pacific-Feb 2026
Arrive early, Boarding gate may be a relatively long walk.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska Airlines-Feb 2026
Plan for delays and bring a small travel bag.
TobinFlew with United Airlines-Jan 2026
Prepare a meal. Try not to check bags
Verified travelerFlew with Spirit Airlines-Jan 2026
As bad as it gets. Sign in at one terminal (40 minutes), walk to another terminal to go through security (1 hour+), then take a shuttle through taxiing planes on the tarmac to your flight's terminal (up to another hour). Absurd.. Give yourself a whopping 4 hours or you could miss your flight.
Verified travelerFlew with Cathay Pacific-Nov 2025
Arrive early, the airport is a bit confusing and crowd handling is inefficient.
Verified travelerFlew with China Southern-Jun 2025
Passports are everything when traveling in China beginning with your flight! Keep it handy for every transition! Also the flight boards in the airports don’t always show every flight. If you don’t know Mandarin, practice a few phrases or questions such as to ask about your flight gate, or have a translator app ready. There aren’t many English speaking employees at airports or airlines. Also, unless they are under 30 years old, most Chinese folks know traditional Mandarin not the new simplified. Also many general workers are likely of a regional dialect so if you need help look for someone that appears younger and in a customer facing role like a gate agent. The translator apps are pretty good but limited. Give yourself a lot more time to get around than you think you need. Most importantly, everyone was super nice and helpful.
IreneFlew with Delta-Jun 2025
Click the QR code to do the Ag declaration before you board
RobertFlew with Qantas Airways-Jun 2025
Make sure you’ve got enough time to switch terminals if needbe
LeoFlew with American Airlines-Jul 2025
Avoid LAX. Personal experience. I have had less chaotic process in Ontario, CA airport. If transferring through another AA flight, consider Phoenix airport.
Verified travelerFlew with Delta-Apr 2025
It’s an easy short flight, so a quick recharge nap is nice. A neck pillow is recommended.
Verified travelerFlew with Singapore Airlines-Mar 2025
Stand up and move around at least every 2 hours
HFlew with American Airlines-Mar 2025
It’s really easy. The only complaint might be the tram back to the last terminal to Tucson. It runs about once an hour and there is only one food option when you get there. Just give yourself plenty of time..
John William MichaelFlew with American Airlines-Mar 2025
Watch the departure gate. Some are distant requiring shuttle service and there is minimal to non existent food, beverage, and usual shopping at these gates. Take food with you before boarding the shuttle.
CaseyFlew with Scandinavian Airlines-May 2025
Better concession options on other terminals than 3, if you’re flying Delta. Explore if you have time.
CHARLESFlew with American Airlines-Mar 2025
There are no food or vendor services in the boarding areas of Terminal 4 at LAX.
PaulFlew with Alaska Airlines-Mar 2025
Be patient. Get there early. Ignore the crazies in LAX.
Verified travelerFlew with Southwest-Apr 2025
Arrive at the airport at least two hours earlier.
RichardFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-May 2025
Bring a pen. The airline insists that you fill out customs forms but do not have pens. How much could a pen that also advertises for Alaskan Airlines possibly cost in relation to the cost of the fare?
KateFlew with Frontier-Dec 2024
Pack a snack food and airport is very expensive. Bring an empty water bottle. There are lots of filling stations. Delays seem to happen frequently be flexible and kind. You’ll get to where you’re going.
selamatFlew with Singapore Airlines-Dec 2024
Having comfortable clothing is the key for having a good trip and trying get some sleep.
AngelaFlew with EVA Air-Jan 2025
Food is so so. Take your favorite snacks. Download your favorite movies and shows. Everything else is standard of any international flight you’d expect. Pretty straightforward.
Verified travelerFlew with Iberia-Jan 2025
Make sure you arrive early. Sometimes, the traffic getting to LAX can be a total nightmare.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska Airlines-Jan 2025
Bring water and snacks with shorter flights as some routes will not offer it.
CarmelFlew with Alaska Airlines-Jan 2025
Know that flights are very unreliable so pad your days/plans.
Verified travelerFlew with WestJet-Nov 2024
Don’t wait to the last hour to get to LAX for your flight. Traffic is heavy in and out of LAX and it will take at least an hour to checkin and clear security. Be there at least 2 hours pre-flight.
JenFlew with Air Caraïbes-Sept 2024
Bring snacks! Might also want to bring a seat cushion. Spend lots of time thinking about how happy you are that you got a cheap ticket!
Verified travelerFlew with Hawaiian Airlines-Oct 2024
It varys to the airport state and country. The United States have large airports with the availability of WiFi and charging ports and usable electrical outlets In Romania, WiFi was limited to areas and weak . Warsaw Poland WiFi was much better But still no charging visible. If you travel to Europe you will need a adapter to use there and convert your plug to charge up your mobile phone/tablet/ laptop.
Verified travelerFlew with Cathay Pacific-Oct 2024
Make sure if you are selecting a seat that is in the front row on the side the inside seats have the tv monitors the outside seat you are out of luck
JFlew with Alaska Airlines-Oct 2024
You get a little a Pretzel bag or Biscoff crackers. Bring your snacks for the long haul. And listen for free gate checks !
Verified travelerFlew with Air Transat-Nov 2024
Food is not provided, so be sure to bring some with you, or be prepared to just buy.
Verified travelerFlew with American Airlines-Sept 2024
Do not check in your docs, and medication in a check bag. Carry with you to the cabin.
Verified travelerFlew with Spirit Airlines-Oct 2024
Stretch when able, get WiFi, pre charge the phone, bring headphones, clear out old photos.
Verified travelerFlew with Philippine Airlines-Oct 2024
Do not do overweight on baggage. It's only 25 kg per luggage
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska Airlines-Nov 2024
Leaver for the airport sooner especially during the holidays.
TerrieFlew with Spirit Airlines-Oct 2024
Get there early just in case there’s traffic’s
Verified travelerFlew with Aer Lingus-Jul 2024
Go to the airport early, LAX is the worst airport to fly out from. There is just so much traffic on the way to get there. We used the flyaway option in van nuys, ( buy your parking ticket in advance) costing us only 115 dollars for parking for over two weeks and it’s very secure. The buses go every 15 minutes from there directly to LAX. Best way to get to and from LAX. Check in was easy.
IvanFlew with Air France-Aug 2024
Use the self-check-in kiosk if you have a few check-in items. You can also ask for them to check your carry-on bags if you don't absolutely need to have them with you. Always be kind to the agents, they have stressful jobs and a little kindness goes a long way.
OzzyFlew with French Bee-Aug 2024
Pack light, a carry on is perfect for a week in Paris and you’ll save time by not waiting for your baggage. Also Orly airport is not as busy and has convenient transportation to all places
SaraFlew with Spirit Airlines-Aug 2024
Pay extra for the carry on and we got to board 1st. I did not pay to sit together but when I checked in the day before we were all 3 together.
Verified travelerFlew with Air Canada-Jul 2024
Bring a jacket or blanket and a snack as there is no food (other than a small snack) but a long enough flight that you may want something.
AmrFlew with Qatar Airways-Aug 2024
Be there 3 hours before plane , as boarding and security can be long if you are not doing online chk in as it is not Available for everyone .
karenFlew with Alaska Airlines-Jun 2024
Personal tips are bring your own food if you're hungry; keep foot space as open as possible for leg room; pack your patience
alanFlew with Alaska Airlines-Jul 2024
Show up early. Security line was long (admittedly at the end of the 4th of July weekend).

