Flights from Europe to England: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travellers who flew the route from Europe to England
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Sept 2026
Try and get in at any other terminal other than terminal 5 at Heathrow. It’s a mess of a terminal. Depending on where you get dropped off it’s potentially a shuttle train ride to the arrivals and passport control and baggage claim which can take another 30-45 mins from the plane
ZyadaFlew with Aer Lingus-Jul 2026
Aer Lingus is a good choice for this route - flights are reliable, usually on time, and staff are helpful. Belfast City Airport is small and easy to get around, much more convenient than the international airport. Arriving at Birmingham Airport is also quick and simple. Tip: Check in online early and make sure you know your baggage allowance before you travel to avoid extra fees.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Aug 2026
Go early, as the lines were extremely long at baggage drop. Once you get through security, smooth sailing. If you have a connecting flight from Heathrow, follow the PURPLE signs to connecting flights; otherwise you'll exit security and have to claim your bags and check in again.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Aug 2026
Use BA, get there early to ensure time for check in and security. Be kind! Everyone is there doing their best and happy to help.
KyriakiFlew with British Airways-Aug 2026
Download a movie so you don’t depend on WiFi for entertainment.
Verified travelerFlew with Turkish Airlines-Aug 2026
Give plenty of time. The airport is huge with large amount of walking. Additional security checks at gates which are understaffed add to line ups and wait times.
KaishaFlew with British Airways-Jul 2026
You need to use a clear plastic bag for liquids but it doesnt get given to you until you already have your bag in the tray.
Verified travelerFlew with Eurowings-Jul 2026
You still have to follow the liquid rules and take out electronics at Dusseldorf. Also neither way did they check my hand luggage (basic fare).
JFlew with Ryanair-Aug 2026
Be ready for delay starting from Internet network for an evisa to be checked on UK government website for those with the European passport.
SaidFlew with Wizz Air-Aug 2026
Craiova airport is small one hour before scheduled flight is enough to process your departure

Allow plenty of time to navigate the labyrinth that is LHR.
Verified travelerFlew with Finnair-Aug 2026
Give yourself time in London to get to connecting flights.

Check in early as it is big airport
SebastianFlew with American Airlines-Jun 2026
Do not wait for the flight to show up on the board, ours didn’t, you are just supposed to find the British Airways checkin desk
DennisFlew with easyJet-May 2026
Get a suitcase that is EasyJet sized, no more baggage fees. When it's that size, it's easy to carry, No wheels, no extending handles (why use your luggage allowance for the weight of the case?). No worries that you'll get fined when the bag doesn't fit.
Ivan SammyFlew with easyJet-May 2026
Don’t forget to pack some cold weather clothes in your hand luggage 🧳. You may be in for a surprise drop in temperature😊
CharisFlew with TAP AIR PORTUGAL-Apr 2026
Make sure your luggage is plastic wrapped if you’re flying in rain!
SnapyouFlew with easyJet-Apr 2026
easyJet is pretty good for low cost carrier. Because of the way the terminal is structured, there is a much longer walk and more stairs than would be expected. My favourite airport is LHR, and I prefer LGW over LTN, but LTN is closer to home.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Mar 2026
Eat before you board. Schiphol is huge airside so make sure you leave enough time to get to your gate
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Apr 2026
give yourself extra time to go through security
KateFlew with Ryanair-May 2026
Be prepared to stand a long time either in the buildings or on the tarmac. Be prepared for the weather conditions. Purchase food prior to embarking. Don't expect Lavazza coffee to taste anything like it does normally - its gross.
CharlesFlew with American Airlines-Mar 2026
Recommend you finding another airport for a connection. London Heathrow security process is laborious and very tiring.
FiruzFlew with British Airways-Dec 2025
FRA terminal 2 is a breeze. The fastest terminal for departure and arrival I am aware of. To get from check-in to gate is takes even at busy times hardly 15 min. Most times less then 10min. On arrival the most time consuming part is the bus transfer from apron to gate (approx. 10min). Immigration is usually done in 2min and the luggage is always super fast. Usually my suitcase is already on the belt . The only other time consuming part is to get from terminal 2 to the train station, which can take 10-15min. Usually I manage to get within 30 min from aircraft doors opening to train station. I love the efficiency of FRA airport.
Verified travelerFlew with American Airlines-Feb 2026
Use the train to get to the airport. Transportation is fantastic. Check in super smooth. I was there at 5am. Perfect time as it was almost deserted. Few places to get a coffee as there are no many stores open too early.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Jan 2026
Be aware that the security is not as modern at Lyon as it is at London. At London Heathrow you do not have to remove electrical devices from hand baggage and can take most liquids through the new scanners. At Lyon St Exupéry they do not have the new equipment so you need to consider that it may take longer to get through security checks.
NadineFlew with Ryanair-Feb 2026
If you have cabin luggage, you really must board early to get your bag near your seat. But then you have to put up with queueing forever! Like over 30 minutes!! Best not to take any cabin luggage and then board last, but then you still have to wait whilst everyone finds their seat. Not sure how best to do it!!
SimonFlew with British Airways-Jan 2026
Slow security at Inverness and you walk out to the plane through the rain. No issue but worth knowing
JeffreyFlew with British Airways-Jan 2026

