FAQs - booking California flights

  • I’m booking a flight to California to visit San Francisco. Which airport do I choose?

San Francisco International is the closest to the city centre (15min) and has the most options when it comes to airlines and routes. United, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic operate direct flights from London Heathrow, Norwegian flies from London Gatwick, and Thomas Cook Airlines operates seasonal flights to SFO from Manchester. However, this is one of the busiest airports in California; if you’d prefer a less busy airport, you can fly to San Jose International, which is 47min from downtown San Francisco. However, do keep in mind that British Airways is the only airline to operate regular flights to this airport from London Heathrow.

  • I’m planning a trip to Yosemite National Park. What’s the best airport to fly into?

The closest airport to Yosemite is Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT), about 96 mi away from the park and accessible by road. If you want to fly from the United Kingdom all the way to Yosemite, you'll have to have a stopover either in San Francisco or Los Angeles. United flies from Heathrow and Gatwick to San Francisco and Los Angeles, while American Airlines flies to Los Angeles from Heathrow. Alternatively, or if you’d prefer to fly as little as possible, you can fly into San Francisco and then drive to Yosemite (approx. 3h 50min).

If you’re flying to San Jose or San Diego, you’ll have to fly out of London Heathrow on British Airways. The simplest option is to book your flight to California with this airline from Belfast International.

Everything went smooth. All flights were on time No changing gates, . No changing flights . It was like a completely different airlines tha n the last time I used Cathay Pacific . The last flight, 2 months ago, I had before this one was from Philippines also . I got changed in Manila and was told it only added 2 hours onto my flight . My 20 hour return trip ended up being 30 hours return with a 10.0 hour layover in New York with no seats anywhere . Everyone was sleeping or sitting on the floor . Unlike the hotel I was given in Manila to wait for this flight home . I never thought I would use Cathay Pacific again . But I did and this time you were great! I should have complained about the flight and layover from Hell a couple months ago. Consider that I am complaining about that august/23 flight now . Thank you got the great flying experience on my way home from philippines .

Cons: "Chose emergency exit on Cathay 777-300. Terrible.. was squished like a sardine! And I was in window seat... was not even able to eat! Worst economy class I have been in years!!! Never again...."
Pros: "crews were nice"
Cons: "Very crowded flight. Fully book. Super busy bathroom. Food was bad"
Pros: "Beautiful, new plane. Amazing, elegant, classy, patient crew. Lot so of nice customer service touches."
Cons: "The food could have been a bit more exciting, but it was solid."
Pros: "Good flat business class seat allows for actual sleep!"
Cons: "Seat padding good for a seat, but too firm as a bed"
Pros: "seats are comfortable"
Cons: "flight as always delayed, food and inflight entertainment system choice are very poor - crew always on the PA for non sens announcement in 3 languages"
Cons: "terrible food - poor choice of inflight entertainment - crew constantly on the pa"
Pros: "Good quality plane with good entertainment options. Staff were good but seemed stretched, perhaps not enough staff?"
Cons: "Plan was 2 hours late departing, my daughter also took this flight 6 weeks beforehand and had similar delays."
Pros: "The airline stewardess are nice Smile"
Cons: "The Cx892 restroom floor was wet, the paper towels kept falling down, the sink was got stuck"
Pros: "thank u very much im very happy with the flight :)"

Once the boarding sign went on and all passengers gathered in line, we were left waiting standing up for almost an hour because there was a delay.

It would be nice to have vegan options for meals. The entertainment was not working on the the way to Austria. It was only available near the end of flight to Canada. The service was excellent.

Flight was delayed by approx 1 hour. The boarding process and the flight itself were very good, slightly tight squeeze for my legs but overall happy.

Flight was meant to leave at 8:30pm but there was a 2 hour delay 😞

Airmalta does not include meals in their flights and neither offers entertainment.