For long flights on airlines built for short flights (SWA) anyone over 5’ 10” is going to get cramped. Consider an Economy Plus upgrade when available.

Make sure you separate your luggage tags from your tickets
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska Airlines-May 2024
Please be prepared to check in your luggage even if there is available space in the overhead bins. Despite the availability of space, Alaska Airlines employees refused to allow us to bring our bags onto the plane and insisted that we check them in.
BasantFlew with Alaska Airlines-Feb 2024
Smooth experience. As I was offered EXIT row seating, with lots of leg space but with a trade off of NO-recline.
Verified travelerFlew with Qantas Airways-Feb 2024
Use swimmers ear wax for ear plugs and be sure to have a good neck pillow and sleep mask
AliFlew with French Bee-Dec 2023
eat before your flight and download entertainment on your phone
DiamondFlew with Delta-Jan 2024
Put some media on your phone and iPad...the wifi worked on the way there but not the way home...its finicky (unless u pay for it). There aren't that many options for the player in front of you. Also bring your own headphones with the appropriate jack that can plug in, they may not have one for passengers for free. Food is good but they may run out of what you want.
HelenFlew with Lufthansa-Dec 2023
Board the flight with everyone since they don’t seem to check and the boarding scanning is no longer a scan of your documents. You walk through the gate one person at a time, even the kiddos. Luggage bins were so full. Check it in and don’t forget air tags. That provided great comfort to know your luggage’s proximity.
IreneFlew with Alaska Airlines-Dec 2023
•Check in bag tags are only printed 4 hrs before flight takeoff, so if you’re stuck at the airport earlier you will need to keep your luggage with you till then. •Unless you’re able to sleep on a plane, consider bringing an iPad to stream entertainment, because there is no screen on the plane.
ShaunaFlew with British Airways-Dec 2023
I would suggest calling the airline to make sure that their TV screens work on the back of the seats, and if they don’t work that the entertainment option would work on your cell phones.
Verified travelerFlew with United Airlines-Jan 2024
Take earphones to watch movies, we had the ones United airlines gave us on the way down so we were good.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Dec 2023
Measure the on -board bag using a medicine scale, becouse Iberia uses zero tolerance