Linate is a great and easy aitport to get to. Closer tham Malpensa so cheapet and faster to get to, with subway.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Jul 2025
British Airways does not allow for check-in through app or website. There is a message that passports need to be scanned, but no way to do it. Check-in was unavailable at airport kiosks, so we had to do it in person at the desk. Not a huge deal, but allow plenty of time! Also a bit stressful if you want to choose/change/buy a seat as it is very last minute.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Jun 2025
Be sure to have at least 2 hour layover when flying through London. Also, we have TSA Global and when we checked our luggage, asked to confirm it was on our flight. We were told it was. It was not
ChandraFlew with British Airways-May 2025
Must make sure that all the liquids or creams go in a bag to avoid delays during security clearance and hand bag inspection
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Apr 2025
Get to the point passport control early! Almost missed my flight. Check in very easy, but the sign said 22 minutes to my gate. It took 60 minutes to get to the gate with the huge line at passport control.
Verified travelerFlew with TAP AIR PORTUGAL-May 2025
Please note if you are flying on a non EU passport the queue for passport control was long so don’t leave it to the last min to go to your gate.
parveenFlew with British Airways-Jan 2025
Lisbon Airport has a laid-back atmosphere, but navigating it efficiently requires some planning. If you’re taking an Uber, be aware that there’s only one entrance into the parking area, creating a bottleneck. It’s best to allow an extra 15-20 minutes to avoid any last-minute stress. If you’re flying with any airline other than TAP Air Portugal, be prepared to walk further inside the terminal. Also, don’t miss out on FastTrack – it’s a great perk across Europe, and Lisbon Airport offers it as well for a smoother experience
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Dec 2024
Give yourself ample time for connecting flights. Lhr is a massive airport
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Dec 2024
Heathrow transfer is very long with multiple moving parts. Try to get your boarding pass for both legs, or you will be stuck at Heathrow transfer desk and miss your flight.

Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Oct 2024
Flight was well priced and departure times meant we didn't need to stay overnight at Gatwick or close to the airport in Cagliari. Don't pay extra for seating unless you want specific seats - you can book these for free from 48 hours before departure - and then check-in 24 hours before online.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Sept 2024
The BA team was ready when we arrived at the airport for early morning check-in, which made the transition through customs very easy. Just remember to allow enough time to go through customs and to separate all fluids before hand.
MichalFlew with British Airways-Sept 2024
Rather then waiting for check in at the airport hall (smells of deep frying) go to the hotel just outside! Bar is a bit more expensive, but so worth it!
Verified travelerFlew with TAP AIR PORTUGAL-Oct 2024
I recommend choosing a non-stop flight to Lisbon on one of the major carriers from a U.S. city thereby avoiding altogether a TAP flight to or from London.
QuentinFlew with British Airways-Oct 2024
VLC is an easy airport, rarely long queues for security but try to travel midweek rather than at busy weekend times
Verified travelerFlew with Austrian Airlines-Sept 2024
The boarding was seamless , since I only had a carry on the process was simple through my experience.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Sept 2024
Go to the airport early as the Security queues are almost always long, especially in the Summer months.
MireilleFlew with British Airways-Nov 2024
Be careful with your carry one not to take any liquids or toothpaste or other creams as they are very strict which is understandable so you do not have to run for your connecting flight! Lesson learned!
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Sept 2024
Pass on paying extra for business class unless you have an incredibly long layover then access to the club Lou he may be worth it
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Oct 2024
If you have a connection in London to USA, make sure to have a layover of minimum 3 hours, or you’ll miss your flight.

Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Oct 2024
Don't fly British Airways. If you have a connecting flight make sure they don't set you up with only a 2 hour connection. Also, if you buy a bottle of wine at the Pisa airport (after you have checked in and gone through security) and even though they put it in a security bag that is sealed and says "do not open until final destination" - that doesn't fly with security in Heathrow. They will open the security bag, scan your bottle of wine and then put it back in the same security bag and put it in one of theirs that is identical. The problem with this is, they hold your bag for awhile and then search your entire bag because they think you are hiding something else. I am told by several other passengers that Heathrow is known for this.
Laura LeighFlew with British Airways-Oct 2024
Be prepared for them canceling the flight last minute if the flight isn't full -- they only care about their profits, not customer service or abiding by the implied contract of getting you to where you need to be on time. Don't schedule anything for at least a day after your intended arrival time. And be ready for the terminal to be packed, noisy and uncomfortable. If you have another way of getting to Manchester, take it. Don't book this short haul flight as it's so unreliable.
EmreFlew with Turkish Airlines-Sept 2024
Do not book the flights to Heathrow as they are star allience joint flights there are a lot of issues with the check-in and transfer documents are not checked in Turkey so there is a huge wait time problem during the border control due to this. It takes approximately 15 minutes for someone to go through checks because of this and if you are back at the que after the flight this issue costs you 2 hours wait time at the airport.
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Sept 2024
Pack your liquids and toiletries in plastic bags and be prepared to pull it all out. London Heathrow airport still does this, and makes you rescan through security between connecting flights even though you never leave their airport. If you think 2 hours between flights (time chosen by them not us) is enough, it’s barely enough if they fly into one terminal and depart connecting from another, so don’t plan to eat or drink anything in Heathrow.
Yves-LeoFlew with British Airways-Nov 2024
allow plenty of time for security check. Take all liquids, cream, make- up, foundation etc. out of your carryon luggage. a lot of travelers had their luggage pulled over for open bag check. This slowed down the screaming process considerably and caused me to lose my flight.
AnnaFlew with British Airways-Oct 2024
Dont get to Prague airport too early if you are checking a bag because they dont even tell you where you can go to check you bag until just a little before the flight. We sat and waited for no reason
RobertFlew with British Airways-Oct 2024
Allow plenty of time to get through Arrecife airport! Took an age to check in/bad drop, then security, then the queues for food and duty free!
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Sept 2024
Give yourself a minimum of two days it seems to ensure you have time for at least one cancellation and multiple delays without being informed.
SYBIL BRENNANFlew with British Airways-Sept 2024
Beware airlines can change flights last minute and send you to a different airport from the airport of your connecting flight
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Jun 2024
Try the business class option as not much more expensive. You get three seats for two people, good food, drinks and more leg room plus priority boarding.
Verified travelerFlew with Jet2-Jul 2024
Get entertainment downloaded for you and kids if necessary, get a neck pillow and keep warm on return flights as the temperature drops a lot from Turkey
FrederickFlew with British Airways-Jun 2024

Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Jun 2024
Leave enough time for transfer! Especially when changing from T3 to T5. Heathrow is gigantic
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Aug 2024
Everything was fine regarding the actual flying. The only thing that was annoying is the quite long line and wait time at the check-in. BA policy is good and somewhat better than some other airlines ridiculously strict and limiting baggage rules. Heathrow is a giant airport, so those who are connecting should know that it takes a long time (almost 2 hours) to change terminals. There are lots of passengers, the shuttles are packed to the gill, and the buildings are huge, so long walking is necessary. Although the security is going pretty fast, there is no time to look around, so as long as people are aware of it, it is fine. I think one of the best and most passenger-friendly airport in Europe is Schiphol in Amsterdam.
PaulFlew with Ryanair-Jun 2024
Wizzair & Ryanair are the only two carriers that currently fly direct between London and Vilnius. We flew Wizzair from Luton to Vilnius and Ryanair from Vilnius to Stansted. We live in West London so of the two airports, Luton is easier to get to, but there was no Wizzair flight scheduled for the day of our departure, hence the choice of Ryanair for the return. Luton airport was chaotic. We heard horror stories of roadworks causing two-hour delays in getting from long-stay parking to security, and they're introducing new scanners too so the queues at security were around 40 minutes long in any case. Vilnius by contrast was a model of calm!
Verified travelerFlew with British Airways-Jul 2024
The signs on posts in the Prague airport aren't tall enough, so if there are people in queue who happen to be in front of the signs, they're easy to miss. These signs are important to know which line one must use for ticketing: ticketing, bag drop, or level of passenger.
DavidFlew with Ryanair-Jul 2024
Be prepared to do a lot of standing at Lamezia Airport. Check in can often take a while and there are not enough seats at the gate.

Heathrow airport is very inefficient and complicated to get around. You need at least an hour and 20 minutes between your flights to make any connection in time. I don’t think I’ll ever do any connections there in the future. Flying into it is fine if that is your final destination.
CindyFlew with British Airways-Jun 2024

DavidFlew with British Airways-Mar 2024
6:10 am departure. Got to the airport at 4am along with half of Edinburgh. Truly insane. Like, what does the airport do after 7am? Security looked horrific, but somehow it was efficient (without sacrificing attention to detail); we got through in 15 minutes Staffing was appropriate for volume and facility was adequate size for load. So…get there early. Like, really early. Avoid checking in at airport; precheck bags (or have none), have boarding pass prior to arrival.
Verified travelerFlew with TAP AIR PORTUGAL-May 2024

Flying the whole route with BA makes Heathrow T5 very easy. Only one security check was required in Edinburgh. None at Heathrow. This is one benefit of flying BA. We were also able to use the BA lounges which made for more relaxing wait before our flights.

3 hours delay, little communication, no refreshments provided despite legal requirements

On time! The wait to board standing outside was miserable. The “priority” boarding is misleading as it does not help the boarding process at all. The bag charges were very high and my expected carry on did not quite fit in the measurement box. The lobby experience at the airport was terrible! Signage and directions were inadequate. The staff was all lovely.

Late boarding as our plane was late arriving from previous flight, then 3 hours sat on the tarmac waiting for a time slot. Then, when we arrive at Birmingham airport, we had to lug our bags down the plane steps, cross the tarmac and lug our bags up the stairs to enter the airport. Horrendous!

Sadly the experience with the airline is worse one ever. Starting from the state of the inside that was filthy that flies was flying around our legs. The food is expensive than a restaurant, imagine a family of 4 spending almost £50 for just sandwich of bread and ham no tomatoes and lettuce in it and a small container of crips that is not up to 20 pieces and a can of coke or Pepsi, and unfortunately that is a person ffour hours pay of work before tax. I know the blame will go to high cost of living but even at that the price is too much.

flight delay was announced after passengers were staged to board the flight. Communication regarding subsequent gate changes was poor.

Over 2 hours delay, communicated last minute - and no acknowledgement by flight crew

Boarding was terrible. We were all cooped up in a small, claustrophobic space awaiting to be let out to walk to the plane. Very cramped and very uncomfortable.

Although our departure (DUB) was slightly delayed we reached our destination (LBA) ahead of schedule. The price was very competitive too (around €100 return). Plus, the departure times for both legs were very good: 13:05 and 15:10, respectively. I gave a neutral rating for Food and Entertainment because I didn't avail of either.