Pros: "From checkin to luggage collection - the flight was easy and without hassle. We left slightly later than scheduled but arrived slightly earlier than scheduled. Staff from check in to those onboard we polite and professional. The aircraft was clean, bright and appeared in good order."
Cons: "Luggage collection took a little while longer than I would have expected - only a minor point, nothing to change airlines for."
Cons: "Both times into Rome we had to wait on the tarmac for stairs. Either get more stairs or book fewer flights. The planes get hot in July while you wait endlessly on stairs."
Pros: "fabulous flight and crew"
Cons: "Perfect take off perfect landing so smooth nothing more can be better - Thank you!"
Pros: "Pleasant crew. Clean plane."
Cons: "Leaving on time (we were an hour late because of a discrepancy between number of passengers checked and number on board.) Would be nice to have at least a complimentary bottle of water."
Pros: "Boarding process was smooth and the flight was on time."
Cons: "LONG lines to check bags at the Malta airport. Limited leg room on the plane. Checking bags is expensive."
Cons: "This has been the most convenient way I’ve ever traveled."
Pros: "Prompt service, clean plane, friendly stewards."
Cons: "There was no complimentary water/beverages for a 2.5 hour flight - would have been nice but oh well."
Pros: "Nothing"
Cons: "Really old plane with uncomfortable seats and really bad in flight options. The air conditioning was also broken so the entire flight felt hot and muggy, this is on a 12 hour flight!!"
Cons: "Flight from heathrow to Manchester stopped it being excellent alll round as flight delayed over an hour"
Pros: "Felt like a disorganized mess! I don’t understand how this is still in business. Water was for sale on the flight, not for free. Water!! It’s a basic amenity. Exit row was exactly the same leg space as the rest of the aircraft. So why did I pay extra?"
Cons: "Delays! Delays! Delays!!"
Pros: "Despite all the “delays” it actually arrived on time."
Cons: "First it was on time (this morning t-12 hrs) Then it was delayed (delayed incoming flight) Then the plane changed and was on time Then something weird happend, departure was on time, arrival was delayed by 2 hours. Of course, officially there was no delay as departure was still on schedule - but “departure” just means everyone is boarded and plane door is shut, you could still be sitting on an empty stand on the tarmac for two+ hours. Complaints ensued. Captain rerouted plane. Back on time. Arriving at LGW is ridiculous - only 3!!!! THREE! Border nazis manning passport desk for entire south terminal, there must have been at least 700 people queueing. So that delay of 1 hour plus still occurred just within the airport. #ThisIsBrexitBritain #BrokenBritain #PeopleJustDoNothing #NothingWorks #AlexCruzIsACunt"
Pros: "Comfort items on the over sea flight"
Cons: "Long layover kept getting longer and longer due to flight delays at Heathrow. No explanations in writing - a ticketing agent told us of the dela. The status board was simply blank. BA website said nothing at all"
Cons: "If you want to reserve your airline seat (I'm talking a standard economy seat) you have to pay $34 per seat if it's 24 hours or more before your flight. Guess what happens at 24 hours? The airport takes over and you're stuck in the middle of a crowded 10.5 hour flight all because you weren't able to select your seat ahead of time. Just another money grab from a tanking airline."
Cons: "Our baggage was lost and after 2 day’s of being told that the delivering agent had our baggage and it would be delivered any minute, on the third day we were told our bags had been st the Madrid airport the whole time! Between British Airways and Iberia, terrible handoff, communication and customer service."
Pros: "Because someone was sitting in my seat, I was moved to one near the exit which has more legroom, without having to pay £28. The flight was on time and we were kept well informed of some chaos that was happening around push back."
Cons: "The atrocious check-in process - why only 24 hours or less? Why are you always allocated a seat between other people. Why is it almost impossible to change that? - oh yes, because BA want you to pay a premium to avoid the hassle."

Delayed and ketone runway. Was told some nonsense about thunderstorms slowing down flights. Why not just come out and tell customers NATO and BRITISH FORCES were doing defence exercises and were in control of AIR SPACE.

Pros: "Standard seat. Crew engaging and entertaining without compromising safety or comfort"
Cons: "Everything optimal"
Pros: "The check-in, pre-boarding, flight, and arrival were fine. We left a little late, but arrived on time."
Cons: "As expected, the seats did not decline and the spacing between rows was tight. It would be nice to have more room and reclining seats, but that is not the style for this airline."
Pros: "Nothing much every other plane is more comfortable."
Cons: "We were five people with five carry-on lugages and five small individual bags. The people in boarding tried to charge us €76 for each one of the bags for a total of €380 extra. We managed to put three of those bags inside our suitcases but we were still charged for two very small bags €152."
Pros: "Good price and fairly smooth process"
Cons: "Carry-on luggage and a personal item should be allowed. Seats should recline. And at least 1 free non alcoholic beverage."
Cons: "One hour late. More legroom than expected. Creative fast boarding"
Cons: "They overbooked our flight, sold our tickets and we didn’t get on standby. We had to wait in the airport for 8 hours for another flight because of this."
Pros: "Nothing, staff didnt even attempt to help me once i eventually for the gate for easyjet and the gate had closed (due to staff telling me to go to departures after showing that i didnt have a boarding pass)"
Cons: "The lack of help recieved by staff throughout the airport to help me get to the correct gate. After 30 mins of asking different staff where to go and what i needed to do to get on the flight the gate for my flight was then closed which has caused me to pay for an extra flight. Due to this i will be requesting a full refund on the first flight."
Pros: "Preferential boarding was useful as the flight was full and cabin baggage space was tight."
Cons: "People shouldn't be allowed to carry two bags of the same size and dimensions onto the plane, space is too tight for that, they should be made to put all their bags into the hold."
Pros: "Once we were on board the airplane, the flight was comfortable and just fine. The crew were competent and pleasant and the amenities acceptable."
Cons: "The intake of passengers and check in was horrible and embarrassingly slow. It was a poor logistical plan and handled poorly by your onsite staff. And your rules compound the problem. The same for the arrival! The cheap fare was evidently offset by what seemed like a mile walk to customs after we got off the bus. Again it is poor logistics and planning."
Pros: "Quick boarding and arrived early."
Cons: "The seat was very very small for an average size human and the seat belt was on max.. No social distancing between seats"
Pros: "As it was impossible to confirm that I was on that flight, and I had to book another flight with Tui less that a day before I was due to fly, therefore to like. It was equally impossible to contact Last.minute.comm."
Cons: "It would be have been great to make contact with an actual human being"
Cons: "The flight was okay but 40 minutes late due to issues at Hamburg Airport. I.e. the problem was not with the actual flight or with Ryanair."
Pros: "On boarding the plane was dirty. My daughters seat had food droppings on it which needed to brushed off before she could sit. We then had the worst landing we have ever experienced. Scary."
Cons: "A clean plane for passengers. An explanation to why the landing was so inept."
Cons: "All the agents were not professional, stupid and did not explained to the pasengers which line to check in. Took me 1and 1/2 hour to check in and went to 2-3 differents lanes and keep waiting each lane for long time."
Cons: "Not to fly with Ryan air which I won’t be!"
Cons: "Rude and incompetent staff. You get what you pay for."
Pros: "Quick and cheap,"
Cons: "Children were crying all the time... were knocking my seat. Crew was not helpfull. Dirty plane and no place for luggage."
Cons: "Why do I need to pay for one more time?"
Cons: "This airport is wayyyyyy too far from Paris, Kaylan was misleading in suggesting this airport. The cab from central Paris was $170"