DL482 did not wait for about 10 of us including a mother and 3 children when we were in the same terminal on DL486, where we were switching from waiting for a jet bridge fix, to moving to a neighboring gate. I understand taxiing delays are ok either but man. We only needed 5 more minutes. DL482 did not adjust from their times at all. This was my first time with Delta.

Delta is getting worst by the minute. Where this was at one point my only go to airline, it has become like a budget airline

Very bad multiple confusion and miscommunication which i ended up missing my flight.

Delta is always late. Ruined our first day of a short vacation. Timing is important. We pay to stay on an itinerary

Seats were not bad enough and uncomfortable good legroom in the emergency exit row we were in, but we were forbidden to hold my grandson on my lap for a little while, and the stewardess passed us saying it was against regulations which makes little or no sense when you’re 36,000 feet. The food snacks were really bad. Tasteless tasted like wallpaper, but we’re supposed to be protein bars, and the announcements were all completely incoherent because of the noise of the airplane and the lowness and crackly nature of the PA system.. this was disgraceful. No one in our party could understand a word of what the captain or the flight attendant were saying —not a word! The landing was a little hairy in a pretty stiff crosswind -we bounced before the plane stabilized on the runway

First The flight got delayed because one of the crew members was late and we couldn’t board until she arrived. Then we all boarded and got held in the tarmac for another 30 min.

It was as good as it could be. Flying is not a pleasant experience these days.

Be on time? When not on time a circling for over an hour offer more than 1 bag of chips to the passengers? It was a 7 hour flight by the time we got done.

Long story short, it was one of the better flight experiences I've had in some time when compared with other airlines.

Generally on time departures and arrivals, clean planes, sky miles membership provides great benefits (complimentary upgrades, etc).

Selection of movies didn't include recent box office hits. Food was average not great. English sparkling wine is not drinkable. Otherwise, everything was great.

Check in at the desk was very slow pus Security, although not Virgin issue at JFK was a nightmare. 50 minuet wait no time to explore airport and get last minuet gifts. total wait 1.5hours

Seating and zone. The minor I went with didn’t even seat close to me

Great staff great experience, made a 2 hour delay very bearable

Great staff, great experience, made a 2 hour delay very bearable

I was my pleasure to fly virgin on my birthday for my first solo trip ever 🫶🏼

We had an unfortunate experience where we had to leave the aircraft after boarding, shortly before the scheduled takeoff time, and re-board. The reason given was that a passenger felt ill and had to cancel their plans and therefor their luggage had to be found and removed.

My only complaint is that the pocket in front of me was ripped and my things, like iPad and airline magazines, kept slipping to the floor.

Flight delayed yet again. Crew apathetic and unhelpful re affect on connecting flight.

Cabin crew on our flight showed lack of any customer service gruff and acting annoyed if you asked anything and I mean anything Example a man on the seat over dropped his beer on my husbands blanket We asked if we could switch out blankets cabin crew Said. No we don’t have any extras OK well can you take the wet one Cabin crew looked disgusted and annoyed Took it no OK or yes just a growl

On time and stellar premium class service. Not liking non LCD display in seat backs - miss the convenience of not using your own device.

It was my first time flying with Alaska Airlines and it was a pleasure!

We enjoy the professionalism and cleanliness of the staff and aircraft. We are grateful to the experiences pilots and flight crew

Our experience with American Airlines was extremely disappointing and honestly made an already exhausting international journey much worse. After flying all the way from Melbourne and dealing with significant jet lag, the American Airlines experience at LAX was the last thing we needed. The terminal and boarding area felt very old and uncomfortable, with little to no air conditioning and only old fans running in the area. Boarding was also through outdoor stairs rather than a jet bridge, which felt especially inconvenient after such a long journey. Even though we were traveling First Class, the onboard experience was surprisingly poor. There were no meaningful snack options, no decent coffee available to order, and the aircraft was so small that there was barely enough overhead space for carry-on luggage. The staff experience was also disappointing and lacked the warmth or attentiveness we had experienced on our international flights. To make matters worse, the flight departed late, extending an already very long travel day. Overall, the combination of the outdated terminal, uncomfortable boarding process, limited First Class service, small aircraft, poor staff experience, and delay made this an extremely unpleasant final leg of our journey. It significantly worsened our exhaustion and jet lag rather than making the connection home easier. Unfortunately, this experience was bad enough that I do not plan to travel with American Airlines again in the future.