Dislike standing for 30 minutes waiting to board. Coffee disgusting, hot sandwich almost inedible. Staff cheerful. Flight early.

Notified as to why there’s a delay with our flight.

Flight was cancelled. Then left virtually completely in the lurch

The workers checking passengers from the boarding gate stole money from people whose luggage was perfectly fitting inside the carry-on sizer.

Whole way through - far more professional and slick than I expected

Good news was that Bag Check was open two and a half hours before the flight, which is essential with the chaotic immigration process. Flight was okay, but sitting at the back of the aircraft, 3 overhead bins on both sides were filled with crew bags and other misc items, so we couldn't put our cabin bags anywhere near us. To add insult, twice the crew managed to drop items that they were taking out of the overhead bins onto my wife's head, who was sitting in an aisle seat.

You need to make signage at Berlin Airport clearer. Having checked in online we had our boarding passes onlour phones. You do not make it clear that you need to check in again to receive a printed luggage tag. You get to baggage drop off and it says you can only do it with a luggage tag BUT not how to get this.

It was good except they could offer free water and tea/coffe

Sat at rear of aircraft and was very cold. As a frequent flyer for many years, this is was the coldest I have ever been. Other passengers and some crew were complaining how cold it was. Sitting near the doors always risks being colder, just the way the aircraft works - but this was exceptional, bring a good jumper. Everything else was pretty standard easyJet - good value low cost carrier.

The plane was postponed for over 2.5 hours, which meant that all four of us missed the check in time for our ongoing trip to Melbourne. We had to buy new tickets for 4 people as we had to forfeit the ones we had. The cost was really unfair. i understand that it was snowing during the first leg of the plane for that morning. Surely the cost could have been shared by the airline and not all by us. I could have bought insurance - but you can see how much I travel. I will need to chose more trustworthy airlines.

The true is that travel from London to Faro on 11/12/2025 by BA was cancelled, so I did not go to Faro, so i did not board easy flight. The mediocre qualification to you was because even when i bought an insurance, i could not change date neither obtain reimbursement. It could be ideal if you do something in order for me not to lose the purchase Thank you

Queuing for quite a while despite using the "speedy boarding".

Over sold! Never again. Got bumped even though I checked in and arrived on time with all my documents in order. Wasn’t even offer food/drink voucher for the next flight that was 6 hours later.

The flight was canceled. It was very troubling because the rescheduled to Air France was two days later. I incurred two days extra of hotel, was not able to get a boarding pass until I reach the boarding desk at the airline. I don’t know what happened British Airways, but I was very disappointed.

There was a delay on departure. Seat configuration is horrible. BA should not fly this confirmation any longer until the new seat conjugation is installed. Your competition is beating you. Food was poor to average. Not many choices. Arrival was delayed at the gate due to another plane being at the gate. You would think after the delay at the departure, BA and ground control would figure out how to ensure you passengers wouldn’t be late and running to their next connection. Overall, BA continues to be very low on satisfaction. If I had an other choice, I would choose another airline.

Due to no fault of the crew or airline the flight left late but more than made up for it once we lifted off. Captain announced the delay was due to the plane was being worked on. Very friendly, helpful crew, who seemed to enjoy their job. Seats were very comfortable and appreciated headphones and the blanket/pillow in Business class. We were seated in the last row of Business class and they ran out of choices for the meal, however the Flight attendant was able to obtain a chicken dinner from another section.

We missed our connection because they loaded the plane wrong. And had to fix the weight and balance

Check in desks at Bodrum we’re not labelled properly to the point we ended up queuing at the desk only for the signs for business and economy to be put up later and we had to move lines to go into the economy queue. By the time we got to the front, we ended up be ushered to the business queue anyway to get checked in. The flight left on time but then we had to circle the air for a good 15 mins and then when we landed we had to wait to be taxied for another hour. Our baggage didn’t arrive but nobodies did but were told after an hour of waiting that no more bags would be delivered to all passengers had to fill out a form to get their bags delivered. Could have told us that a while ago. Very poor communications

Boarding was seamless, crew were great. Less disruptions on the night flight would have improved the experience and turning off lights earlier.

Worst customer service I've ever experienced on a flight. They downgraded my seat without giving me any other options, then sat in a seat with an arched back for 10 hours. I was not able to get ahold of any customer service representatives to understand what alternatives I might have, or how they will be handling a refund for the difference in fares between business and premium economy that I was downgraded to.

British airways needs to improve their luggage handling process and communications. The luggage was lost/left in UK. But, this was not communicated to me as a traveler and because of the wait at the carousel in Seattle (we have to go through customs and immigration on arrival to US) I missed the connecting flight and had to be rebooked. No one informed me that the luggage wasn't there, and there was no one there at the carousel to check with or help me get through security faster. I wasn't the only one- there were a lot of people waiting for luggage that didn't arrive.

My bags were lost. I waited in a line for 5 hours after I landed and got no resolution to the issue.

Everything was delayed first trip to Morocco was 3 and a half spurs late they made me walk around when I have limited mobility got to morocco and everything was closed and then coming back same thing made me miss my train to take me home and they wouldn't refund me as it was their aircraft that made me late then had to pay a £77 taxi to take me home and that is not fair my multiple sclerosis is not good for me to stress now they caused me a flair up and can't leave my bed.

The flight was delayed by a bird strike. We were held in boarding area with no toilet facilities.

Very late to leave, poor communication on expected departure time and when boarding actually started.

Everything was perfectly fine, it’s exactly what you would hope for from a budget airline. You get what it says on the tin, what more could you ask for?

Boarding was started early and we were lined up in. A glass tunnel on the tarmac we were left standing there for an hour with no information the flight left and arrived 30 mins late

Need more check in desks at Marrakech. Even if you are travelling with hand luggage only, you still need to 'check in' to get the old style boarding pass. Unfortunately they haven't thought to separate out the people checking in luggage to a separate desk. Flight was delayed leaving but arrived on time. Limited food options on board and very overpriced.

Flight was delayed so long we missed our second flight. Entire trip had to be cancelled. Ryanair refused to help us.

Stanton airport is outdated, pure equiped, airport. Fire alarms, power outages is a common routine, wich result ir flights delay , additional money spending and huge gathering of people in airport wich is unsafe.

I missed the flight from Manchester to Dublin because of poor informations from Aer Lingus and the airport, no possibility to check in online, they don't respond to phone calls, I had to buy another tickets to enable me travel to Dublin from Manchester. I want my money to refund.

Rude check in staff. Split family up with young children.

Shocking. Faults with the plane in both directions which caused delays with no compensation

Very efficient boarding. Plane lready for take ooff10 minutes before time.

Great crew. Seats do not recline :( but it is budget so i should have known. Otherwise comfy leather chair. Slight slim chair but again budget so expected. No entertainment do makes journey boring. Recommend packing plenty of snacks and games or download plenty of films and music in your device. Staff excellent. Clean flight. On time.

Both of my flights had issues with their time slot with air traffic control, so they left over an hour late and the flight back to London was delayed by over an hour. Please provide more clarity about baggage requirements on booking sites, your website and within the app. I had to pay for extra bags at the airport when departing London, because they didn’t specify that your carry on bag can only be a backpack and not a trolley, my trolley bag fit the size requirements of the backpack but still I was made to pay

The crew at Check-in was very helpful. It’s was appreciate.

It’s a budget airline. You get what you pay for. They insisted on getting us out of the gate and into our slot on time. They got us to the destination safely. Aircraft was clean and well maintained. What more could we want

Half an hour delay. Squeezed into a small Departure Lounge with very few seats. Noisy flight with screaming unruly kids. Loud IPads and Phones. Heaven!

The flight was delayed 5 hours and I'm and invalid,I wan a refund for this

The cabin crew on that flight were super fantastic and super helpful. They were so polite and considerate that i felt i travelled with a 5star airline.

Delayed delayed delayed - always with Wizzair. Staff were friendly and well mannered but clearly the company is unorganized and the aircrafts are outdated.