Gate 461 the worst in LAX Boarding lacks professionalism And as usual, your food sucks.

With a 24 hour delay, the Flight stared off rough. They had a nationwide IT Outage but communications to Passengers was very bad. Ground Staff and Ticket Agents were extremely rude and unhelpful. Perhaps they should take ground training from DL or Qatar. The food was horrible. Seafood was mixed with Bacon. Those two don’t have any space for Jewish or Muslim Faith Customers. The Airline needs new management.

My seat had a worn out cushion, which made it a bit uncomfortable. Other than that, the flight was excellent.

My luggage never made it, I booked business class only to find out I’m sitting in the back. Very disappointed with the reservation

The boarding and fllight were good. The reason for the ok rating was the long walk to get to the transport to finally get to the gate.

Crew was great! Food sub-bar, tepid & flavorless. No snack options on trans-atlantic flight. Premium Economy seats ok, leg rest wouldn’t stay in place.

Spent unnecessary hours on phone calls to resolve small error on one of the passengers name... It was extremely stressful and time consuming... Not great... Also all 4 members of the family: 2 parents/ 2 teenagers were allocated separate seats (even separate floors... Not great...

Canceled flight late London to Florence. Help at airport very poor. Treated poorly. Had to sleep in the airport. Lost bags- still do not have them. Horrible. I should be reimbursed!

They had us seating down for one hour just waiting on the plane

The issue was not with BA it was with the link yoiu sent fopr booking the flight

Need to offer Better food from LAX to London Service from London to Delhi very delayed after take off.

Great crew and food and beverage. Seating tight but not the airline's fault. Will definitely fly BA in future!

I was transferred to an American Airlines flight. The boarding was late and unorganized. The seating was extremely tight and uncomfortable. Will not use AA again.

The check-in of my luggage was terrible. When purchased my tickets, one luggage and one carry-on was part of the fight. My flight was switched from British to American Airline. During check-in of luggage at the airport, I was denied and had to pay extra $75. How do I get reimbursed for this extra luggage payment?

I was charged fees for check in bags at the airport by British Airways. It was supposed to be no charge but Kayak messed up my booking apparently and I had to pay for check in bags. I paid $175.

Flight delay and can’t much help passenger do the change connecting flight.

It was awful ....my first time flying on it and I will NEVER fly it again ....everything about it was terrible .....most especially the flight attendants

Remind customers of the need to have passport or new ID for boarding.

It was ok. It was expensive to check 2 bags ($75.00 per bag), and then it took a long time to wait for shuttle to take us from one terminal to the terminal where the plane was taking off at LAX. And all of this for a flight where we had to pay for any food or drink that was not water.

When I wanted to check in 3 hours prior to boarding time, the employees mentioned “a little over an hour delay” so I waited for an hour then I went to go look for food in the terminal and most people from that flight were in the same area looking for food. Finally I decided after food to check to see if it’s anytime closer and now it’s 2 mins until boarding closes?! What are you kidding me? I didn’t receive anything via sms about boarding now nor via email or on the intercom. I luckily made it through, barely, and then there’s no room for my carry on mind you I’m in the very first row so I had to place my purse in one further row back and my carry on sections down. Not sure who pays for better seats to get your stuff placed all over the plane but that was the worst experience I’ve ever had flying with anyone.

I liked the turn-style feature at gate 209B at LAX. Very efficient process. The gate staff also made several, clearly directed announcements so I felt very informed.

The seats were awful, hard plastic covered in sheet vinyl. The airline tries to scam you into paying extra to get seat together when the flight wasn’t full. They were going to separate a family with young children but my wife who had a row to herself gave up her seat so the young mom could be with her young boys. I’m never giving this airline my money again.

It was a short flight so no food or entertainment….

Flight was delayed 3 times, would have been nice to have received text message instead of email notifications. Frontier app wasn’t even updated accordingly, no gate number disclosed. No agent at front desk of gate to inform of delay. Very confused and left if the dark

They changed the timing , first delayed by 4 hours then went back to 40 mins late, we had to run back to airport to not miss our flight. This is ridiculous

With frontier you get what you pay for. The flight was two hours late. It’s a tight fit for the number of people they bring but you get to where you’re going cheap. Sometimes that’s more important than a nifty drink and cool TV..
